The interesting thing is how she sings it. I'm listening to the song right now and if I didn't look at the lyrics, I wouldn't have known this line was so heavy. The musicality of the song really makes it feel like a _post_-examination of the relationship. She's reaching the tail end of depression and entering acceptance. However, this is just this line, and I'll have to check out the rest of the song. I think you're (still) spot-on.

Why did I only just realise that the use of "pennies" was deliberate. Firstly, to correspond with "the 1" since pennies are worth 1 cent. And secondly, because pennies are worth 1 cent, they may seem to be worthless. But in the grand picture, tossing pennies and then having the wishes come true (aka getting the 1 person of your dreams) means an inexplicable, infinite value. I'm in awe.

I recently broke up with my 4-yr-long relationship and this song tears me up everytime. I´m just amazed by how identified I feel with the lyrics. I know everyone hates TTPD but I've been a fan of TS since around 2018 & I didn't get the hype surrounding Evermore & Midnights. At first I didn't even like Folkore but ended up considering it among her 4 best albums. But TTPD I loved instantly. So sad about the recent break up, they seemed like a match made in heaven. Hopefully this is a temporary split.
According to me, this song is about a woman who is looking back on a relationship that ended. The woman seems to moved on from the pain of the loss, but still wonders how they could have come close to a lifetime together and parted ways. As she's speaking to her ex-lover, she wants to know if there's anything she could have done differently to keep them together.
The first verse she tells her ex-lover that she's doing well and learning to live her life to the fullest (Been saying "yes" instead of "no") She thinks of him at times, and thought she saw him at the bus stop. "I hit the ground running each night" might mean that while she's enjoying her life, she does notice that she's not doing those things with him. She reflects on their relationship, and decides that just because it didn't work out, doesn't mean their love wasn't worth it.
The pre-chorus she was surprised that they ended but now she has come to terms with it and used the painful experience to grow even more as a person (And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow)
The chorus she remembers their time together and muses that they "were something" special (But we were something, don't you think so?). If the wishes she had made when they were together had come true, he would have been the one she spent her life with (And if my wishes came true It would have been you). It's unclear if she still wants that. She admits that it's her fault too(In my defense, I have none For never leaving well enough alone). Whether she still wants to be with him or not, she thinks it would have been fun if he had been the one she settled down with, so their story together could go on for the rest of their lives.
The second verse she hopes that he's enjoying his life and moving on too (I have this dream you're doing cool shit)
She thinks that their relationship was worth it even though it ended, by deciding their love was one of the greatest of "all time"(You know the greatest love of all time are over now)
In the bridge she finds it difficult to leave her questions unanswered. Still, she resists, the urge to ask if he thinks that they might still be together if things had happened only a little bit differently.
In the 2nd chorus she admits that she has "no defense" for "digging up the grave" of their love to talk with him, but she keeps thinking about how close they seemingly came to staying together permanently.

I think this line means that they never cared about the rules, but they made the most of their time. Also using the word "count" that relates to the theme of the numbers, but also refers to "making the most of"

i really like the line “thought i saw you at the bus stop, i didn’t though” because its such an underlined way to tell that the person who she’s talking about in the song is so much in her mind that she kinda “searchs for” this person in random places, even if its unconsciously. its the same with the cardigan verse “chasing shadows in the grocery line”, but in the 1 i feel like its more disguised because of the different context of the song. anyway, i just love the subtlety

I’ve grown up, and when my sisters and I were driving they proclaimed they were going to play the new album and I groaned. When they played it I was like damn... I have to check this out. I got home and listened to it, and now I’m in love with all of her music, and then I watched her documentary and now I just love her in general 😂

Well don’t forget to credit her producers, who were the main reasons why her music could adapt to genres. There was her first couple albums with a country producer whose name escapes me, then her first works with Max Martin, Shellback and Jeff Bhasker in Red and 1989, and then Jack Antonoff taking centre stage in 1989, reputation and Lover, and now Aaron Dessner on folklore.
