  • This truck had two bad exterior door handles on the driver and passenger side so they were replaced. The handles were about 60 bucks each from a local auto parts store.

Just did this repair for the third time. Outside. About 28 degrees. High wind and strong gusts. Sun setting. And I didn't have the correct nut driver to get those handle bolts. But I managed to get it done, and it's working again, and I thank you. I especially love how you made this video with no voice-over. What a peaceful watching experience.
Each winter, with the first biting cold, the cheap plastic snaps on one these handles and I have to order a new part. This time, I found one in which the two moving pieces that usually break have been replaced with metal, so hopefully this is the last time I'll have to do this job.
    Wishing you peace.

Nice touch with the horses. I like your approach in leaving the key lock inside the door.

A few vital parts were missing from this video - disconnecting the opening/locking rods as part of taking the old door handle out, removing the door lock and installing it in the new handle, and reconnecting the rods. Good fundamentals, but details missing.

Wish you would’ve explained how to remove the lock mechanism from the handle. I wasnt able to replace my handle and wasted 25$ on the part. Can’t even open my door

I put the new handle in and now the old lock will not lock the door with the key. I can lock the door from the inside and then unlock it with the key but I cannot lock the door with the key.

He left that part out. You can swap it out. Look at it and you can see how to remove and snap back in. He should have showed that.

Did you lube the pivot points on the latch mechanism below? I've replaced my outside door handles (4 times on the driver's side), and they keep breaking. Someone mentioned lubricating the pivots (especially the one on the shaft going down to operate the latch) to reduce resistance. New ones have worked seemingly fine until they fail less than two years later every time.

I went to one of the Tacoma forums, and the best suggestion is what I did: remove the entire latch mechanism from the latch edge of the door and thoroughly clean it. A dirty latch causes enough resistance to break most replacement handles. The person who posted said the latch would work so smoothly that even the cheapest handle would be fine. He wasn't lying. Once I removed the mechanism (not that much more work once the interior panel is removed) I found that it was so covered in dirt that it was just a brown shapeless lump. I first surface cleaned it with a chip brush, then started the real cleanup and lube using Ballistol, a firearm cleaner/lube. It's safe on plastics, unlike some other lubricants, which is why I chose to use it. The driver's side has worked like new since then, and I literally did the passenger's side last week.

I didn’t have to remove the door cart all the way to switch my handles over little bit of a short cut to just leave the window roller

I wasted an hour and gave myself a blister trying to do it that way as shown in a different video. Only a screwdriver and a pick tool worked for me (and was a lot less effort)
