Yeah, I have the dog tag one and assembled it with bevel up (obviously didn't work) and then found this video. Tried it out on a Costco milk jug. Damn perfect. What a creative idea. I love this thing. Don't know when I'll use it, but it's been added to my multi-day pack first aid/tool kit as something useful to have when you don't think you'll need it. Thanks Grim. Great kickstarter!
was the blade facing the same way in the setup section and the bottle cutting section? It seemed the bottle was cutting from the "handle hole" side of the card, but it looked like you installed the blade facing the bottom of the card in the previous section?
Thanks for the video! The "instructions" that came with the card were horrendous! One little off-kilter diagram that was blurry and caused me to assemble it EXACTLY BACKWARDS! What would it have cost to just put one detailed instruction sheet in the package?!
Just got mine today and it’s a nightmare! Even put together correctly I can’t seem to get anything longer than a couple of inches without it cutting itself off. Practice makes perfect I suppose, we’ll see.
@@InimitaPaul Hey Paul! We have a video where i process a bottle step by step in real time. That might help. Also be sure your blade is placed with the flat side up (bevel down) heres a link to the video where i process a bottle and walk you through it. th-cam.com/video/0HJuonrZ3Gc/w-d-xo.html
Grim Workshop I’ve done everything as shown mate but it just won’t do as advertised. Sliding the bottle in and having it catch the blade is no problem but the moment you try to pull it through it either cuts itself off after a few inches or, more frequently, clogs everything up to the point I have to unscrew everything to be able to even try again. I’ve been at this for well over an hour with different bottles and it makes no difference. All angling the blade does is make it easier for the bottle to catch the blade, it does nothing for making it actually cut in any significant length.
@@InimitaPaul email us at support@grimworkshop.com and we can get a replacement screw sent to you. If it's clogging, that usually only happens when your blade is facing the wrong way. We just uploaded another instruction video maybe that one will help you more. They work exactly like we show in the video, I promise we'll get it working perfectly for you. It does sound like the blades facing the wrong way. We'll get things straightened out.
Either I am going cross-eyed (entirely possible) or the blade orientation differs between the assembly and usage videos ... It looked to me as if the sharp edge of the blade pointed away from the carabiner hole during assembly, but toward the hole during usage. Am I wrong? And does the orientation matter, or can the blade be installed either way as long as usage matches blade orientation?
The blade edge should face AWAY from the carabineer hole for most reliable operation, and the blade bevel facing down is the most important thing. If you don't do that you'll just get little short bits of Cordage. I could have been using an older prototype model in the usage video it's one we posted a while back.
Is there a video for the "dogtag" model? I used the card, and put the razor bevel down, and all I was able to generate was strips of plastic rope. The longest one was about 7". Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Yes, there's a video we uploaded a day or two ago that is for the dog tag specifically. We've also got a seperate video that walks you through using it
Great tool, just received my card version the design of the product could be improved... the functionality on the other hand great... already packed it with my gear
my micro came in and it seems you instruct to put the blade on backwards in this video (blade faces the W in the way its asembled but it cuts into the bottle from the G side in the demonstration) as pulling the plastic through makes the blade go the wrong way and i cut myself. when i put the blade on the other way, the way that made sense to me, it was largely ineffective. Have to say im a bit disappointed.
Hey there, sorry you're having trouble, the way it is assembled in the video, is the correct way. you can find a video on using your tool if you have any difficulties via the link here th-cam.com/video/0HJuonrZ3Gc/w-d-xo.html
Good video. The instruction card that came with the kit needs work as you already know. Some other feedback - perhaps think about including a sharper blade for thicker bottles. I just tried it on a Sword (sports drink) bottle and it shaved rather than cut the plastic. I couldn't get it to cut deeply enough to create a consistent line of cordage. Looks like the model I got today only works on thinner plastic bottles as shown in the video. Maybe that will help with future versions.
They're available for pre order on our website right now. Www.grimworkshop.com they will mail out in the next couple weeks, after the Kickstarter backers go out
Nice! The printed instructions that come with the card could benefit from a little more clarity; that tilted view drawn on it didn't make it clear to me which direction the blade would be facing. (This video made it very easy though!)
I'm glad the video helped, i apologize for the instructions being unhelpful, we corrected them, so hopefully in the future this wont be an issue for anyone =)
Great question! It's half as thick first of all, it's got a guard added to it for safety, which makes it way easier to store, and we also added the large carabinier hole for carrying it on the outside of a pack. So the function is exactly the same, but this model is much more compact and safe.
I’ll tell you what, I want this to work so much better then I’m able to get it too at the moment. I will keep at it till I’ve figured it out but it’s rather not easy at first.
You show the sharp edge against the screw but pull away from it as if the back side of the edge is doing the cutting. Even your instructions on the micro tool say to do this. You might want to look into that
I noticed this as well, you are cutting the bottle with the edge facing towards the cutout in the card, opposite from your instructions. With your way, there's nothing to stop the blade from swinging out except the tension of the screws! Another flaw in the design is only a tiny portion of the blade gets used, and must be replaced when 90% of it is still sharp. Would be nice if the blade was adjustable so more of the edge could be used!
Got mine today. Needs a little practice I think. I suspect there's an optimal thickness for a bottle. One thing I would worry about on the road is these little nuts coming off. I don't think they make nylon lock nuts that small so will have to consider a glue fixing to keep them in place which can always be scraped off for changing the blade. And yes, the printed instructions are terrible! Glad you've changed them.
They do take a little practice. If the nuts are tight, there shouldn't be any issues with them falling off, I've carried them all over for a while now and never had any problems with that. If your worried though a little lock tight could help
As promised I'm back. It works fine but it does need a bit of practice. The hard bit is getting the cord started as there's nothing really to grab onto. It a case of pushing the bottle through on the blade until there's enough cord to grab. I suspect also the bottle needs to be kept perpendicular to the blade to get a consistent length, not always easy leading to a cut-off point as you end up angling the blade to the cut. One thing to add, I'd take a file to the card itself to dull the edges as I've gotten a couple razor cuts each time I've used it.
Starting it is definitely the hardest part. Either you have to feed it till you've got about 6" length to grab, or you can grab it with a pair of pliers or a multi-tool when it's still a tiny piece, that works really well
@@grimworkshop9830 Yes. I just wanted to see how I'd do given an outdoor situation where I don't have access to pliers or a multi-tool. Maybe there's the answer, I should have a multi-tool to hand in the wild! Which of course is true.
Blade orientation? I went with the way it's shown in use, so the screw under the "TOP" piece also prevents the blade from pivoting when the material is pulled through. It does mean less "channel" to guide the material on the input side, though. Which is the correct orientation as intended? I've successfully rendered a water bottle into two nicely long strands, but the soft/thin nature of that material makes for some uneven widths. Assembly sucks if you aren't blessed with such dainty hands. And I have two more to put together... and the expansion kit... maybe. Yay.
We've released newer videos showing the micro and dog tag versions that also detail the blade orientation and placement more specifically if that helps, as well as a video where we walk you through using it, if that helps
Agreed that the video for assembly worked but only if you pull the bottle thru in the opposite direction of the second half of the video where you demonstrate the use. You seriously should replace this with a video where both are correct. I also questioned the design where instead of the screw holding the blade in place by acting as a post to keep it from moving you have it being held in place via the tension on the spacer.
@@grimworkshop9830 I did disassemble the card sized one and tried pulling a rope off it.
