Just have to say, I laughed out loud at 1:45. My son is 11 years old and a passionate Mario fan. He recently discovered that there were separate cartridges for these games and bought me Duck Hunt with his own allowance money. After it arrived, he wanted to buy Mario Bros for me as well but I insisted we split it 50/50. I showed him this video and he got a huge smile on his face when you made that joke. He said "I guess we're weirdos too, huh?"

I was a SEGA kid in the 90th and still love the Sonic franchise, but Super Mario games are just another level. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 3D World are two of my favorite video games of all time.

  • @Jarod_Schultz

Super Mario always reminds me of my Grandmothers house. She had Nintendo back in the early 90's, and I played it as a kid. I want to collect all 5 variants of the game. Many people may not know there are 5 variants. There are 5 screw and 3 screw versions. There are also 3 multicarts. The most famous one is the Mario/Duck Hunt cart. There is also another one that adds World Class Track Meet, and a Pal cart that includes Mario/Tetris/World Cup.

Love your content bud. As for the Nintendo A Team on another IP, before they even consider a 3rd party game, I want them to make a full 3D Donkey Kong, because as much as I do like DK64, DK needs another attempt at a full 3D platformer.

My favorite 2D Mario Game at the time of this video was The NEW Super Mario Bros Game on the DS. U had Kaiju Mario! I'm glade Super Mario Land 3D got an honorable mention as that is my favorite 3D Mario Game. However nothing can take away 1986 when you saw Mario just keep on running! Arcade Games at the time hardly did that as everything was played on a stationary screen. So 4 that reason alone the original Super Mario Bros game on the NES is awesome & no one even cared Luigi was not in it. It should have just been called, Super Mario!

My favorite is actually Super Mario Bros 2 (USA). My problem with SMB3 & World is that you could cheese a lot of levels with flight or Yoshi. I really liked how you could play SMB2 with four different styles of play. If I could have Nintendo's A-Team work on another franchise, it'd have to be Kid Icarus. I loved the original NES title as a kid and really enjoyed Uprising on the 3DS.

What makes it World for me is that the design and gameplay is perfectly in tune with the SNES's more dynamic (and comfortable) controller compared to the NES trilogy. They ALL have my attention though, any time. And to put the A-Team to work (and to put a fork in Doki Doki Panic, haha), I'd love to see a 2.5 Klonoa style remake of Mario 2/USA.

  • @mega77

I'm the one that's going to give some love to Mario Sunshine. It just expanded Mario 64 on everyway imo. Some criticize Jet but I felt it gave great abilities to Mario. I also liked cleaning the mess, I'm not a maniac but it feels satisfying to me. And the technical jump between Mario 64 and Sunshine omg. I remember seeing the game and being amazed by the water visuals and physics, it was crazy. The game is also quite difficult, I would even say one of the toughest if not the toughest Mario Game to complete.
But if I had to highlight one thing about this game it would be its MoOd. The visuals, setting, story and ambiance are just a step above Mario 64. Delphino Island feels very tangible, you can see the locations and zones you will visit on the distance, you can see the sunshine light coming back on the island as you collect more and more shines. Some environments are just super cool like the hunted hotel, the Nori Waterfalls or the theme park. You also had the ability to ride Yoshi for the first time in 3D, feeding him with fruits and giving even more abilities to Mario. For sure this Mario Game feels very unique, more "grounded" in a way. That's why I love this entry in the serie.

I know what you mean how the original Super Mario game mechanics can feel a little wonky to go back to. Though I really liked the changes they did to the game mechanics in Super Mario 35. That felt like how I thought I had "remembered" it, and then playing the original again on with Switch Online, it was a little wonky. I wished they'd put out a Super Mario version with the Mario 35 game mechanics. Except for the high jumps they did when jumping on enemies as that was only done for competition purposes.
Though one other thing, after playing Super Mario 35. When I went back to the original regular version, that game felt totally empty. When you are used to a screen full of enemies, and then going back to the regular version where an entire level would only have a handful of enemies, it felt rather boring now. I'd also like a version of Super Mario where Nintendo doubled the enemy count.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, it really does feel a bit wonky if you're not used to it. The way I see it they wouldn't have changed it for Super Mario 35 if they didn't think it needed it.

I too would love to see Nintendo give a 3D Sonic a shot. I’ve always loved both Sega and Nintendo and Sonic 2 will always be my favorite game. But as the years go by Sega never consistently delivers when it comes to their most important franchise. For every Generations or Mania they release 2-3 average to bad games. Outside of Nintendo, Sega has the best and deepest original IPs yet they never utilize them in the way Nintendo does. I really love Streets of Rage 4, but why did we have to wait so long to get a sequel to part 3 and why did Sega not even care enough to develop it themselves. Sorry for the rant, I just feel Sonic deserves better than Sega gives him.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah, I totally get where you're coming from. What's even worse is that it gives the impression that Sega never had any good IPs to begin with because more casual gamers have forgotten about all the great IPs they used to have or perhaps missed them to begin with. Sega has been saying lots of things lately about trying to respect their older games more, but we'll have to see. I wonder if they didn't make Streets of Rage 4 themselves because they felt like they couldn't have done as good of a job on it as the developers who did. Same with Sonic Mania.

My favorite main Mario game is for super Super Mario World, but it's real close all across the board. As for a game that the Nintendo EAD (A team) do... Nice! I feel like I don't see as many people saying Mario 1 is their absolute favorite anymore so good to hear you mention it.

@@RetroBirdGaming For 35 years it continues to be the go-to game for new gamers getting into the NES as well as old ones wanting that nostalgia fix. That's quite the legacy.

The biggest thing I never understood about Mario, and I don't believe Nintendo has ever explained. Is that Mario was created in Japan as we all know. So I didn't get why they made him a plumber in Brooklyn, USA? I'm guessing the reason is maybe Nintendo was making most of their money on video games in the USA back in the day, and so just had Mario be an American instead of from Japan.
I've also wondered how people in Japan have always felt about that? Like I'd find it weird if an American company made their mascot be someone who is from Japan that got teleported to the Mushroom Kingdom instead of being from the USA.

I’ve always hated Mario 64 since it’s launch and never had a desire to play it mostly due to the fact that Luigi wasn’t in the game...

I really do not like Mario Sunshine. I remember back then there were promotions for the Gamecube and the Playstation where they said you could buy them and then return them in a week or something and get your money back if you didn't like it. But we got the Gamecube and Mario Sunshine and I hated that game, and so we returned the Gamecube and thus I got out of video games until the Wii.

    PlayStation has Spiderman

    Sunshine is my bae.
Nintendo's games are great but I don't know that they are the right pick for Sonic.
Sonic's strengths are how "un-nintendo" he is in terms of game design. He's the yin to the yang.

Never heard this one before, but anything is possible in the TH-cam comments I suppose :) It's the best way I've found to get contrast so that both the controller and the CRT are in good focus.

I really never understood the appeal. I won't say the games are terrible, but I have yet to find one I really like. My favourite is probably the first arcade Mario Bros. It is just not my thing I guess.

Is it weird that I’m a gamer and I don’t like Mario games? I don’t like the character I don’t really care for anything about the universe of characters either. Like Zelda they are well-made, top of class, but I don’t identify with Mario as a character I don’t find him interesting at all therefore I don’t care for playing the games.
I find Mario games similar to well written books that I have no interest in the subject matter.

Mega Man >>>>>>>>>> Mario for me on NES. Mario Bros 2 > Mario Bros 3 as well lol, better gameplay, and the levels had more pleasing art. You say it was creative, I say it was just a cheap gimmick, don't see the appeal of anything after 64.

Unpopular opinion but I don't like Mario games much. Only ones I adore are 64, , Land 1&2, Galaxy and GB Donkey Kong. I honestly like the Sonic games way more (and never grew up with a Sega console, always Nintendo systems). They're not bad or anything but the gameplay doesn't hold my interest plus I HATE the aesthetic and vocal performance of modern Mario games (the NSMB series is disgustingly ugly and I hate the weird noises Charles makes in new games)... least Odyssey had beautiful graphics

Nintendo make game’s for casuals. You don’t need to be a critical thinker to appreciate their simple a wager thin construction. If you have only a passing interest in video game’s or would like to assume the fashionable geek sensibilities of a genuine fan of video games, Nintendo are there to cater for your needs. There’s no need to apply effort when you play a Zelda or Mario game. The colours are bright and bold and story is a none entity. You always rescue a princess and the enemy is always a monster with big teeth.
There is a reason Ocarina of Time is the highest rated game ever. Because Nintendo needed it to be. The N64 was not selling and Mario 64 was not a fun game and people were turning away from the company. So Nintendo did what it always does and reached deep into it’s pockets and found millions, if not billions of dollars to spend on marketing and bribing review publications.
So if you play Ocarina of Time you will find a plodding, fiddly to control, simple game about small shrub removal and going around killing enemies one by one in a convoluted and tedious combat system in a world as sugary as a pop tart in jello. It runs like crap, it’s boring, all the characters are irritating the story is instantly forgotten and progress as painfully slow. Best game ever? Clearly not.
Nintendo trades on superlatives and its self appointed position of innovator and mechanical pioneer. Like Super Mario Bros 1-3 aren’t mediocre platform game’s that already looked old fashioned when they were released. Mario 64 is just ideas stolen from Croc which was that game designers first ever game. It’s a frustrating and slow slog through a bunch of moving hazards and difficult to deal with enemies with, as is standard for a Super Mario game, the difficulty coming from the struggle to control your character.
Sonic ‘06 meanwhile is a brilliant if not perfect action adventure game with a ton of content and interesting, satisfying gameplay. Meanwhile, Mario on the Wii has gone back to 2D to sit alongside Donkey Kong as the gold standard in game design play it safe mediocrity, where it has always been.
Finally Mario Odyssey is released and it’s game design is precisely Mario 64/Croc only now with strange human crossover world and a pacing and difficulty curve that is excruciatingly boring and unrewarding and a plot which is so retarded and strange it leaves a strange and unpleasant aura hanging over the whole experience.
If you like Nintendo, you don’t really like Nintendo. You like the idea that you have a passion for something and are interested in idiosyncratic things and are an interesting person. But all you done is been attracted by the first store at the fayre who hooked you the moment you entered the front gate (of gaming) and wrapped a big blanket around you and proclaimed itself the final word in gaming as you beamed at them, wide-eyes and gleeful as they emptied your pockets for you and force fed you sugar and lollipops whilst paying of reviewers to trash Sonic ‘06 as Sega looks ok agog at the depth of Nintendo-Pokemon Corp’s pockets and lack of integrity.

I still LOVE to rollerblade!!! It just feels so good. 🛼 after not playing Mario since SNES when getting my switch in 2020 both New Super Mario Bros U and odyssey were fantastic!!! I still need to play through the 3D all-stars collection. Mario 64 doesn’t quite hold my attention anymore. But I will try again.

I have the Shout Selects special edition Blu-Ray of The Wizard with the pixel art of the film's three main characters.
The Wizard is Rain Man meets Tommy meets Karate Kid disguised as a Nintendo advertisement.
