When I worked in his area, we’d get new guys coming through and I’d say to them ‘watch this’ and get him started on what could very well be hours long convo on machines if not limited by break 🤣 I’d just have to say something like ‘the hydraulics acting choppy in the dozer’ and off he’d go 🤣

      Well, the Grand Canal in China, at more than a thousand miles long, was dug with shovels...

    • @oldsguy354
      @oldsguy354 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be fair, the Panama Canal was dug with much larger Bucyrus shovels. Bucyrus merged with Erie Steam Shovel (formerly Ball Engine Manufacturing) in 1927, quite some time after the canal was completed. The Shovel in this video looks to be an Erie B built sometime in the late teens or early 20's, but I could be wrong about the dates. However, I can say for sure that it was built on the north side of West 12th street between Washington and Weschler Avenues in Erie, Pa. That Shovel propelled itself about a block west of there to a rail line where it loaded itself aboard for shipment to its new owner.

Remember one being off to the side of road as we went to and from our winter and spring vacation spot a hundred miles or so east of San Diego year after year. It just sat there abandoned. Its housing or cab was made out of wood and painted yellow or gold with a smokestack on top like this. Don't know what make or manufacturer. The time frame would be 1970-74. We only stopped going after my grandfather sold his lot that his RV trailer sat on. It was still there after our very last visit.

      There Were MORE Than Just One That Was Used On The Panama Canal, And They Were A LOT BIGGER. And It Moved Along A Railroad, Where The Entire Road Bed Was Hoisted And Slid To Different Heights As The Passages We're Cleared Away. PBS Had An "American Experience" Show About It's Construction, And Even Teddy Roosevelt Had A Photo OP With Him Manning The Controls Of One Of The Shovels Of The Day...
