    2:09 - Hanging and Wiring the Chandelier
    Some important disclaimers before we get started:
    1. Make sure you read fully and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any of these steps and for any electrical connections that are to come.
    2. Safety is of top importance when working with electrical connections. Make sure the wall power switch is in the off position and that the power is turned off at the breaker box.
    Use a voltage meter to double-check.
    3. If you are not comfortable working with electrical wiring, we strongly recommend using the services of a licensed, professional electrician. Lamps Plus offers installation service in select areas; contact your local store for details.
    To get started, let’s look what you get with each hanging system.
    Chain-hung designs come with chain and electrical wire. And like the other systems, they include a canopy that covers the electrical connections at the ceiling.
    Test-hang your chandelier and measure how much chain you’ll need. Remove chain links with pliers to shorten to the right length. Thread the wire through the chain to the canopy. Allow for a foot or so of excess and use wire cutters to trim any un-needed length. To install, you’ll thread through the wire through the chain to the canopy.
    Cord-hung chandeliers or pendants hang from cord. Again, do a test-hang to figure out how much you’ll need and use wire cutters to trim any un-needed length.
    Downrod chandeliers hang from lengths of hollow tube rods that screw together. You get several lengths of downrod stems. Note that the rods are not cuttable - the entire length of a downrod has to be used. Electrical wire is threaded through the tube to the junction box connection. Again, trim any excess that’s not needed.
    Some chandeliers or pendants are low voltage designs that use a transformer or driver. The transformer or driver is concealed in the canopy. Run your cord or electrical wire to them and make a connection there. A pre-wired connection is on the transformer or driver that you then connect to the electrical box.
    Installing a chandelier or pendant requires a ceiling junction box. If you do not have a junction box, or if it is in the wrong position in your room, you’ll have to have a new one installed.
    Standard junction electrical boxes have a max load of fifty pounds. If your chandelier weighs more than that you’ll need a support safety brace. We carry these if you need one.
    To do the wiring, make sure the power is disconnected, then remove your old fixture. Unscrew the canopy, and un-do the wiring. There will be three wires: a white, black, and a copper ground wire. Lift the new fixture and screw the mounting bar to the electrical box.
    Wrap the copper ground wire around the junction box grounding screw, tighten it, then connect the wire's end to the chandelier's ground wire.
    Then, strip around a half inch of insulation from the white and black wires. Use a twist-on connector to join the chandelier's white wire to the junction box’s white wire. Do the same with the black wire.
    Carefully tuck the wires into the junction electrical box and secure the canopy.
    Install any bulbs, then turn the power back on and enjoy!

    Am I the only one that noticed he did not cover threading the power line through the threaded tube at the top? I think having the chain installed first however, not showing how to thread the power line into the threaded tube is a big misstep in the installation process. In the video it is just magically threaded through. I hope this is clear.

    If you are hanging one of those Crystorama lights, it is not at all clear in the instructions, but I had to thread the wires through the center of the cross brace and out the top and back down. There was no other feasible way to screw the cover on. Had to do it over 4 times before I figured it out.

    what id like to know is the chandeliers that are connected by a string/wire do i have to use the full length of that wire or does it hide up in the canopy?

    • @lampsplus
      @lampsplus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi - no, you can always trim the wire, you don't have to leave the entire string of wire intact. In fact, for designs that hag from the wire, you would want to trim it to the desired hang height. You leave a little extra, of course, so you can make the electrical connection to the junction box, but you trim any excess you don't need. Hope that answer helps. If you have any additional comments reach our to us and one of our experts can help you out. Thank you!

    The wires from the ceiling were black and white. Were the wires from the chandelier red and blue? What color wire from the chandelier goes to what color wire from the ceiling?

    • @lampsplus
      @lampsplus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi - the wires from the ceiling were white and black, with black being the "hot" or live wire. The hot wire carries electricity from the breaker panel into the light source. The white wire is the "neutral" wire; this sends any unused electrical current back to the breaker.
      From the fixture, both wires look to be close to the same color, which happens sometimes. With most fixtures it doesn't matter which you connect to the ceiling black or white wires. However, there will usually be a slight texture or ridge on one of the fixture wires. This is considered the hot wire, and should be connected to the hot wire (the black wire) that's coming from the ceiling.
      Thanks for pointing this out! It gives us another idea for a new video where we can explore and explain the wiring colors more in depth. Thanks for your question!

    Hi, where does the copper wire go?

    • @lampsplus
      @lampsplus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi - the third copper colored wire coming from the ceiling junction box is the ground wire. Just to make things difficult on us homeowners, the ground wire is sometimes green instead of copper. If there is a green screw on the mounting bracket of your fixture, loop the exposed part of the wire around the screw, then tighten into place. If there is a grounding wire on your light fixture as well, attach the two grounds together and secure with a wire nut, just like you do with the black and white wires. Before doing any of this, be sure to read and follow all the directions that come with your fixture. Thanks for your question!

      @@lampsplus is it possible that some current is still travelling after you shut the power off from the junction box?

    • @MEM-fk9hs
      @MEM-fk9hs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GinoFerreri You don't shut off power from the junction box, you shut off power at the breaker box. The junction box is the little box in the ceiling. (Maybe terms are different where you are.) Turning it off at the breaker box turns off the power to the local junction box--IF the electrical box is labeled correctly. INCREDIBLY OFTEN, they are either not accurate or not complete. So using the voltmeter after turning it off at the breaker box is called double-checking! And it has saved many lives. Turn off power at the box, then *verify* that it's really off by checking the wires in the ceiling with a voltmeter.

    Had to give you a thumbs down based on the fact that although you threw in a disclaimer about contacting an electrician, this video is on installation tips. If you're going to contact an electrician, odds are you'll have them do the entire installation. If someone is watching this, I would think they are considering doing the entire installation themselves, including the electric. You were very vague on the electrical connections themselves, not explaining the difference between power, neutral, and ground. Also, on the way back you never remind the viewer to turn the breaker back on before turning the wall switch back on. Good quality video but content needs work.
