One of the absolute best and original bands of the era. I still spin both LPs to this day. Rare live performance here in awesome sound and visual quality. Wow, thanks so much!
I GOT INTO PUNK IN 78 --79 AND I'M STILL A PUNK TODAY 😁 AS THEY SAY IN IT 4 LIFE..??? AM NOW 52 YRS OLD .... ANYHOOS I LOVE THIS BAND AND THIS SONG ( SET UP ) I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE THEM PLAY IN EXETER UNIVERSITY IN 1981 ( MY AUNTY SNEEKED ME IN...!! ) AS I WAS 12YRS OLD AND THEY WERE AWESOME I'D LOVE TO SEE THEM REFORM AND PLAY AGAIN 😁😎☮️☯️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴🏴💣💣💣💥💥🔥🔥
I played this at my mom's house the other day and she had a whole flash back to having this on tape in the 80's, i always wanted to connect over music with my mom, it just took me years to get deep enough into the real shit!
How could it be that only just discovered this clip? The person who uploaded this is a wonderful human being. Thanks so much. Love, Love, Love Au Pairs!
So good, bass, drums, voice of Lesley Woods and the lyrics. This band makes me happy. And the energy in live! Both studio and live are equal but different!
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO SICK!!!! You tube is amazing for bringing us these musical gems. But where are the full OGWT sets of this performance and a John cooper clarke set from 78!!!! Ive been hunting all over for that....
A BBC3 doc brought me to this gem! Sooooo good, agree with sister sister in that it's like Gang of Four. Visceral, dancable, it's brilliant! Must add Au Pairs to my post-punk listening ...
I remember that. Saw them twice, one time was somewhere in Soho, 100 club I think. 80/81. I googled twice, year ago, 2 years ago, found lots of pics, but nothing came up for youtube. Now I was watching a The Slits video and noticed this in the related/suggested list.
One of the first albums I ever bought..pink vinyl..still thrash the CD version to this day..they had that eclectic mix ..not too obscure..not too punk..not too new wave..luv them madly..Great to bonk to also in the wee hours..or anytime of day for that matter..hehee
Christ it's so tedious listening to people who constantly feel the need to say what bands a certain band sounds like. Just listen to it and take it for what it is. It's an au pairs song therefore it sounds like the au pairs.
pete hammond on drums and paul foad on guitar a good mate both still on the music scene paul is a great jazz guitarist lol who would have thunk and mr hammond is still giging with various outfits top brummies
Last saw Pete at Ronnie Scotts on Broad St, Birmingham (Freddy Cole gig I think) Great drummer is Pete. 40 yrs ago we would go to Au Pairs, Denizens etc gigs so regular it were great times... Nowt wrong with nostalgia if it's better than today.
There isn't ANYTHING that isn't completely right with this... the physicality, the intelligence, the laser-focused commentary on society, gender and culture, the destruction of rock roles and cliches.... and all this as bodies ricochet around the stage.... David Byrne's recent shows LOOK like this, but they don't break things down quite as totally or convincingly...
It really wouldn't have hurt to use a second chord somewhere. And a third melody note. Would it? And that bloke on guitar. James Brown wouldn't only have fined him and sacked him, he may have done a lot worse. Those 'moves' were fucking insufferable.
Agreed. I understand people may well be infatuated with their po-faced politicking, but it doesn't excuse the sub-musical mumbling monotony.... (& I speak as one who bought a copy of "Sense and Sensuality" or whatever the hell 'twas called)

Fantastic
LOVE in Berlín Vinyl es un escándalo legendario 😊💪😎💪😎
The best band no one’s heard of
You're right. The riff is fantastic. I only heard this in an 80s doc on BBC 2 and I just had to track it down, brilliant stuff.
I've heard of them.
One of my favs when I was young
That bass line sums up my early 80`s
Fantastic drumming.
The Au Pairs is one of my favourite bands. From my city of Birmingham too.
Wow! This was released the year I was born! I only just heard it on a BBC doc, I just had to track it down after hearing that riff.
We watched the same documentary. This is for sure post-punk disco-not-disco, UK style.

Brilliant. And always were.
I was weeping so badly when i saw this the first time. goes straight in BOOM what a band !
Yes, that's the feeling. and you should encourage others with your example
1981 was a cool year for music.
I remember them. And they were way better than most of what was in the charts at that time - and now.
So good, bass, drums, voice of Lesley Woods and the lyrics. This band makes me happy. And the energy in live! Both studio and live are equal but different!
forgot all about this band until last friday's bbc doc reminded me of them....cheers beeb
Not a woman or man could compete with this amazing set of musicians. Just amazing humans making amazing music.
WOW, spectacular! I loved them so much.
One of the great post punk bands. went away far too soon.
Too soon could an understatement. That third release was posthumus. And it was their best! Go figure.
I only listened to Gang Of Four's debut album for the first time a few months ago, but this sounds very similar to that style.
It was the zeitgeist of the times.
They toured with Gang of Four at some time
saw them twice Aston Uni and a gig in Ludlow. What a wonderful band better live and were brilliant on record. Please come and do a gig in Exeter
Great song and performance
Absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!
Brave band .. brilliant music
Lesley Woods is supporting the Chameleons on their summer UK tour 2023
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO SICK!!!! You tube is amazing for bringing us these musical gems. But where are the full OGWT sets of this performance and a John cooper clarke set from 78!!!! Ive been hunting all over for that....
Great band, much too underrated for many, those years! Ever in our hearts, Though
Ace live performance. Tks a lot.
Great. Saw them live at Redcar Coatham Bowl. 1980-81.
Saw them at the Rock Garden supporting Tom Robinson around the same time
Saw these live,brilliant
@loopy Ruane don't remember,back in eightys
without a doubt one of the tightest bands to ever perform on ogwt
D'you think their tightness would have fallen apart if they'd introduced a second chord?
I saw them many times live and they were one of my fvourite bands,,.brings back great memories to listen to this again. Thank you!
just amazing, nothing else to add. Playing with a different attitude... Always on my list!!!
I used to have some 45's of theirs.Nice to see them.
Nice upload
saw these at Ludlow town hall years back
still sounds good
Thanks

gang of 4 with female vocals - fun stuff
A tus pies
😊
Mijn juicht. 32 jaar later, goede herinneringen, SUPER
Great performance ....I love the Scars performances on OGWT as well!
Deep basslines here!
So Good.......Punk meets .Ska...........
The drummer just played in kings heath at a car show , blues. It was short but sweet
OMG, why does this not surprise me!!!
Playing with a different sex is up there with metal box as one of the best post punk albums
you're spot on. too advanced for me !
Brilliant band. They also played Armagh on this live performance despite being asked not to. Last thing they did for the BBC apparently
I remember that. Saw them twice, one time was somewhere in Soho, 100 club I think. 80/81. I googled twice, year ago, 2 years ago, found lots of pics, but nothing came up for youtube. Now I was watching a The Slits video and noticed this in the related/suggested list.
Between the OGWT cameras for their Dancefloor video, and the riff in this song, i am guessing the Arctic Monkeys have seen this video !
Brilliant
wow, truly inflencial-sounds like all the "post-punk revival" bands today.
Without Andy Gill this sound would not have existed
One of the first albums I ever bought..pink vinyl..still thrash the CD version to this day..they had that eclectic mix ..not too obscure..not too punk..not too new wave..luv them madly..Great to bonk to also in the wee hours..or anytime of day for that matter..hehee
Really? You fuck to this?? :(
Ain’t no way dawg
Nice vibe
I would suggest most highly that you find a place in your heart for me.
WOW!!
Playing with a different sex - brilliant album
Buy all their music and play it loudly, the only advice I can give.
Great band, pós-Punk "!!!!!!
sounds like Morrissey met the Talking Heads at a Clash show.
I also had the same feeling when I first listened to them.
... spiced with a great dose of GANG OF 4 ...
Aye it seems The Smiths weren't that special in retrospect.
@@gsixties Very Gang of 4 but MUCH MUCH better melodies and arrangements.
Christ it's so tedious listening to people who constantly feel the need to say what bands a certain band sounds like. Just listen to it and take it for what it is. It's an au pairs song therefore it sounds like the au pairs.
loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The studio recording of this sounds so much like Cath Carrol and Miaow
❤️💯🥂
Anyone think her voice sounds like Natalie Merchant? Did this band influence her and 10,000 Maniacs? 🤔
They no longer exist. Imagine if that was not the case.
pete hammond on drums and paul foad on guitar a good mate both still on the music scene paul is a great jazz guitarist lol who would have thunk and mr hammond is still giging with various outfits top brummies

This is certainly early 80s New Wave . Im surprised there is no keyboard's 😊
Why weren't they Bigger! X
f... fab
Lesley Woods looks like the main villain in Chicken Run
anybody know when they played CBGB's ?
Is like *Gang Of Four but with a Female singer* , just it.
Great song. I would like it a lot more if I didn’t hate women so much though. Love from Kazakhstan ❤️🔥
Didn't know Morrissey had a sister.
