Tip #9 Absolutely! Using the time feature has made a huge difference in planning our driving holidays. It's seriously worth spending the time to map out stop-by-stop as a multi-stop journey might appear to be 3 hours, but plan it stop by stop and it could realistically be 6 hours drive time. Great to see you two favourite TH-camrs doing a collab!
Also, go to Malibu, instead of dirty, dangerous Venice beach. Avoid Hollywood Blvd altogether! Go to Sunset Plaza, Robertson, Beverly drive in Beverly Hills, Studio City, ANYWHERE but Hollywood Blvd!! It’s NOT just the carpool lane, but the regular 1 person LEFT LANE you must drive FAST or move over too!! …..the more LEFT on the freeway, the FASTER you drive.
Two of my favorite California TH-camrs! Imho one cool way to plan your CA vacation is to pick a season and a region and explore from there. Don’t forget winter. We have great ski resorts.
Chris nice bumping into you at the Children's zoo today. I HIGHLY recommend that triple burger I ordered for your viewers. I have had almost all the food there...and that Honey Bee restaurant is so far the best. The fries are definitely the best in the whole park. I had their wings too. Very good.
@@YellowProductions maybe in the future :). I can definitely rate the food lol. I have tried them all over the years. I also know some hidden gems there. It is a magical place of great inspiration.
We were there in July/Aug and totally agree with your point one, we did way, way too much in three weeks as we’d never done the West Coast before. (LA, LV, DVNP, Lake Tahoe, SF, Pismo, S Barbara, LA and S Monica). But have to disagree about DV in summer. Amazing experience. Already planning a return from the UK but with less stops.
Hi Chris. Thanks for the great tips. Some of these mistakes can be avoided in other placers too. Especially trying to do much and not budgeting enough for your trip. Take care.
Hey Chris. Just joined your channel after seeing you and Josh on his Huntington Beach episode of CA through my Lens. Look forward to checking out more of your content. Too funny about diamond lane driving and calling SF "frisco". that is a sure way to get all the Northern California folks up in arms. they are always like it's "the city" or "San Francisco" as you know. But I went to college with a lot of them and we always used to say "No Cal, No Sun, No Fun!" Me being a lifelong southern CA resident. Anyway thanks for the video and have a good weekend!
I needed this 2 weeks ok when I was in San Fran - oops, San Francisco! The tip on SF weather was bang on, I thought it was still summer-ish, but needed a jacket in the mornings so had to buy one.
Just watched Josh's video on Huntington Beach and figured I'd head over here. We went to Death Valley in December and it was an amazing 65 degrees. I just ate an In N Burger Animal Style for the first time, and was taught all the 4x4, 8x8 secret menu items for future use lol. Great video.
@@californiathroughmylens I was told that you really had to be an eater to finish it 🤣. Took me several trips to finally understand the In N Out phenomenon lol
My favorite Cali TH-camr encyclopedias. Was just out there in September had a slamming awesome vacation because of you both being subbed for two years now. Great channels. From Delaware.
It's good that you mentioned the CA national parks. I think a lot of people forget about them. Carrying tire chains in the winter is a good tip. CA freeway driving is terrible. Many drivers have no lane discipline and have no situational awareness. Drivers driving slow in the commuter lane and in the fast lane is very common.
Also be aware if you’re traveling in extreme heat and cold bring a paper map or instructions and know how to use them. Heat can cause your iPhone to shut down. It happened to me when I was driving and the Ac was on. If you use the iPhone for directions and you’re in Death Valley in summer - oops. you can actually take the train as metro transportation in SF , LA and San Diego and I recommend it. It’s cheaper than parking and often faster thanks to traffic.
@@YellowProductions one time I was driving to Vegas or Utah on the freeway ( no chance of getting lost) and it was so hot my phone shut off to protect the battery. So I learnt don’t depend on your gps in extreme weather. At the very least make sure you wrote down the instructions if your phone says it going to shut down.
Silly Rabbit; You do not drive in San Francisco! Walk, taxi or Uber. San Francisco also has Muni Underground transit that is not Bart You can take Amtrak Coast Starlight and come into San Francisco on the Amtrak bus. It is a spectacular ride!
Awesome collab! California is quite a neat state to visit. I haven't visited any of the national parks there yet, but I would love to make another trip there soon to check some of them out.
The ocean water in CA is always cold here. And CA is huge. Def pick a limited amount of things you can do in the time frame you have. And traffic times is key. I know so many who followed what gps said on a Monday night at 9pm as a guide for how long it would take to there on a Friday afternoon. And Yes! Most people think of CA as Los Angeles and San Francisco. But CA has so many incredible national parks. But the best time to go is spring. That way you can comfortably see all of them and not busy! Summer can be terribly crowded in CA national parks. One great thing about In and Out burger. I always ask for extra lettuce and tomato. No upcharge. And their meal is very affordable. If people want to see movie stars , they should go to visit Ojai or montecito or Santa Barbara where they actually live. But still probably not see them. And locals know so many great things to do like almond blossom or wild flower super blooms or monarch butterfly season. I think most people make the mistake of wanting to come to CA only for Disneyland snd Hollywood and miss some really amazing sights. If I bring people to LA I take them to the Getty or Huntington Library then go get Ethiopian food or go to a real Japanese noodle house or get real Korean food(not bbq) or pupusas at a pupuseria or Israeli or Lebanese food. The food culture in LA is incredible. My friends who visit talk a lot more about the time we got Korean food at a Korean spa in LA or Yosemite and sequoia national park than Disneyland or Beverly Hills
I remember going to Huntington Beach at night in August. I thought it would be warm during that month so I went there with shorts and a short sleeved t-shirt. It was freezing. Good thing they had fire rings so that kept me warm.
Oh my gosh …. you both knocked this CA travel information out of the park ⚾️ I grew up in San Francisco …I now live about an hour north in the Wine Country! I love baseball so San Diego Petco Park is great. Yes, sorry I am one of those SF Giants fans 😊 I also love Disneyland! Your BEST advice when visiting our state is stay out of the fast lanes unless you are passing faster than anyone else. 🤣 Move over 👏🏻Thank you both ! ❤️
I was on a road trip going from the coast to Tahoe while the almond trees were in bloom. Beautiful but, between petals & bees, my car needed two washes to get clean at the end of the day.
Interesting video. We went to Death Valley in July, it was hot 🔥, but if dressed for the heat, and hydrated it's tolerable. I had on a flannel shirt (long sleeved) and a wool sweater, a baseball style cap: I was the coolest in our family. The others had short sleeves and too much skin exposed, and were miserable. Definitely not a good idea to take an air cooled car there in the summer. We came across a Corvair that had overheated and caught fire.
I don't agree that the carpool lane is the fast lane. I do agree you shouldn't be driving the speed limit but should be going with the flow of traffic. But the HOV was never designed to be the fast lane. I'm not going to be driving the fastest with my vehicle full of family members.
We also made the mistake of going to Death Valley this summer. We were aware of how hot it would get, but didn't know about the flash floods. The flash floods impacted our road trip even more then the heat did. We barely were able to escape Death Valley and were almost stranded at The Ranch (which would have been horrible, since the food there is pretty bad). I now strongly recommend my fellow Europeans travelling to CA not to go to Death Valley in the summer.
