According to me, this song is about a woman who is looking back on a relationship that ended. The woman seems to moved on from the pain of the loss, but still wonders how they could have come close to a lifetime together and parted ways. As she's speaking to her ex-lover, she wants to know if there's anything she could have done differently to keep them together. The first verse she tells her ex-lover that she's doing well and learning to live her life to the fullest (Been saying "yes" instead of "no") She thinks of him at times, and thought she saw him at the bus stop. "I hit the ground running each night" might mean that while she's enjoying her life, she does notice that she's not doing those things with him. She reflects on their relationship, and decides that just because it didn't work out, doesn't mean their love wasn't worth it. The pre-chorus she was surprised that they ended but now she has come to terms with it and used the painful experience to grow even more as a person (And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow) The chorus she remembers their time together and muses that they "were something" special (But we were something, don't you think so?). If the wishes she had made when they were together had come true, he would have been the one she spent her life with (And if my wishes came true It would have been you). It's unclear if she still wants that. She admits that it's her fault too(In my defense, I have none For never leaving well enough alone). Whether she still wants to be with him or not, she thinks it would have been fun if he had been the one she settled down with, so their story together could go on for the rest of their lives. The second verse she hopes that he's enjoying his life and moving on too (I have this dream you're doing cool shit) She thinks that their relationship was worth it even though it ended, by deciding their love was one of the greatest of "all time"(You know the greatest love of all time are over now) In the bridge she finds it difficult to leave her questions unanswered. Still, she resists, the urge to ask if he thinks that they might still be together if things had happened only a little bit differently. In the 2nd chorus she admits that she has "no defense" for "digging up the grave" of their love to talk with him, but she keeps thinking about how close they seemingly came to staying together permanently. Sorry it's a bit long but I found this interesting and wanted to share my thoughts feel free to tell me what you think the song is about and if you want to add something. I recently broke up with my 4-yr-long relationship and this song tears me up everytime. I´m just amazed by how identified I feel with the lyrics. We had so much in common, we had a lot of plans together, we wanted to get married and suddenly that just disappeared. I´m glad she made me listen so many times to Taylor bc her songs have helped me through this process. Taylor swift is incredibly talented.
"In my defense, I have none, for digging up the grave another time" is a really beautiful way of saying she couldn't help but think about the what-ifs, and it even sounds apologetic somehow. It's a very poetic manifestation of her maturity as a songwriter.
The interesting thing is how she sings it. I'm listening to the song right now and if I didn't look at the lyrics, I wouldn't have known this line was so heavy. The musicality of the song really makes it feel like a _post_-examination of the relationship. She's reaching the tail end of depression and entering acceptance. However, this is just this line, and I'll have to check out the rest of the song. I think you're (still) spot-on.
J Escareno Idk, it just made me laugh...? Is there a problem with it? Cause i definitely agree with this comment and love Taylor and this new album so far.
*_“and if you never bleed you’ll never grow”_** is such a wise line right there! if we keep staying in our shell for too long, we’ll never have a taste of what life is all about... the inexperience and learning process will be in vain if nothing has awakened us in this short life we all are living in*
Taylor not only gave us a single but a whole album, the fact that this album wasn't planned shows Taylor as the talented queen she is (Edit: also she served bops, like how can one be so perfect? I'm in love)
ariana latte it’s the fact that she never planned to release any album this year because she has this thing where she only release one album per two years but suddenly this pandemic happened and she used her time to make music or ART because that’s what this album is.. a real masterpiece😭❤️
i love that she named this "the 1" when it's the perfect song for your ex. like a very sweet ode to exes. what a great love letter to a past love. it's not angry, mad or plain bitter. well, you can only write this when you've already met "the 1"
Emily Noon I think ts the one: Joe Alwyn. But since she wrote the “1” instead of word “one” I think this song is inspired by Calvin Harris. They had 1 year relationship. Her track “1” in Lover is for Calvin. She and they had a lot of parties during her relationship with him... 😢 plus... I think it’s a closure song.
@@anisanurraudah8383 I think painting by the numbers refers to those children's coloring books in wich the different numbers in different parts of the drawings simbolize certain colors, to guide kids when they color. I think this line means that they never cared about the rules, but they made the most of their time. Also using the word "count" that relates to the theme of the numbers, but also refers to "making the most of"
When TAYLOR said, "You know the greatest films of all time were never made" "And if you never bleed you never gonna grow" These both lines hit me so hard!

At first I didn't even like Folkore but ended up considering it among her 4 best albums. But TTPD I loved instantly. I've listened to it at least twice a day since it's release day & I don't see that changing anytime soon. It has so many of her top tier songs. *Black Dog *But Daddy I Love Him *My Boy Only Breaks His Fav *Down Bad *Guilty As Sin *Who's Afraid *Fresh Out The Slammer *I Can Do It *Smallest Man Who Ever *The Alchemy *Fortnight Some of my favs are on Evermore like Ivy & RWYLM, but otherwise it felt like the less inspired version of Folklore or the Folklore B sides to me. Everyone’s saying life is too short to pretend you don’t like Taylor but you shouldn’t be ashamed to like her in the first place. I’m tired of people putting down popular pop artists, and thinking their music taste is superior bc they listen to indie artists and classic rock. People can like whatever they want and Taylor is such a goddess. Just bc you say you don’t like Taylor and popular pop artists does not make you better, I am EMBARSSSED for you if you think that way.
I don't think they do it bad intentioned like when you say stop pretending, not because you are ashamed but because it's not possible to not like her, a playful comment imo

YES! I feel like this album sums up how I’ve felt during quarantine, the thoughts I’ve had, dreams, memories I’ve been replaying ... it’s insane how this album hits me.
Well, you know, I'm 52 and a Beatlemaniac. I never cared much for modern pop music, with very few exceptions. I read some excellent reviews of this album and thought I'd give it a go (always nice to expand one's horizons). I have to say that I love it. This is serious stuff, and not a flashy pop song in sight. I notice that Swift made Rolling Stone's top 100 songwriters of all time, at the age of (get this) 25 -- an enormous accolade. Well done, Miss Swift. I can't stop listening.
I knew it. I'm a 19-year-old with a growingly huge obsession for The Beatles and all my friends who love The Beatles also really like TS, they resemble somehow.
As great as this album is, the same level of songwriting craft is all over her other albums/songs, even the "flashy pop" songs. Of course, it's weird to think of "flashy pop" as a negative coming from a Beatles fan, considering they kinda invented the genre!
@@jonathanhenderson9422 I didn't mean it negatively. I'm sure you'd agree that Taylor is known for her pop songs (for want of a better term), big concerts, dance routines, etc. I was just saying that there's nothing like that on Folklore. And yes, A Beatles fan should know all about pop songs, although the lads had serious and almost universally-recognised credibility as songwriters.
Another romantic song about Matty Healy - the love of her life and the loss of her life. - "the roaring twenties" - they met when they were 25. Another lyric "rose flowing with your chosen family" - Matty's band is his chosen family and he loves to drink red wine.
@@ultravioletpisces3666 Yes I think Maroon is about Matty too. I think just like Cardigan and Peter as songs are connected and are about Matty the song Maroon and Chloe Sam or Marcus are connected by the lyric in Chloe Sam or Sophia or Marcus: And you have some kids with an internet starlet Will that make your memory fade from this scarlet maroon. Mind blown!

Yep. Or when you may or not have caused the demise of a relationship. That “We were something, don’t you think so.... but it would have been fun if you would have been the 1” hits different when you messed up.
this song is dedicated to the one. the one ive been best friends with since we were 13. the one i had feelings for ever since that time and we're gonna be 21 this year. the one who understands me and gets me like no other. the one and only one who i can listen to him talking about every little silly thing hes obssessing over. the one who survived so much with me. the one who, for some reason, doesnt feel the same as me. which sounds crazy to me cause, how can all these powerful feelings only be one-sided? the question i keep asking myself for so much time now without ever getting an answer that pleases me. with this beautifully written song, i think its time for me to find closure. and accept the truth ive been runnin away from. that sadly, youre not the one. and never will be. though it couldve been fun if u were :)
i really like the line “thought i saw you at the bus stop, i didn’t though” because its such an underlined way to tell that the person who she’s talking about in the song is so much in her mind that she kinda “searchs for” this person in random places, even if its unconsciously. its the same with the cardigan verse “chasing shadows in the grocery line”, but in the 1 i feel like its more disguised because of the different context of the song. anyway, i just love the subtlety
Yes. It’s why I eventually had to move to another city... I just couldn’t ever move on knowing he could be out there somewhere. But of course he wasn’t. It was just wishful thinking.
this album just hits different, lyrically speaking. if you’re like me, someone who does not listen to alternative songs so much, you might not like folklore at the first glance. i know i didn’t. but keep listening, and study the lyrics. this woman of the decade is a genius. she poured out her heart, her experiences, her aches, her struggles, her imaginations, her hope, her anxiety, and most importantly her love into the lyrics in this album. once i understand the meaning of the songs, i fell in love with folklore and now it’s been over a month but i just can’t stop replaying all of the songs. #1 the 1 opens up with a cheery, somewhat upbeat/hearty tone. it’s just the perfect intro to open the album. “if one thing had been different, would everything be different today?” i often find myself questioning the same thing for the turns of events that happened in my life.
Omg yes I'm also like you who doesn't listen alternative songs much and tbh I also didn't like folklore at 1st glance but I'm loving it more and more now. 😊
Yoon_gi Min min I know right! The moment my nonchalance toward this album turned into love, it felt oddly bizarre, almost magical. Now I’m just stuck on replay...
@@patricetan me too. I finally found someone who felt the same way about this album 😢. I thought I was the only one. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 😇
“If one thing had been different, would everything be different today?” Of all of the amazing lyrical content of this song, multiple lines give me chills, this one has to hit me the hardest. It reminds me a lot of my ex-girlfriend. We became a couple just weeks before the world shut down. March 1 is a day that will always be special to me, it was the day that marked the start of my first relationship, that day just passed again recently. We were only together 5 months, because the distance truly tore us apart. We met up multiple times anyway, against what was probably smart given COVID protocols, but just to see each other. It was a great time every time. But when those times were over, I got so fed up with her because I felt like she wasn’t putting in the effort for our relationship, which is why “if you wanted me you really should’ve showed” also cuts deep with me. I talked to her multiple times about it and just nothing changed. Swallowing my feelings, I ended it. My patience ran out. But what if this never happened? Even during lockdown, we were planning our first date. We talked about some fun things we could do over the summer. What if we did all of those things? If we had that chance? Would we still be together? Was lockdown expediting the inevitable or would things have changed? Just so many questions that that lyric encapsulates so well for me. I loved her, I wanted it badly. And I mean, I’m 17 years old, I’m sure I’ll be deeper in love with multiple people in my life. But I just question what I did a lot. And what might be different today if this one thing had been different. Edit: Wow, returning to this comment and song months later is an experience. I met someone else about a month after I wrote this comment and she’s just perfect, at least so far. Now that lyric just takes on a completely new connotation. Instead of just would me and my ex still be together, now it’s would I have ever met this person that I feel already so hopeful about. Life has a strange way of giving you lemons. Just hang in there.
i cant get over how close this resonates with my own life, like the way each detail is so close and relatable. and the way you described your apprehensions and what ifs, I think about that everyday even though im on friendly relations with my ex.
Never followed or listened to Taylor, but wanted to watch Eras to see what it’s all about. Wow, what an amazing, talented musician and performer. I’m a fan
Taylor swift reminiscing back to 'Begin again.' 'New year's day.' And the emotional songs that would make you wake up and stay in bed all day recovering from a breakup that never happened.
Well don’t forget to credit her producers, who were the main reasons why her music could adapt to genres. There was her first couple albums with a country producer whose name escapes me, then her first works with Max Martin, Shellback and Jeff Bhasker in Red and 1989, and then Jack Antonoff taking centre stage in 1989, reputation and Lover, and now Aaron Dessner on folklore.
I could never disagree. I still dont get why people wanting the country back and people saying 'TaYlOR cHangE I wAnt heR BAcK' shit. I mean I do get country such a vibe and so beautiful but hey! Taylor never made an ugly song whichever genre it is. She always make the best.

Right?! Just yesterday I was thinking how TS has helped me heal and process one of the most painful time of my life. Taylor Swift is so talented!
Why won't you comeback to that relationship?
"In my defense, I have none, for digging up the grave another time" is a really beautiful way of saying she couldn't help but think about the what-ifs, and it even sounds apologetic somehow. It's a very poetic manifestation of her maturity as a songwriter.
definitely
Yeah. But she's NOT in the grave. Even Kati and Bug know i know!
That's the line that really gets me every time.

Emily Noon I think ts the one: Joe Alwyn. But since she wrote the “1” instead of word “one” I think this song is inspired by Calvin Harris. They had 1 year relationship. "You know the greatest films of all time were never made"
"And if you never bleed you never gonna grow"
These both lines hit me so hard!
Folklore and Evermore are definitely the best albums of Taylor.
and 1989
Hard disagree.
WORST:
11. Midnights
10. Lover
09. Debut
MIDDLE TIER:
08. Reputation
07. Evermore
06. Fearless
05. Speak Now
BEST:
04. Red
03. Folklore
02. 1989
01. TTPD
I know everyone hates TTPD but I've been a fan of TS since around 2018 & I didn't get the hype surrounding Evermore & Midnights. At first I didn't even like Folkore but ended up considering it among her 4 best albums. But TTPD I loved instantly. I've listened to it at least twice a day since it's release day & I don't see that changing anytime soon. It has so many of her top tier songs.

*But Daddy I Love Him
*My Boy Only Breaks His Fav
*Down Bad
*Guilty As Sin
*Who's Afraid
*Fresh Out The Slammer
*I Can Do It
*Smallest Man Who Ever

*Fortnight
Some of my favs are on Evermore like Ivy & RWYLM, but otherwise it felt like the less inspired version of Folklore or the Folklore B sides to me. But agree that Folklore is 1 of her best & has many of her top tier songs like August, TLGAD, The Lakes, Exile, The 1, etc.
"And if my wishes came true, it would've been you."

And yes, A Beatles fan should know all about pop songs, although the lads had serious and almost universally-recognised credibility as songwriters.
she makes smart pop with meaningful lyrics
Another romantic song about Matty Healy - the love of her life and the loss of her life. - "the roaring twenties" - they met when they were 25. Another lyric "rose flowing with your chosen family" - Matty's band is his chosen family and he loves to drink red wine.

this album just hits different, lyrically speaking. if you’re like me, someone who does not listen to alternative songs so much, you might not like folklore at the first glance. i know i didn’t. but keep listening, and study the lyrics. this woman of the decade is a genius. she poured out her heart, her experiences, her aches, her struggles, her imaginations, her hope, her anxiety, and most importantly her love into the lyrics in this album. once i understand the meaning of the songs, i fell in love with folklore and now it’s been over a month but i just can’t stop replaying all of the songs.
#1 the 1 opens up with a cheery, somewhat upbeat/hearty tone. it’s just the perfect intro to open the album. “if one thing had been different, would everything be different today?” i often find myself questioning the same thing for the turns of events that happened in my life.

“If one thing had been different, would everything be different today?”
Of all of the amazing lyrical content of this song, multiple lines give me chills, this one has to hit me the hardest.
💜
you deserve so much better. you were putting in effort and she stopped
i cant get over how close this resonates with my own life, like the way each detail is so close and relatable. and the way you described your apprehensions and what ifs, I think about that everyday even though im on friendly relations with my ex.
March1 is tomorrow ✨️. Hope you are doing better🤩
