These guys were killer musicians, every one of them. That drum shuffle is famously difficult to get perfect, and Jeff Porcaro is respected as one of the great drummers of all time. I just recently read that even Jeff said that shuffle was a pain in the ass to perform live, haha. The other thing is that the outro was cut for radio airplay, which sucks because it's so good.
Steve Lukather is one of the most underrated guitarist..Most notably, Lukather played guitar on Boz Scaggs' albums Down Two Then Left (1977) and Middle Man (1980),[1] and was a prominent contributor to several studio albums by Michael Jackson, including Thriller (1982). Steve Lukather worked with Eddie Van Halen on Thriller.
When asked what’s it like to be the best guitarist in the world, EVH said, I don’t know, you should ask Steve Lukather... Both brilliant and humble musicians 👏👏👏
This is a roller coaster of a song. My friends Dad would blast this song in his conversion van when he dropped us off at school in 7th grade. This will always be my favorite Toto song.
A big hit from 41 yrs ago! I remember when it first came on the radio. By the way, my Auntie’s name is Rosanna and she wanted her name pronounced the way you first said it!
I was 7in 1982 when this came out. I remember I had a plastic guitar that was blue and had flames on it. When this song came on I’d go nuts and pretend to solo like a wild man. Good times!!
This was their masterpiece, winning the Grammy for record of the year. My favorite is I Won't Hold You Back, a #1 Adult Contemporary ballad that hit the Top 10 in the pop chart. Written and sung by their guitarist Steve Lukather. Always fun to see the most hard rocker in the band and a guitar legend crank out a lost love song to rival any ever written. But it isn't a banger if that's all your after.
The drumming you noticed in the beginning is the Rosanna shuffle by Jeff Pocaro, which is based on the Purdie Shuffle by Bernard Lee "Pretty" Purdie. Such a funky groove!
Steve Lukather has played on hundreds of songs. Outside of Toto he was one of the most prolific session players. He wrote the guitar part to Human Nature by Michael Jsckson. He played rhythm on Beat It. He was on more tracks in the 80s than anyone else. Luke is a legend in music, and incidentally, one of Eddie Van Halen's closest friends.
Loved it JayRah....soo cool to see a great reaction to this song. My sister bought this album when I was 11 and I listened to it way more than she did so she just let me have it....thanks again
Toto were regulars on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, Boz Scaggs, Sonny and Cher, and many others, contributing to many of the most popular records of the 1970s.
I saw that a lot of other folks have reacted to this song but but not of them will be as good as yours so I won't bother watching them. You reacquainted me with the finer points of this song which I think are the instrumental jams. Thanks Jay Rah.
It’s actually not written about her, David Paich just used her name because he needed a hook, and since she was dating Steve Porcaro, well there you go.
You obviously know something about music by your comments..respect. This song is a masterpiece in any genre..i hope you go back and listen to all the incredible fills and intricacies involved here..incredible.
1 member dated Rosanna Arquette, subject of this song. Irony: Video to She's a Beauty starred the late brother of Rosanna! The dancer Cynthia Rhodes married Richard Marx in the early 90s. Steve Lukather is one of the most sought after session players in the world. He's played on a whole bunch of songs by many "A list" stars. A great example is Steve Lukather's outro solo on "Running With the Night" by Lionel Ritchie. Let me just add to the "Africa" chorus. That is one that would be a good "next step" in the Toto catalogue Really love your reactions man. LL&P 🖖
The best musicians! They were the band on MJ’s Thriller album! By the way…If you haven’t heard their version of ‘Africa’ ..don’t miss it. It’s just a unique recording and a wonderful song!
This was the one, as far as I'm concerned - this is the track where it ALL came together for Toto into a pretty perfect package. I favor their earlier stuff generally, when they leaned a little bit progressive (the title track off of Hydra, for instance), but Rosanna is so nice and that shuffle drum pattern just so tight.
If you have time check out the MV, Cynthia Rhodes (Dirty Dancing etc) was the main dancer and a very young Patrick Swayze is also one of the dancers. It also was West Side Story gang fight themed and Michael Jackson liked it enough to borrow it for Beat It. Good stuff as usual JRV!
One of Toto's best songs that no one reacts to.. "Stranger In Town".. the music video is pretty cool too.. it stars Brad Dourif (Chucky, Lord of the Rings).
Jeff Porcaro just groovin' on the drums like it's a Sunday morning, despite the technically complex drum beat (when you break it down) and the time pressure in the studio. In my personal Top 5 of drummers, easily.
All you need to know is that Perdie Shuffle drum sequence. Same as in Steely Dan’s “Babylon Sisters” and Led Zepplin’s “Fool in the Rain”. After this, you’ve gotta listen to those. One of the most difficult drum sequences.
Your comments on the former song and the current song are from the heart, and I agree. I feel like you are more musically educated than the average song reactors. You picked up on nuances the average listener might not. "Hold The Line" is definitely more formatted, whereas "Rosanna" steps into prog rock. As a fan, I think no one else could touch so many styles in one song, as Toto.
You should watch the Rick Beato "What makes this song great" episode he did on this song, if you are really in to the music. So many little things going on in this song that many people don't even hear.
Love your reaction so much, thank you! Would love for you to knock out some Allman Brothers . Don't be so hard on yourself bro. You weren't necessarily wrong. I've been a full time musician for thirty plus years. I grew up on bands like ToTo. It's interesting that you found "Hold The Line" generic. I'm not a fan of Africa. I feel the same way about that. It's super produced (maybe over-produced), and your right that Hold the Line it's very eighties. But it's upper end eighties. I really like it. But you're not wrong in your assessment. Not every song has to hit everyone the same. I enjoy your reactions for the simple fact that you hear the subtleties in songs. You're clearly knowledgeable of what you are listening to. So give yourself some credit. If you don't like something about a song, you're probably right. - Cheers
Fun fact; When they met in the studio to record this, they went over the notes briefly, did a hot take, and that first run through is what we're hearing now. Unbelievable but true.

One of the greatest drum shuffles of all time. RIP Jeff Porcaro.

Yeah, it was called the Purdy shuffle, named after Bernard Purdy who invented it.
