- Matty Benedetto is the creator behind @UnnecessaryInventions who has amassed millions of followers across just about every social media network. These inventions are what Matty describes as unique solves to first world problems, and they range from a pair of glasses with built-in sponges that soak up tears to a funnel that catches falling ingredients from a burrito and neatly sorts it into a taco below. It’s these unique solves that have kept folks returning again and again to Matty’s video content for that last five years. In this first episode of my new video series, Full Frame: Creators, that profiles internet creators I spend a whole day with Matty to figure out how he makes his inventions and how he makes a living from posting about them. #Creator #Inventions

Burrito collector that creates another burrito, at what point are you just eating tortilla?
I'd suggest a mobile burrito collector, which is like a babies bib, but has a burrito at the bottom.
The Jewel cooler, and the follow-up with the knock-off versions.

Matty is a genius. He's a "stop what you're doing and watch" creator for sure.
Didn't expect him to show up in The Verge! I always noticed his videos of making unnecessary and stupid (but fun!) stuffs, and I pretty much liked his whole personality as a creator. Also, I liked how he also tends to listen to his audience, so when several people were complaining or give comments about the unnecessary inventions, he'd sometimes 'fixes it and made it even more unnecessary! Hahaha such a fun thing to witness

Loved it! I hope you can ask super granular questions, not just like "how did you start?". A lot of general creator content can be found online, but to geek out or ask about very very specific stuff would be really useful and fresh, even if I don't understand it on the moment.

I think the content is there but I’d love more of a conversation between Becca and the creator and less VO. The VO drives the story but it would be neat if Becca drove the story with dialogue especially since creators and the verge team have commonality in creating content. I think an awesome person to have next in the series is Peter McKinnon! Keep up the great work!

I would love to know your camera and lighting setup. AKA, I would love you to profile yourself next. I can tell you use a wide angle lens but would love to know your process as I always feellike the verge and all it's creators nail the cross section of being professional journalists, but are also personable and relatable.
Do you write a script? Do you improvise everything? A combo...etc...

Creators thrive in the challenges of generating unique content within the constraints of being an individual with low production value. It also makes them seen more authentic and genuine compared to faceless companies. As they succeed, they invariably seek stability and ultimately become the very tightly structured corporate entity they turned to social media to get away from.
