I really enjoyed getting to see and hear the creator of these videos. The content is very well prepared and presented. And Barcelona is a beautiful city!!
When my parents lived in London, transport for London (TFL) started introducing articulating buses. However, they where discontinued due to the face they kept knocking people off the pavement, because the city corner's are too tight. Great video btw 👏
I love the dual narrator scheme in this vid; it’s a great juxtaposition of omniscient narrator vs. guy on the ground narrating his transit experience Also, train good, car bad
Un magnífic video explicant la xarxa d'autobusos de Barcelona. Jo sóc usuària de la xarxa d'autobusos i és molt útil, fàcil i et pots desplaçar sense problemes per la Ciutat.
The H16 you show was the first totally electric bus in Barcelona, and I can proudly say that it goes through the neighborhood where I grew up. And we did not even have a metro in that area for decades, so we had to rely largely on buses.
When I lived in Denver they had a very similar system because the city was laid out on a very strict grid system, it worked well. They also had a big difference between day and night, during the day you could get just about anywhere on a bus, and then at night, you were just out of luck because if you wanted to stay out past 11 there were no busses.
I live in Barcelona and praying everyday that they expand the tram network. Buses are neat, but a many of the bus lines could be changed to tram and increase the capacity enormously. And trams are way cheaper to maintain than buses and do not need recharging, so the initial investment might be paid long term. Anyhow, I suspect that the opposition that the citizens have against expanding the tram is partly because the terrible propaganda against them in the late 60s by the last fascist mayor of the city.
Many thanks for this - it's inspired me to pal to visit Barcelona as and when that's possible... You are right about the attention to detail when it comes to interchanges - something that many bus operators just don't seem to have a clue about! Getting from anywhere to anywhere with just one change is brilliant - the only way I can think to improve that is to cut down travel time by basing the grid on equilateral triangles - but that would involve starting with a city with triangular blocks!
This is an excellent video. I am glad you are not completely removing yourself with the English speaking voice-over guy, but instead mix it up. Well done!
The public transport in Barcelona is without a doubt one of the best in the world as it should be in order to cope with the tens of millions of tourists that visit the city each year. It does't even hickup and takes them on like a champ. On the opposite side of the public transport's quality is the total indiscipline of moto, bycle and electric scooter users who are not aware of anything around them but only go forward. We can see this in the video in several scenes. Perhaps the victory over the bus wasn't possible without the casual crossing on red lights. This can leave room for a rematch video to see who wins fairly. :)
Ahhh the 127 route, I use this line to go to my college. Also, this line was splitted, doing two services, one going through Rodrigo Cano street and the other going through Artesania street Thank you for visiting my city! ^^/
Ben Lawrence, those Mercedes Benz bendy buses were also known for the connection between the two parts of the vehicle, that the hoses for power steering, wore away, and ended up in flames. First Group depot, near the city centre of Man chester, did alterations to those buses to fix them, but a couple of years later, they were sold to make way for double deck buses.
Hello from Moscow! Can you make a video about old Barcelona tram and trolleybus network? As I know there were also trolleybuses in Barcelona, but all trams and trolleybuses were removed from city streets in 1960-70.
The main reason the tram network was replaced by buses was because they wanted to emphazise the use of the automobile and manufacture state-build buses during the dictatorship. That's why most lines had the exact same route as the tram. The only original remaining route is the "Tranvia blau", that is now closed bc of improvements to the line (hopefully not for long)
With the decrease in commuting trips grid systems will be the only reasonable way to go forward. Or radial with lots tangents depending on how the city was built.
Mainly all around Europe there is no difference between downtown and financial district, It is usual to find layers, apartments, shop, doctor office and restaurants in one single building
I think “moto” will be the fastest option here in Barcelona unless it’s really short distance. And it will be much more likely to still be there when you return to continue your journey (as opposed to a bicycle that will have have lost a saddle or wheel).
During the civil war, Barcelona was under the control of the Anarchist faction who took over running city services. According to people living there at the time, the public transportation system was run perfectly well by the anarchists
Amazing video as always and thanks for that. I was wondering though - why didn’t you test out commuting through the grid instead of a straight line? This way you can only actually compare the operating speed of the vehicles in question and not the efficiency ot the entire bus system. I believe the bus would win over the car if you went for a diagonal cross-city trip? 🤷♂️
None of the diagonal buses are faster than the horizontal bus I used (it was the fastest on the system actually). Adding transfers would have only worsened the situation.
Ridiculous interval of 35 minutes is actually not bad for a city of 1.5M. It's quite a small upper bound compared to something like >60 minute interval or even fixed time departure.
Yes, I hire a voiceover actor. Accent coach for me + acting classes + proper recording studio seem too much of an investment for now, I decided to focus on scripting.
@@RailwaysoftheWorld1 first of all, thank you for the quick reply! The scripting is simply perfect! The accent can be solved by just talking everyday. Keep up the good work!
I have tendency to prefer old Soviet system, but with condition that city is planned with Tram space planned ahead of building planning as USSR did. Soviet's had whole middle lane dedicated towards only for public transport system Tram at that time, and such planing would free up valuable space for general public and make them feel more free. Most current city space is so cramped with idea that any valuable space should be occupied, which if you think oxymoron metality.
@@Mr._E They adapt the routes (often once a year) according to where the passengers are. I’m not arguing for one or the other, I hate any type of public transport, and go by car or motorcycle in combination with walking.
@@Tom-sg4iv As a lover of, and frequent rider of public transit, I can tell you without a doubt that trams/trolleys/streetcars/LRVs are far superior to busses. Rail transit signifies an investment in an area's infrastructure. Busses are a emission spewing quick-fix. Plus, there is a significant difference in the level of comfort between the two.

It can be surely better than other places and cities, but it’s far from being the perfect city.
The way this channel slips in stuff like “trying to appease the god of trams” in the same tone as the rest is excellent

Amusing how you mention the 59 at 7:06 as that's my local bus number, however it's also most frequent in my city.
