    I had to learn Morse to 10 words per minute back in the 80's for my Pilot's licence.
    The test was to identify three letter groups as this is how radio navigation beacons were identifiable.
    I wrote a small progam in basic for my MZ80 that generated random 3 letter groups in Morse. It was surprisingly easy when you listen for the "sound" of the letter rather than think of dots and dashes.
    This brought back memories. My daughter is five and I am teaching it to her.

    • @ElectronicsNotes
      @ElectronicsNotes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yes, learning Morse is all about listening for the overall sound of each letter. Constant practice is really the only way and programmes like the one you wrote for your computer are an excellent help.

      Just saw this post from two years ago and am curious. When you say you had to learn Morse for your “Pilot’s license” I’m assuming you’re talking about a FAA Private Pilot Certificate. If so, I got my PPL back in 1972 and the FAA did not require applicant’s to know Morse code. The only thing Pilot’s need for Morse is to identity that you’ve tuned into the correct VOR and you do not have to learn Morse to do that because the Morse code for a given VOR is printed on the Sectional, Low alt chart, and the IFR approach plates. That being said, I’d like to learn Morse mostly for grins so I can recognize the correct VOR by listening to it. For general communication I recommend using the Tap Code that POWs used at the Hanoi Hilton during the Vietnam war. It’s a hell of a lot easier than Morse. Google it.

    I started just three days ago. I have a tip for people trying to learn:
    Don't try to learn the whole alphabet in 1 day. Learn the shorter letters at first and try to make many words with those letters. Record them and see if you can recognize them.
    When you feel reasonable comfortable, add 2 to 4 letters.
    Good letters to start:
    .
    -
    .-
    -.
    ..
    --
    ...
    ---

    • @ElectronicsNotes
      @ElectronicsNotes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Good idea. It is not really possible to remember them all in one day. I seem to remember I had a tape (yes it was many years ago) and I listened to a section of it repeatedly each day. In this way I fixed a few letters firmly in my mind, and then I moved on to the next set. You could do this with the video.

      We have other later videos in the series that start to mix the letters up and then send them without any visual indication on screen (the answers are given in the description for checking after all the letters or numbers have been sent). In this way we hope it gives anyone wanting to learn Morse code a progression through the learning process.

I have been a Ham for nearly 40 years and have only used CW. I can copy code 50 wpm. I learned code similar to this way of teaching. Only difference is, I learned a combination of 5 letters and numbers a day until they were all covered. Then it was random numbers and letters.

    I think it would be easier if we did, a dot for A, two dots for B, three dots for C, four dots for D. And then, use a dash three dots for E, two dash and two dots for F… and so on…. That would be easier.

    • @ElectronicsNotes
      @ElectronicsNotes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The code was worked out in terms of the frequency with which letters occurred in the alphabet. "E" is the most common and therefore it was given the shortest code, that of a single dot. Other letters were assigned different codes according to their frequency and ease of sending, etc. Even though it was done over a hundred years ago, there was science that went into it. Sadly it does take a little more learning, but once you get used to it and have learned the different codes, the letters as they are give a much easier way of sending than other schemes. I hope that explains the reasoning behind the allocation of the different codes.

    • @Hebdomad7
      @Hebdomad7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be listening to it at his speed. 'D' is not DAH - DIT - DIT ... it's DahDitDit. Learning each letter as it's own word/sound is the only way you'll be able to work at any tolerable speed. If you are counting each Dit and Dah you are going too slow and learning Morse will be more difficult.

    Why is E a single dot and O is three lines?

    • @ElectronicsNotes
      @ElectronicsNotes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I don’t know all the logic behind the selection of Morse characters, but they did look at the frequency of the different letters in general text. As “e” is the most common, this was allocated the shortest Morse character, ie a single dot. Not sure if the logic behind three dashes for “o” but it is less common in general text. In general they looked at the frequency of use of the different letters in text and allocated the Morse characters accordingly. Does anyone else out there know more . . Any insight would be appreciated.

      I understand your reticence about the video, but it has been very popular. The aim was to start to reinforce the sound and the letter. As many people use the markings for the letters, i.e. dots & dashes at the very beginning we included them as well. Later videos in the series just have the letters so we have tried to develop listening to the rhythm from there.
