There's something about watching steam powered equipment, trains, steam shovels, cranes etc. that is just so fun to watch. Another era that will never come again but without them, what became America at the turn of the century would have never happened.
Just love these old ladies. No fancy tin work, no superfluous styling or sophistry - just big, basic and rugged, to get the job done. To answer Frank Simba, there's a very big gear fixed on the base, surrounding the shaft which carries the upper-works. A smaller cog, driven by a vertical shaft from the engine, engages with it to rotate (or 'slew') the cab, jib and boom. As simple, and well night indestructible as that.
So cool to see this old iron working. I work with the big electrics now but would love a chance to run this old iron. Would definitely put things into perspective
There I am feeding the boiler! I will be there again, working in the Sandbox this year as well. Say Hi to me! I'll probably be the only girl on the engines in the Sandbox.
armored train, armed steam ships. they tried steam tanks but just couldnt put enough armor around everything without killing performance, and combustion engines turned out to be already tough on the crew on the first tanks so you can imagine...
What's creepy about these things is the bucket actually looks like a head! And yes, I used to read the child story. The "jaw" and the noises make it even more Erie, but otherwise, it's a fascinating machine. ☺
Do you mean the children's story Are You My Mother? by P. D. Eastman? I remembered it when I saw this. It had the steam shovel that was referred to as 'The Snort' because of the noise it made.
Amazing old technology. And to imagine, back in the day that was the top we had in technology. Imagine what life will be like in 150 years from now when equipment is run off fuel cells combined with advanced batteries, we will wonder how on earth did we use devices that had fuel exploding hundreds of times a second in cylinders (gasoline engines). Our technology today will seem as weird as the technology of 100 years ago seems weird to us today.
People assume that electric is the future and assume that gasoline engine technology won't get any betteor get any breakthroughs. In the future I'd bet we actually get homogeneous charge compression ignition pulse detonation engines that can run on any fuel source with higher efficiency's under your hood than the coal, natural gas, and nuclear plants massive turbines get today. After all, why suffer through line losses, expensive heavy electric storage, heavy electric motors with low power to weight ratios, when we can produce the energy with just as much efficiency right where we need it? Without having to store or transmit the power? I'd wager that engine technology gets downscaled so that the engine for your lawnmowers, power equipment, tractors, boats, planes, and yes, cars and trucks, of the future will be more efficient than the turbines used in our power plants today.
Imagine the cloying atmosphere in Panama as a few dozen of these machines on the canal dig belch acrid clouds of coal smoke into the already oppressive tropical humidity!
This old girl would be steam electric right can any one shed some lite on this very nice working old girl and we still got the job done might have taken longer but you know what they say time is money ?I drove an old Mack in an old drag line and i dont know how many times he broke the steel rope when he would through the bucket out into the water to drag up more gravel ?

Love how it looks like a little chill shack, looks so cozy and welcoming compared to modern machines

It's great seeing old timer machines like this steam shovel and that old red bulldozer in action.
That is a cracking old shovel , magnificent!

Beautiful and Majestic.. Being a younger guy,I have so much respect and a Fascination on these incredible antique machines.. Just absolutely amazing!
Reminds me of the kid’s book - Mike Milligan and His Steam Shovel.
You go Mary Ann!
Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel by Virginia Lee Burton
I'm 74 yo. To this day, I call excavators "steam shovels." Because they were in the books my mother read to me when I was young.
Like Mike mulligan and maryann

Great foot ward for humankind in work and development. From North Africa
It. Is. Good. To. See. This. Restored.. Steam. Shovel. Working. From. Jeremy. Mellor.
It looks so alive, they remind me of dinosaurs.
This was the steam shovel that all other steam shovels were judged by.
Thanks to Rudolf Diesel for inventing the diesel engines!
i feel like our timeline has been cheated out of steam powered armored vehicles.
armored train, armed steam ships.

Markus Kemp. I like your use of the word Erie.
Warren Blain Ha! I didn't even notice that! 😅😅😅
The bucket gives the excavator the look of dinosaur.

I'm unfamiliar with the book you're referring to but I used to love the book mike mulligan and his steam shovel
That dude in the dozer keeps video bombing

More likely we’ll be back to killing each other with rocks
Last time I saw Steam Shovel Pengosto Amanford 1970 Note String Blade on tractor Thanks for posting Good Luc Frank
When you actually had to know what you were doing with more hands and feet then you have.
Wonder if those cables are the Original Roebling Blue Center Steel Wire Rope ?
So when these machines were active, back when, crew of 2 or 3?
Was going to be a perfect video until that wannabe dozer operator got right in front of the camera.
I love his smile as he passes in front the camera lmao
Disagree. He's part of the action.
@@peteacher52 he really was he might of not had anyone show up to film him so he saw his opportunity and ran with it lmwo
Its actually a cool IH bulldozer though
Imagine the cloying atmosphere in Panama as a few dozen of these machines on the canal dig belch acrid clouds of coal smoke into the already oppressive tropical humidity!
And greta thunberg bitching all the while lol😄
I wonder how many grease fittings are on that shovel?
A Nihtgenga I think there’s around 10 or so.
On a trackhoe excavator there is usually about 10 to 13
Just give the Buckethead nose art like a Spitfire, just draw a pair of eyes on the bucket
That would look awesome!
I’ve wanted to do that with the modern excavator I run but make it look like a dinosaur.
Who here thinks this steam shovel looks like the one in that 25 min movie?
That is so Awsome !!!!
Is that a Ruston bucyrus?
Old girl looks like something out of mortal engine’s
How did the platform rotate?
Steam engine
Loved the video. Just wish that bloody International wasn't getting in the way
Made in Milwaukee?
Awesome!
Its literally a house-shovel
They rescued Maryann from city hall

No just steam
Hydraulic did not exist yet. Everything went with wires. Take a look at the bulldozer.
evro 6?)))
Ещё немного и эту деревню не будет видно из за дыма😁
chug baby chug!!!
Вот это техника.Лайк
вот оно !!! evro 6 в действии!!!
SUPER BAGER- SUPER VIDEO
Bikin polusi udara , lebih baik dbikin kancing baju tuh mesin , atau jarum suntik....
Nice !
surreal and steampunkish
nah its real and not science fiction, this is 100 years ago
@@PSXuploads Yes, but sci-fi may have elements of fantasy but its ultimately grounded in reality and takes its inspiration from it.
credo que poluição
Он еще и на угле работает чтоли😅
この重機、燃費悪そう、蒸気機関車みたいなマフラーから排気ガス恐ろしい。
fkn dozer ruined it
