The 70s was glutted with genius, the best decade for music by far: Bowie, Beatles, Stones, Who, ELP, Genesis, Yes, Simon and Garfunkel, Sabbath, Zep, Deep Purple, on and on and on it goes. There's been nothing like it since.
Can't beat the "Banana Puddin" reference!?? Another great Funky Jawn from Bowie who was so far ahead of everyone musically and artistically. David Bowie was a trend setter and a musical pioneer in Rock.
One of the songs that "caught" me as a kid with its unique sound and repeating "Fame" from high pitch to low. On his birthday in 2016 I tweeted "Is it any wonder you are to cool to fool" then two days later he passed. 🎧 💓 🎶
@@suz5862 I believe there are differing accounts to his writing contributions but yeah he certainly came up with the aim/fame bit. The whole song seemed exceptionally collaborative and born out of little additions from everyone involved. I also think that Bowie thought the song was co-conceived by Lennon in spirit as the two had been chatting a lot about fame, managers, and being independent/authentic at the time. Interesting stuff for sure.
I love to think of this playing in the clubs & everyone dancing, 50 years after it hit the airwaves when I was 10. Rest in Peace, David Bowie, thanks for the memories!
Another funky one is "Fashion". I was not a big Bowie fan. I respect him as one of the greats and his influence. But I was all soul/funk and being a great artist, Bowie tried many styles. One album produced by Nile Rogers of Chic.😎👍🏾
How did you like John Lennon's backing vocals? And yeah man, great breakdown of the lyrics for sure and I'm glad you appreciated all the cool space in that thing and how funky it was.
Mmmmm FAME. BOWIE. The guy who made smoking look cool (on his album covers) Came out when I turned 18, 1975, just graduated from high school, and first night out in a bar this played, and my first dance floor, lol. This and Young Americans. Good times.
Funky Bowie! The part with the strange descending vocal effect was supplied by John Lennon and made with tape loops. For some more "funky" Bowie, check out "Golden Years", "Young Americans", "Sound and Vision", and "1984", studio versions preferably as his live performances during that time lagged due to his drug abuse. David Bowie predates Rick James by a decade. James released his first album in 1978. That's the album with "You and I" and "Mary Jane". James was in a band with Neil Young that was signed to Motown in the late sixties, believe it or not, but the whole thing fell apart when the truth came out that James was awol from the Navy.
Love this song! I tried to talk my daughter's marching band director into learning this. I was going to invent the additional sound making devices to make it work
I was about 15 when this came out. As a kid, I worked heavy part time and loved music. I spent almost all my cash on records, concerts, and dating-combining them when possible. My record collection grew every month for years. What I am getting at is… I could suggest many albums if you missed the 2nd half of the 70s and wanted to catch up (as if, with YT). However, if you really wanted to relive those 4-5 years from 1973ish to 1976ish thoroughly by buying only one album, I would tell you to get ChangesOne, by Bowie that was kind of a greatest hits. So many styles and hits! I think it came out around 1976. I still listen to it often.
Bowie made an album "Blackstar" as he was dying from liver cancer in which he takes his experience head on and turns it into music. This guy was an artist with a capital "A"!. Truth be told, I have only slightly listened to that album, as death as a subject really can make you back up! However, I am going to re-listen to that album and see exactly how it hits.
The genius of Bowie was always getting the right musicians for whatever genre he was going after, and not being able to take risks. He could have continued pumping out Ziggy type albums, but thank god he didn’t. Try right from the Young Americans album
Ice Cube put this in next Friday when Pinky pulls up. Easy on the turns babe, make my spill dis here yak all over this $200 suite. C’mon get ur shit together
Fun Fact: This song is used to key-in sound systems, mic placements in studios... If you ever upgrade the sound system in your car, play this song while adjusting (my suggestion is scoop em) the EQ.... Let me know when you wake up....

He's just from a different planet and he went back home. ❤👽
so true
He performed Fame and Golden Years on Soul Train back in ‘75; great show!
I remember that!
Bowie was a style chameleon. He loved music and dipped his toes in any number of genres. Phenomenal musician, actor and artist.
I love this funky music from David Bowie. I also hear John Lennon singing. 🎶🎶🎶👍

@@Frankincensedjb123 GREAT decade for film, too! 🙃
How awesome we had it!
Bowie was a genius. Love all his work.

That one got me too! Also, the Rick James comparison is fair-- I can totally hear it.
@@woodch Yeah young Rick in the late 1970's had the same funky vibe for sure.
David Bowie and John Lennon went to an Ohio Players concert. They went to the studio and recorded Fame. It was their Funk statement.
One of the songs that "caught" me as a kid with its unique sound and repeating "Fame" from high pitch to low.
On his birthday in 2016 I tweeted "Is it any wonder you are to cool to fool" then two days later he passed.
🎧 💓 🎶
John Lennon was background vocalists on this track
Also he co-wrote and played guitar on it too.
@@TheGroucho66 also Carlos Alomar gets a co-writing credit on the track as well.
I did not know that!
@@TheGroucho66 Lennon’s writing contribution was limited. He got a credit for coming up with the word “aim” which Bowie change to “fame”.

The mystery sound is a percussion instrument called a "vibra-slap"...
Bowie can bring the funk.
Where the hell did they come up with this syncopated funk arrangement It's crazy!!?
You said “ok David I didn’t know you had it in you”. David had everything inside and was talented enough for all of us to see and hear.
We weren't behind the door in the 1970s as teenagers. We knew what we liked. I'm 65 now, but still 16.
Me too!
I love to think of this playing in the clubs & everyone dancing, 50 years after it hit the airwaves when I was 10. Rest in Peace, David Bowie, thanks for the memories!
This caught Bowie fans by surprise when it appeared. Loved your reaction. The 'buzz' sound is a percussion instrument.
Another funky one is "Fashion".

One of my favourite musicians ! 🥰🥰 You have to listen to much more of his songs to understand his genious...
Bowie loved Motown
How did you like John Lennon's backing vocals? And yeah man, great breakdown of the lyrics for sure and I'm glad you appreciated all the cool space in that thing and how funky it was.
Check out Bowie's song Golden Years for another nice groove.
Dear lord I love David Bowie
David Bowie knew ever musical genre.
Definitely hear the James similarity (never thought of that before!) James had a hit in Europe in 74, but didn't hit it big until late 70's in US
As for the "Young Americans" Album, many of the songs were co-written and performed with a young Luther Vandross.
Mmmmm FAME. BOWIE. The guy who made smoking look cool (on his album covers) Came out when I turned 18, 1975, just graduated from high school, and first night out in a bar this played, and my first dance floor, lol. This and Young Americans. Good times.
what a fun memory, much love from Brazil!

Bowie's funky era is my favorite.
"Young American" is my #1 all-time fav... need to hear and thank me later! ❤
James Brown used this riff and rhythm later that year (1975) on the song Hot (I Need To Be Loved). Maybe Rick James covered that song🤷♂
Love this song! I tried to talk my daughter's marching band director into learning this. I was going to invent the additional sound making devices to make it work
Fame was remastered in 1990 for the movie Pretty Woman

A Ren cover of this would be insane.... The original sounds good decades too.

My Posse's on Broadway! --Sir Mix-a-lot
keep on rocking. bro hey...it is reversed music.
That's John Lennon (The Beatles) singing the high-pitched FAME.
So much sauce
I put this on my "Trumpist" playlist with a bunch of other songs that remind me of Trump. And protest songs.
David Bowie 1975 'Fame' Young Americans album. Rick James 1978.
You gotta listen to Rebel Rebel by the Bowie! I like the original vs this remaster
bowie doesn't fit a genre - He is one all by himself

Bowie was one of the wealthiest musicians. I never really liked more than a few songs, it seemed like a huge disconnect.
This is when he sold out to disco. A lot of this album is good though.
Sold out? Absurd. Paying homage to his love of R&B/Soul. And this is funk, not disco (the latter being a derivative of the former).
@@rockandrollpaddy It's disco dude. Many rockers tried riding that wave. Even the Stones, Bee Gee's. haha!
