"This tram would be the perfect public transportation choice for a colony on mars" Well, there are a lot of town in russia that are so remote, they may as well be on mars, so fair enough
They did launch Mars probes before the USSR collapsed, so there could very well be chances in some other timeline that USSR didn't collapsed, they got a KTM-5 running on Mars today within their Mars colony.
Not to mention that tram can handle massive swings in weather temperature from Siberian cold snaps to Siberian heat waves (they can get pretty hot and sticky in the summer)
As 'mars' is only a delusional fiction, i would say the trams ( which are REAL and not imaginary ) will do a lot better with some logical and much needed rail maintainance here on ACTUAL earth.
I remember those things. Big rusty and noisy. With chain-pulled guillotine doors. Whenever people got smashed by those - they could not restore their breath before riding through 2-3 tram stations. Also as a kid I loved that the door were operated by relays (often exposed into passenger compartment). Since they usually were bodge-repaired they emitted different colors sparks: yellow, green, red, white, depending on the contactor materials bodged into those. 90s were miserable times... But as kids we've seen nuggets of beauty in ugly things.
The ingenuity of people is amazing. They will never die as long as people refuse to let them die. Congratulations to all the people who have toiled to keep them going all these years.
But as pointed out modern trams get written off, because the electronic circuit boards, cannot be repaired or replaced. Old mechanical based systems can be repaired.
I failed to found any Georgian music that was not copyrighted on TH-cam, and that's when Rodoljub „Roki” Vulović, who sings almost the same, but is not greedy for money, helped me out 😀
Oh, I remember one of the KTM-5 was serving in Moscow, near Tulskaya street. I think it was in 2008-2009. And, if you search for pictures of more modern Russian tram cars, you will find out, that the KTM-5's legendary emergency brake design is implemented in nearly all trams, produced after 70's.
The video brought back happy memories of living in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, 25 years ago. The KTM-5s epitomise so much of what I loved about Russia then. A few of the routes in Krasnoyarsk still survive, and with roads often now at a standstill thanks to private car ownership of a level which the Soviet town planners could never have imagined, the trams have gone from being the slowest to the fastest means of transport! May they live on long.
As someone living in Nab. Chelny, I can assure you it's not so bad now. Also our tramway was lengthened and there are plans of making it even more longer. Loved your video, tho ;)
A big thank you for this video! I was glad to see even my city in this video. The city of Perm. That Romantic Tram Cafe is very popular, people have to book places for days before their ride. The city has enough money to buy new trams and replace these old KTMs, but those ones wich still work is on very good and strong condition and do their work very well.
I wish you good luck in promoting your content, the videos are very interesting! With love from Russia, the Republic of Bashkortostan, the city of Ufa. P.S. In our city, KTM-5 was also used before, but in 2009, after the division of the tram system into the southern and northern ones, due to poor road policy (something like the big automobile American dream), many cars were written off, including KTM-5, RVZ-6M2. Now in the northern depot, Tatra T-3s are mostly operated, and in the southern KTM-8 (now there are about 65 of them) with several modern cars. Now in the city there is a question about the unification of lines, but it is not clear how this will happen, since the transport company has gone bankrupt and has been suffering losses for 5 years. In addition, the oil is added to the fire by the drivers of cars that oppose the tram. We really hope that everything will be fine with the tram. P. P. S If you want, I can write in more detail about our tram system as well as a little about KTM-8. P. P. P. Great video! It would be interesting for me as a Czech if you'd make a video about the Tatra T3 trams in former USSR. In the Czech Republic, T3s are knows as reliable and sturdy machines heck the capital city of Prague still has over 400 units, so it would be interesting to know how those over 11 000 trams worked in Russia.
9:15 Were they really such a breakthrough? Japan is full of those. In fact, the remaining four 161-series units in Osaka and Sakai are not only single-carriage double-ended cars, but, with them currently doing their 93rd year of service, are the oldest tramcars in regular service. To put it into perspective, these trams were already 35 years old when KTM-5's started production. And they're still in almost mint condition. Most pre WW2 trams were single-car double-ended models.
2-sided cabin tram-cars were never very common in Russia 'coz almost every city with trams had (and has) place for tram turnarounds. Probably the most common 2-sided trams are in Saint-Petersburg
In claiming that the KTM 5 is the most numerous tram class in the world, one should bear in mind that the Tatra T4 was identical to the Tatra T3, except that it was a narrower version for certain cities (2.2 rather than 2.5 metres wide). Only for this reason did it have a different class number. The combined total of T3/T4 trams produced was 16,748 including 122 unpowered trailers. It's a pedantic point of course and both the Russian and the Czech tram hold an honorable place at the top of the world statistics board.
In Perm we have around 100 trams still running, КТМ is one of them, tram sistem in my city is almoust 100 years old. I also dreamed of becoming a tram driver in my childhood😅
I want to make a video about railways of Serbia in the next year. For now I don't know much about the subject and have absolutely no idea about the contents of the video, but I definitely know what will be the soundtrack 😀
And KTM 5 has now united multilingual peoples. Really, the tram is a hero! 8-)
Thank you for the video! It’s very interesting to learn about the tram and all the various cities in the Russia and other countries which use it. If you get a chance, you should check out the history of the interurban trolleys that would run for many miles at high speeds (even up to 140 kph!) between cities in America during the early 1900’s. There are only a couple of them left.
Wonderful story and pictures, both episodes, I learned a lot. I only took a KTM5 once while I was in Biysk, Siberia. It is true, they are mostly found in remote provincial towns. In Barnaul I didn't see any, they seem to prefer CKD T3SU and T6B5SU.
People who work in public transit tend to be some of the most dedicated people, comparable to medical workers, because they know that what they're doing is vital to society even if no one appreciates it and as such they work incredibly hard to keep things running. In Denmark DSB has been keeping the now over 30 year old IC3s running and up to date to the point where foreigners are shocked at how comfortable these regular commuter trains are, having levels of comfort that sometimes exceed high speed rail in other countries.
the person in the first vid who said every country should have a babushka driving a KTM5.. captured the essence of the teams and drivers perfectly.. our PATH trains and the hudson / Bergen light rail trains call me to mind when i'm watching the KTM5's 🤗😊😀👍
Ironically enough, famous in Russia (especially in Moscow), as well as in other countries of Eastern Europe, the Czech Tatra-3 trams were slightly modified licensed American PCC trams (built by St. Louis Car Company and Pullman Standard since the early 30s until the early 50s of the last century). Modified licensed PCC trams were also built in Spain, Italy and Belgium.
This mode of transportations - tram - may come back when fuel cost will restrain transport in many nations by 2040's; and it will make inroads again partially and succesfully in some areas of the many nations. Oil will be depleted but before that there will be reliable transort or connection issues and this will make come back, besides trolleybus.
Well In Prague, where I live, trams are still (along with metro) the backbone of public transport...And of whole transport...without them, so many people would need to use car and traffic in Prague would probably fail. But Its true Prague has 3. biggest tram network, so idk how it works somewhere else.
What do you mean the KTM-5 is not cute? Yes it is! Are you blind? Like Thomas the Tank Engine's Soviet Cousin who never calls!🥰🥰🥰. You could make a whole Russian kids animated show about a reliable, old KTM-5 that's been in service since the good ol' oppressive days!
"Marshrutka mafia"...
Watching this video, I've asked my GF to take me to a tram ride today in Minsk. My curiosity in tram ignited when I saw them for the first time in Moscow 3.5 years ago. We don't have trams in India anymore and I'm very excited to travel one today. :)
Great story, well told. I had seen film of the KTM-5 cars operating in many cities, but did not know their history. I have even more respect for these robust vehicles, the citizens who travel daily on them, and the people who maintain them and keep them going.
Hi! Awesome series, loved it! Maybe you can peek and check the story of Bucharest's V3A - developed in the '70s and still running (with several modernized iterations) strong in Bucharest even today! Lots of luck with the channel!
Check out the partly restored tram system in Christchurch NZ. The route through the CBD was badly damaged in the 2nd great earthquake of Feb 22nd 2011 but is now fully back in service...and still charging tourist prices..
A great video, very interesting and informative. It's great to learn about this venerable and even noble tram, dutifully serving the commuting public. Thank you for producing and sharing it.
You should make a video about T3 made in czechoslovakia. 14000 vehicles made total, and exported through entire eastern block. Iconic in Prague, robust and reliable. They were called Dubček´s vengeance, which was czech communst leader, because they were damaging railways in germany and hungary. Their tram system was not designed for these but for much lighter, it started with horse pulled carts.
Your lecture sounds like native English language, but the content, jokes, sarcastic inlets suggest that you could have lived in one of the countries from the other side of the fence... Really interesting :)
I did actually ride these in Moscow when I was a kid in the beginning of this century... Good memories. Had to really convince my grandma to ride one because our route would be well enough covered by metro :D
Amazing video! I think that a good topic could be why Sydney's Trains are ALL double decker. One of their benefits is that it's extremely hard to graffiti a whole carriage, and it has only been done ONCE. You can see footage of it at the end of a graffiti film called "Stayout Sydney"

I can't imagine how beautiful can be Russia with such amazing people live there without their corrupt government.

40 minutes headway’s. Fail. “Red boxes”. Hahah. That’s what they are. These videos are fascinating
A wonderful example of our love for the things we enjoy instinctively. Thanks a lot!
"Peaceful red tram" Aww, how cute!
Loved hearing hej hej kikore in the background. Roki is the best!
I want to make a video about railways of Serbia in the next year. For now I don't know much about the subject and have absolutely no idea about the contents of the video, but I definitely know what will be the soundtrack 😀
What a delightful video!......a fascinating and amazing country,!
Another wonderful and informative video.
Barnaul (and also Novokuznetsk) are the easternmost cities with Tatra T3!
Thank You! Very positive film. Wish You happy holidays to!
Really appreciate the respectful way the story being told. God job, comrade!
This mindset is shared by many Americans with our old cars. They run forever and we can fix them easy!
Wow.. built tough. Also you gotta love switching tracks with a crowbar.
I never knew these existed before your videos. And i like these are even simpler than T3.
I am now emotional invested in these trams
Thanks for this second episode. ☺️👍🏼
Watching this video, I've asked my GF to take me to a tram ride today in Minsk. My curiosity in tram ignited when I saw them for the first time in Moscow 3.5 years ago. We don't have trams in India anymore and I'm very excited to travel one today. :)
I feel a deep nostalgia after watching this, even if I don’t live in Russia and, of course, I didn’t ride any of these trams.
Fantastic!!! Happy New Year to you.
Great! Thank you for this video. Must see it, must visit it. Greetings from Belgrade and Budapest! :)
Hearing the Serbian music pop up in the background gave me a damn PTSD moment, that being said...interesting choice and great video my friend
Awesome documentaries about these wonderful machines, thank you :)
Great story, well told. I had seen film of the KTM-5 cars operating in many cities, but did not know their history. I have even more respect for these robust vehicles, the citizens who travel daily on them, and the people who maintain them and keep them going.
Great videos and now I know about the story of the people's tram, the KTM5.
I hope you & yours are well & happy!
💜☮️
Dear Railways of the World, Great video!!! Congratulations!!! I also would like to suggest a subject: The Melbourne Tramway Network
Hi!
Awesome series, loved it!
Maybe you can peek and check the story of Bucharest's V3A - developed in the '70s and still running (with several modernized iterations) strong in Bucharest even today!
Lots of luck with the channel!
Thank you!
I was already looking at Romania (mostly thanks to Ikarus 280), now it attracts me even more.
Check out the partly restored tram system in Christchurch NZ. The route through the CBD was badly damaged in the 2nd great earthquake of Feb 22nd 2011 but is now fully back in service...and still charging tourist prices..
T3s are still very reliabely serving in Prague! The best tram ever
A great video, very interesting and informative. It's great to learn about this venerable and even noble tram, dutifully serving the commuting public. Thank you for producing and sharing it.
Lovely video. Thank you for sharing
Czechoslovak Tatra T3 trams are also almost indestructible and still in wide use although their design is 60 years old.
I have fallen in love with KTM-5..
You just have an excellent channel, it's a pity I didn't come across it earlier, please make a video about the most massive trolleybus ZIU-9/682
This is beautifully upbeat and makes me love the KTM-5. Thank you.
I've had the pleasure of riding several of them.
I love historical documentaries about old Soviet engineering marvels. ❤ 😀
I am just a Russian who hired an American to do voiceovers 😜
@@RailwaysoftheWorld1 this explains everything. Cheers from Poland!
I did actually ride these in Moscow when I was a kid in the beginning of this century... Good memories. Had to really convince my grandma to ride one because our route would be well enough covered by metro :D
wow , amazing overview !!!
Now I am looking foward episode of Tatra T3 and 810 train!
11:11 is what you need to hear! thank you friend
Beautiful video. We too miss our old trains.
Speaker’s voice is like from old good TV! If IELTS listening speakers had the same voice… dreams-dreams
Amazing video! I think that a good topic could be why Sydney's Trains are ALL double decker.
One of their benefits is that it's extremely hard to graffiti a whole carriage, and it has only been done ONCE. You can see footage of it at the end of a graffiti film called "Stayout Sydney"
Lol, thx a lot for mentioning my city
