Just last week got my 15V Shaman. Stropped scary sharp on factory edge. This knife has no right to be this slicey with that thick stock. Greetings from Germany and cheers, Erica! 🍻
Very cool topic here today, I appreciate your honest opinions based on your personal experiences. 😊I think you made a lot of valid points, well said. 👍Thanks for sharing, take care and Cheers!
K390 is amazing. Edge retention for days. Down here in Kaneohe it can rust kinda fast so I just give it a little more love and care it serves me just fine🤙🏼
I like a super wide variety but typically its steels under 4% vanadium with under 14% total carbide volume. Rex-45 and cruwear for folders and honestly I would be happy if the only steel I ever had was properly heat treated (61-62 HRC) Aebl/14c28n/nitrov.
Thanks for this -it looks like S45 is the way forward for me. Here in UK you cant carry fixed blade folders (draconian knife laws) so they are only good for tasks around the house, garage and back yard. However, I have family in continental Europe which doesnt have such restrictive laws and they own a farm so I need an EDC for there. I also go hiking around that area. I think S45 is a good way to go. As much as Rex and Maxamet look crazy fun, I think in terms of corrosion, chipping and difficulty of sharpening they are losing out to S45. Cheaper doesnt mean worse :) I heard an un-intentionally hilarious comment by a German about Maxamet on a forum. He said "I shouldn't have bothered with maxamet. I'm always experimentally poking so I should have known my tip would be in danger" -sorry it's probably my sense of humor 🤣 I was wondering about something you might find interesting: Over in Europe I cleaned up some rusty tools (not knives but like a *really* old hand saw and a few farm tools). I polished the saw with high grit silicum carbide paper. To see what would happen I went through the grits up to 2000 and then polished it with flitz. Anyhow, it was a fairly quick job, so it ended up not mirror polished -but decently close. The net result was that it seems to have become pretty well rustproof. On top of that it cuts better -probably due to reduced drag. I was wondering... with K390 and the likes of maxamet... what if you mirror polished the heck out of the blade area *inside* the handle. Being that that is where it might start rusting and you might not be able to notice it. Could that be a good preventative measure? And would silicum carbide paper actual be *able* to polish such hard steels?
I think you'd like the ukpk. It's a non locking knife like the native but no lock so abides with the law but the choil males it not go down on your finger so your thumb acts as the lock but is still a very nice pen knife. Ukpk is a solid folder that doesn't have a lock.
I’ve had other knives in M4, but I recently got an M4 Delica. Id remembered that i liked the wear on your coated Delica, so i went with it. This M4 is killing M4 I’ve had before snd is among the sliciest knives I own.
I am EXTREMELY butt-hurt that you didn't talk about 440c! My 440c Schatt & Morgans are glorious and deserve more recognition! That beer looks delicious! My 'House Marg' is a pinch of salt, squeeze of lime juice & a shot of Cuervo dumped into my Budweiser 🤣🤣 I've always been a very classy guy 🤷♂ Awesome knives & video, E!! ❤
IMO 440C is very dependent on the maker. With a good heat- treatment, it's a perfectly acceptable mid-range stainless steel. With a bad heat-treat, it's garbage.
I’ve been really enjoying SPY27 and cts-xhp recently. Balanced steels that are easy to maintain just make too much sense as far as what to throw in my pocket when I’m not sure what I’ll be doing that day. Even if I end up really pushing the knife at some point, they’re so easy (and so enjoyable) to touch up it’s not an issue.
Another long day here but I got home and had a craft beer called stone fruit. Basically peach mango and plum. Very tasty. Enjoy that and enjoyed your video even more. You rock.
@ericasedc I just could go with a dif color frn scale on the native. I like the yellow non threatening and easy to see when dropped it's also the salt version so that's why. But the maxamet and cruwear went up in price. And I wanted a 15 v shamen but that was almost 300 bucks. So no thanks lol 😆 I'm good with my last knives but I do want a Smock in m4 or Gayle Bradley in k390. I got the stretch 2 lightweight but I kinda like the blade shape on the og stretch. 🤔 they had a cruwear version of the stretch for 250 instead of k390 but I saw the k390 get better reviews. But my spidercos went from 0 to I think 🤔 I got 8 of them now lol.. I even got some 8cr13mov steel ones before I became a steel nerd 🤓 😆
have you worked with zdp at all? i know it's hard to sharpen but you have max on the list so i figure i would ask...i adore that finish on the rex45 you have...
To me, M390 is just kinda boring. It holds up OK, but I do not think it lives up to the hype. Just now getting around to sharpening magnacut. My experience is it sure cleans up nice, even pine resin wipes off, so great camp knife. You told us how S45vn can perform with a toothy edge and I have been leaving it rough and enjoying that performance. I found S45vn makes a great kitchen steel.
Love me some 01 n 1095 but rex 45 and m390 from spyderco are soo good...I have a wharny delica in k390 in the mail.. next day the MAgnacut native 5 lw came out might pick up one of those too. Between your testing nd Neeves sharpening my game has stepped right up my knives are look at them cut you sharp haha so thanks guys.
The knives I use most have Elmax, LC200N, 154CM, M4, S35VN, S90V and 20CV blade steel. My favorite to sharpen is Elmax. Then LC200N, 154CM, and S35VN are all about equal. Then comes M4. And last are S90V and 20CV. Just my untrained observations.
You’ve got a nice collection of knives. I would like to ask a question if you don’t mind. When I apply a compound to a strop. Is that strop only good with that compound? Can I reapply a different compound or use a different strop for different compounds? Thanks I’m learning slowly.
I've got a Spyderco Delica in ZDP-189 and I really like it. Good edge retention and toughness, if a little harder to sharpen. I think it's gets unfairly overshadowed by the newer "super steels". I think they made an Endura in the same steel.
Genuine question (not Butt hurt). I know you love your sodbuster jr. Just curious if GEC steel is better in general why not carry one of those instead or put differently, what is case excelling at in the sodbuster jr that isn’t matched in GEC knives (or other traditional manufacturers).
@@ericasedc fair play. Case in point (no pun intended), I don’t have a GEC because I can’t just order it from Amazon like I can with Case knives. I’m annoyed by the GEC dance you have to do to get one of those but perhaps some day I’ll care enough to bust out a jig and get me one.
D2 is the best EDC steel for me. I have a big collection of EDC blades, s30v, s35vn, m390, s90v and others. And I do use my blades a lot, because I run a flower shop with my wife. And by now my favourite EDC blade is one of my cheapest, the Petrified Fish pf818 in D2 (a very effective design)... Why D2 ? Because it's cheap, holds an edge really well and it's easy to fix. And I'm not afraid to lose it or brake it. To me the EDC knife culture went in two different groups. First group are knives that are meant to be actually used every day. And the second group is the expensive jewellery fancy steel knives that people are afraid to use, and have them just as quality machined mechanism, more like a toy. I never saw hard working men (construction or other job) using a 200$+ knife... And if you look at knives under 70$ (a working knife should not cost more) D2 is king in that range.
I got my endela in zdp189. Stretch 2 in k390, sharpened i love mt tenacious we got the same one 😆 but i got an m4 delica 8cr13mov resilience and tenacious. I want your s45vn one 🤣 🤣 🔥
I have only used S35vn, S30v, 1085, 1095, D2, 440...so far I have found the 1095 on my Ka Bar BK2 by far the best steel I have used. Keeps a very sharp edge with a indestructible edge retention. I truly believe there is no need for all these "super steels" in a pocket knife. I think a lot of it is gimmick to jack up prices. Just my opinion. 1095 will do everything just as good.
For fixed blades, yeah 1095 is fantastic. Ka bar did an especially good job with the way they run their 1095 Cro van. But for pocket knives I think it is just average. I think the Glock knife in spring steel is better than k bar. As far as pocket knife.. It's a whole different ball game. K390 for the win! Or a Benchmade 970 in s30v for fun.
1095 has low edge retention. most budget stainless steels can outlast 1095 in edge retention. 1095 will also rust if you look at it wrong here in the south. 1095 is fine for fixed blades but it makes almost no sense for a folding knife.
