Isn't it lovely to think that when people went to see the aftershow, that Prince would give as much fire and passion as the show he had done before. He was the gift that kept giving and still missed the day he went on his new journey,Hopefully as he says in one one his beautiful songs,A whole lot better off than the fools he left here,Always loved that line.He was a master and wherever brother prince is,I hope he's jamming with the greats that went before him

Two things that always amazed me about Prince as a guitar player that I rarely see mentioned: the way he was glued to the rhythm, and the way he never left a note hanging. Do you notice that? He neeeever just plays a note and just mutes the string when he's done. Best example in this case is at 5:12 in your video. He always finishes his licks. Be it a run down the scale, be it a slide up, a slide down, anything. Every moment is musical. You will notice this once you do the classic Purple Rain at Syracuse performance.

    • @RBHADD
      @RBHADD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree…if I listen real close to his Super Bowl performance of Purple
Rain you hear similar details that are just him finishing a line…same with the recent Play That Funky music solo as he returns to the centre with the dancers after his solo..

As far as anyone knows, there is no video of that performance (way before cell phone cameras, of course, but even if there had been pro cameras there, lots of anecdotal reports say the lighting was very dim and the venue is small and intimate).
I seldom hear anyone acknowledge how Prince took a song that is all about classic Motown vocal harmonies, and made his guitar the central voice that carries the heartache to an amazing crescendo. One attendee has claimed that tears were streaming down Prince's face by the end of the solo. Kind of hits differently when you imagine that visual.

This was the first time I heard how WELL that Prince could play guitar, and it actually made me mad at him for hiding his talent for so long. His after shows started becoming legendary from this time forward; word started spreading fast; bootlegs of his performances quickly circulated among fans. But if all you knew about Prince was his studio output up through 1988, and maybe you caught the Purple Rain and Sign O' The Times or Lovesexy tours, you still didn't know exactly how AMAZING of a guitarist he was until you heard aftershow performances like this. Yes, he did amazing work on guitar before (I've since gone back in time to see how well he performed in his early 1980-1981 tours), but with this performance in particular, you feel how spontaneous and improvisational and how naturally-gifted he is as a live guitarist. No re-takes. No overdubs. It's all live and in the moment. Thanks again for another great reaction video. I'm glad you got around to this one. :)

    • @thesolitaryadventurer
      @thesolitaryadventurer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This is the forgotten truth and goes a long way to saying why people slept on Prince... The released output had no spotlight really put on his amazing guitar work.
Outside of a few intros and Purple Rain's solo, there was no real evidence on the albums that he could play THIS well. It would be perhaps Chaos and Disorder before the guitar work would be dominant on an album.
And unless you went to see him live, where it was obvious within moments of him slinging the axe, then it would be Awards shows or the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame induction before non-fans got a glimpse.
I had forgotten this aspect - great post.

@@thesolitaryadventurer Then when he, or should I say Warner Bros, did release singles they'd do something very annoying like fade out the song right before THE guitar solo! (cf. the "Purple Rain" and "Eye Hate U" singles. maybe "Gold" too? at least they kept it in "The Morning Papers" 1992) But yeah, 1994-1996, is really when he started releasing some really good guitar heavy songs. All we had before that (pre-internet) was the 1979 song, "Bambi" to keep pointing back to (not to mention 1978's "I'm Yours"), or if you were lucky you might have access in online forums to the "Poor Goo" (aka _The Undertaker_ ) set of performances from the year before, in 1993. Not saying he didn't have some really cool amazing guitar work going on in a lot of his songs, but it was often hidden back in the mix (cf. "Annie Christian" 1981, various songs on _1999_ from 1982, "Alexa De Paris" extended 1986). And you make a good point about his television or live video performances. That's really the only time "the world" in general had a chance to be exposed to how well he could play live guitar. I think this is why it took a long time for people to take note. Even Rolling Stone magazine missed the boat; then basically had to retract their earlier list of great guitarists (after the 2004 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame performance) by publishing a new list of The Most Underrated Guitarists of All Time where Prince landed at #1. ;)

He might have played more difficult and technical solos (hell... the same show... listen to disc 2 FYI !!!), but this was absolutely gorgeous! I couldn’t agree with you more in relation to guitarists who just concentrate on speed alone. I have watched many performers who have tried to be the fastest, but after a short while it all sounds the same. One big blur of sound.... when you consider all of the great solos, the true longevity is the story and the emotion that the solo incorporates to the song. When Prince plays his guitar solos, he plays them with the same emotion and passion as though he was singing the solo himself and telling a story. I’m really happy for you , the fact that you have have discovered one of the , if not the best all-time modern musical geniuses of our time.
I too used to play guitar and sing and write songs, but when I discovered Prince.. Wow,he really puts you in your place musically speaking. I was gobsmacked, astonished ,confused and annoyed that one individual could be blessed with so much musical talent.
I’m just blessed that I had the privilege of watching him perform five times when he came on tour to Australia. In particular, his last tour which was the piano and microphone tour. This was only two months prior to him passing away.
Not many musical artists can just sit there with no band or other musicians on stage , simply playing piano and singing to a full stadium and have everyone totally enthralled and standing on their feet dancing. His musical proficiency and adaptation of his songs was breathtaking to witness. So is the brilliance and genius that was Prince.

I must say, the sound quality of these youtube videos are so much better than the bootleg cds I have. Oh, and "Still Would Stand All Time" is another AWESOME and legendary performance from the same show. The bootleg goes by 2 titles. One is Small Club, the other is Trojan Horse.

I'll try to explain the sound quality (I'm Spanish). This is not an official recording but a "stolen" recording. It was recorded directly from the mixer board to a cassette tape and it doesn't have any kind of production or mixing labours. That means is some kind of "raw" sound. Also, this is one of his classical aftershows in small clubs, where he was even much freer to play whatever he wanted to: jams (the Intro), future songs (Still Would Stand All Time -1990*), impros, oldies (like this from The Temptations - MOTOWN!- or the Cold Sweat by James Brown)...
    * You can hear him yelling to someone in the band "who's the fool who singing 'will'?" LOL!
I have a memory of me going back home with this 3-vinyl and Paul's Boutique under my arm circa 1989... The happiest man in the world once again :)

Many songs I do that, I can pick the key of the song, the chords, the scales, etc... but then there are some songs that are on the "magical" level, where I don't want to think about it, like a mechanic looking under the hood of an awesome vehicle. This song is on that level for me. I'm a big fan of old Genesis, but in particular the albums Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering, that music is so magical for me, also for it's calming effect (I've had the oddest anxiety most of my life, as many do) the music is so magical I don't want to look at the sheet music, tabulature, learn it by ear, anything.... I want to keep it magical if that makes sense. This song nails that feeling to a "T" for me.

We know Prince insisted on the soundboard of his show, and as much as he could he had each event videoed for his analysis post-gig with the band (and for posterity too I'm sure).
So for a soundboard to leak soon after the gig itself in perfect quality - from a show that was not publicised as being the aftershow venue (as far as I am aware)... It certainly points at the leak being internal.
I agree totally. I think he wanted the world to hear it. I think he wanted some evidence of a wonderful night being out there. I think he wanted a little pat on the back for his talent.
And let's assume he did leak it... Wouldn't it be the kind of thing that fueled a lot of his desire to release above and beyond the record contract with WB... He's still peeved at having to cut down SOTT maybe... Or angry at having the Black Album recall flood the market with bootlegs anyway. Is this his way to topple The Black Album from the Number 1 Bootleg spot..?

this was in a small club in Camden, London. Throughout most of his career he would do a normal concert and then take the stage in a much more intimate venue, often only hundreds in attendence, often at 2am. Sometimes these might be better than the main concert and could go on for 3 hours. lots of celebs would often be seen at these. Yes this is from the soundboard, i own a bootleg LP of this gig. This gig is famous for cameos from Ronie Wood on guitar of the Stones (as Prince is covering 'Miss You' and a hilarious impression of Mick Jagger, and a cool moment which is not on this clip, where from the audience Prince hands the MIC to someone to sing, that person is Mica Paris (it's amazing that he knew she was in the crowd) . there is video footage of this gig out there. and it's amazing. Yeah, that one is in my Top 3 as well! For many of us, this was the definitive bootleg to have back in the late 80s (I think I first had it on cassette, now of course you can get the CD or MP4 files). I actually first heard about the set because of the improv song with lyrics made up on the spot (or so the story goes...) on the song, "People Without". But the Temptations cover was a huge surprise because he hadn't released any cover tunes on his albums at this stage, and I thought that the song choice was pretty surprising given his musical direction at the time. Here's the set list for the whole show: 1 Instrumental Jam, 2 D.M.S.R., 3 Just My Imagination, 4 People Without, 5 Housequake, 6 Down Home Blues, 7 Cold Sweat, 8 Forever In My Life, 9 Still Would Stand All Time, 10 I'll Take You There, 11 It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night, and 12 Rave to the Joy Fantastic. So happy you finally got to this one. As you said, it's about the dynamics and his ability to take you on a journey in that solo. He keeps surprising you and taking off in new directions without ever forgetting the underlying melody. He played this song at after shows a lot 1987 through 1988. I'm lucky enough to have several on bootlegs and no two are the same. Always about what he was feeling in the moment - and he'd rehearse his bands like a demon to ensure he had that freedom, wherever he went they could follow (here it is Sheila E on drums, Levi Seacer Jar on bass and Boni Boyer and Dr Fink on keys). Here's another recommendation that I haven't seen from many for you th-cam.com/video/Mvuvk4o55p4/w-d-xo.html - from the Sign O The Times concert film so it looks and sounds great, but it also has a really underrated guitar solo that is quite unlike anything else you've heard him do so far, a bit trippier. And then, I think I've recommended this one before, from that Montreux show you've seen a couple of numbers from - this one highlights his skill as a performer working the crowd, his vocal abilities and guitar (his scatting along with his solo is incredible) and his gift as an arranger as he works 4 of his own son gs into this piece. th-cam.com/video/m2CDBJtYIjQ/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for this video and your discription on what Prince does to the feel and sound,he used in this cover.
As composer, performer and musician, he was one of the best,i've ever experienced but as a human,he had too many "shady sides" and he wasn't realy open,to others opinions/ideas,so working with him,you were "slave to his music".His music and carreer were the only things, that realy matter to him,i believe.
"It's just my magination",when he had arranged this club(Paard van Troje,Den Haag) for 3 nights,in the same weekend as North Sea Jazz Festival, he would have made utlimate live recordings and video's, with the biggest musicians in soul, jazz, blues and funk,to create a platform to jam with all these names.
But i feel/know,he wouldn't be open to such ideas/suggestions .Allthough he believed in God,his ego was huge.
I know 2 people, who experienced this concert there at the Paard van Troje. One was also sidestage during this concert, his name is Felix Flohr. He works still for Hartman Crew, who were the sidecrew at the 3 concerts in de Kuip Stadium Rotterdam during the Lovesexy Tour.
He had to bring all the backline from Rotterdam to Den Haag and set it up on stage. He was a very lucky man, that night.
An other person,i spooke years ago,was visiting a friend, who lived in the street, opposit to the loadingdock of de Paard van Troje.Because it was a kind of tropical night, they were setting at the balcony, drinking wine and smoking spliffs, they heard the music ,because the doors of the loading dock were kept open(because of the hot night). This way, they enjoyed the music "at home".

    Great video. Good performance choice
Peggy McCreary, engineer at Sunset Sound said about Prince on guitar “could take any piece of shit [guitar] and make it sound good”
Forgive me if I’ve misremembered. I haven’t been able to find this quote again but someone who worked with him said that Prince’s mantra with cover versions was to “play it like you wrote it”
I think Prince was able to get so much expression from the guitar that sometimes you can actually hear the words instead. I think the second song on this showcase is a great example of being able to hear the lyrics from the playing. She’s Always in my Hair

This all happened to me going to the LOVESEXY CONCERT..
And I was only 12YRS OLD I was defo the youngest in this concert of 20/25.000 people and yes I did get a few weird looks but most I realise later was a look of respect to my sister/Brother in law for bringing me to a Prince concert.

YEA!!! Can you see him playing this in your mind? Absolutely magical 💜💜. Thank you❤️. By the way, back in the day this was one of the most sought after bootlegs. That was Sheila E on drums. GREAT REACTION 💜

Wanda Wanda Wanda, here is the answer to that question it might sound a little cheesy :) I am a fan of so much different types of music. Sometimes I'll listen and I know exactly what they are doing (what chords, what key the song is in, what scales they are using etc... ) but then there are some other songs that truly are magical, I can close my eyes, relax and it takes me away.... those songs I don't even want to know really, if I think about or see the sheet music, it's like a mechanic looking under the hood of a special vehicle... the magical songs I don't even want to know and I refuse to learn them musically. This song is in that category... some old Genesis albums namely Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering do that to me too.... Does that make sense? And hold on girl, your request is coming.... :)

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar that makes perfect sense. I have been waiting to see your reaction to that. He starts off slow and then blows your mind. So glad you enjoyed it. And I enjoyed watching you.

Flanger is one of those pedals prince uses well because he plays with feeling but also in prefect time. If you don't play in time, flanger sounds like poop. :)
