How the hell does he make an Elvis Presley song his own and take it an completely different direction and make it work effortlessly! Absolute genius! Your bang on by the way, studying him is a lifetimes work, I've been a fan for almost 38 years, still watching videos like this I've never seen before, magic!
I love the moments where you can tell he’s just letting go and completely having fun. The laughs he gives at the beginning might honestly be my favorite part of this. You can feel the joy pouring out. And god Jon Blackwell was a monster on the drums. I always felt like he should be in the conversation for greatest drummer(s) and he never gets mentioned. I’d take him over almost anyone if I was putting together a band. The band here is basically the same lineup he had for most of the 00s and they were so dialed in at this point that they could stop on a dime and follow him in any direction and be at his level. Fantastic.
This is far and away the best lineup of musicians he ever played with. I will also go so far as to say that these two shows may be the finest performances of his career. The musicianship is off the charts, he is so joyous and loose and his guitar playing is locked in like never before.
It's hard to argue with that when we have these performances to look at. I personally think his best BAND was NPG early-90s of Sonny T, Michael Bland, Tommy Barbarella. A phenomenally talented group of guys but they played like a group of friends too. For skill, I do think you're right that this lineup is the most talented. Just insane levels in every area.
Man, do I love that one-two punch of "Stratus/All Shook Up"! Thank you so much for getting to this request. Who else would genetically bind a jazz fusion song by drummer Billy Cobham with an Elvis cover? (I'll answer: NOBODY, that's who.) To see Blackwell pay homage to Cobham during the drum solo is also a cool moment. The dynamics of the going from the precision 1st solo to the emotionally-charged last solo, plus the expert crowd control and the band stopping "on-the-one" right on a dime is just too much. Awesome performance. 🔥

In watching some of your older videos of you playing, I could be tempted to describe you the same way based on how quickly your hands are moving across the guitar. So it must not be just about speed of playing, right?
This is a great question Jason I’m going to answer it next week with a video and a shout out to you 😊🎶🎸
Its all in the movement and expressions ...
Don't know if you did this video... America by Prince.... High Engery Performance and a surprise at the end
Hi Leonard! I did in fact do a reaction to that one awhile ago, it was blocked on YT and is up on my Patreon :)
At the end of the Elvis song ”All Shook Up” Prince says ”Love you Maestro”. Is he talking about Elvis or who? (I wouldn’t be surprised after hearing that Prince was the owner of a big Elvis collection!)
💜🐾
Boom. (was @ these 2 shows)
:O That is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rip prince
🔥 '" Stratus " 🔥 is the perfect name 4 this song 🎶🎼🎵🎸🥁🎹💜😎💯 cuz it definitely takes a good grip of u & take u on nice flight thru the Stratosphere & drops u off out there 4 a sec so 1 can get a good look 👁👁 at Mother Earth 🌎 & how beautiful & majestic Mother Earth 🌎 truly is without all the bullshit 💩 unessessary negativity, stress, drama & chaos that people tend 2 have & bring with themselves & whatever issues & problems that people pack in 2 there luggage 🤣😂😅💯😎🔥
Prince was also very influenced by Carlos Santanas playing.
The first time I saw Blackwell on drums was with his first big gig playing with the funk band Cameo in 96.
i think more than anyone else.
Cameo are interesting to me. When Word Up came out in 1986 I absolutely loved that song... about a year ago I did a bit of research to see more on their history, I'm going to brush up on it... :)
Check out Cameo live in Aruba in 96...Blackwell on drums and the great Aaron Mills on bass....funky.
Oh Jesus. I've been a big fan of Billy Cobham AND Prince, and had no idea the Purple One covered this classic track from Billy's classic Spectrum album. Wow!
And guess what, Prince is a better guitarist than Tommy Bolin. Which is to say, Prince is an AMAZING guitarist.
Check out straycats drink that bottle down
How about Take Me With You Live on Purple Rain Tour next? th-cam.com/video/c80mYF6dR7s/w-d-xo.html
Prince said he was influenced by Santana.
I believe it for sure, I did a reaction to his Santana medley last week, it was pretty awesome.
