      Yeah, I watched this before tennis, last night and got lucky with 15 minutes to practice the shoulder plane concept. Had a pretty good serving night as a result. Can't wait to try again.

    Wow.... mind = blown..... Excellent concise explanations!! I feel like I finally understood the concept of the "snap" and what everybody means by pronation... and the shoulder tip ("hopping over"), wow, just wow! Thank you!

  • @ReidVV
    @ReidVV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Super helpful video. Especially, Kevin's discussion about the proper plane to rotate the shoulders on. Great, useful visualization. Also, Ian's pronation drill, just slapping the ball down into the ground, is a great way to get the feel of what pronation actually is and it also demonstrated how much power it adds, with much less effort than expected, when hitting a serve. Here's another example of why Essential Tennis is number one in online tennis instruction. Thanks.

  • @fdctrumpet
    @fdctrumpet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great job, ET. For me the biggest hurdle of late has been understanding and feeling pronation. Finally, I spent 20-30 minutes hitting serves (abbreviated motion) with NO REGARD for where the ball would go to learn it! It has paid off with big dividends as the light came on with a few huge serves with little effort and understanding what was different between those and what I typically do. It takes some humility to spray ball around the court (especially horizontally in my case) to take your lumps and focus on new techniques and feelings as opposed to always being focused on hitting the box and accuracy-centric practice and/or drills.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's SUCH a tough thing for players to "get" after years of serving without pronation. I'd easily list it as the most difficult thing to change for amateur players. Great work with your focused practice, Chad! -Ian

    1. Practice your trophy position
    2. Find your own rhythm and practice it
    3. Make sure your shoulder is using the vertical plane ( Chest needs to face the sky when starting the serve)
    4. Practice releasing/snaping slowly. The combination of snap + elbow

    You two are great teachers. Very clear on everything you want from us. My only problem is applying all of this. Serving is always my issue in matches and by now i feel kinda stupid, because i can't learn how to serve properly, even with dedication, even with assistance. My serve doesn't match my groundstroke level. It's like watching two different players in one body.

    • @jerrychristner9187

      Tons of shadow swings to increase muscle memory so that you stop thinking about technique & start focusing on looking at the ball itself (where you're going to hit it).

      Jader Sant'Ana my advice: just try to throw everything you’ve known about serve (except the continental grip) and try to develop your own method. It’ll work definitely.

      Same here and I hit around 300 serves per week on my own outside of match play. I will crack serves consistently and then start missing badly and it demolishes my motion confidence which mentally does me in. It’s hard to recover from that when you’re scared you’re going to give up games bc your consistency is gone.

    I've been playing recreational tennis player for 6 years now and i can say serve is the hardeset thing to learn. I only recently learn the proper way of doing it after watching tons of videos (including ET, thanks Ian et al) and months of shadow practice to teach my muscle. I try to emulate Roger's technique because it makes my muscle relax and loose grip.

    I understand the importance of pronation, but that last step where the palm ends up facing outward looks unnatural and potential for injury. I can only finish that way if I come across my body, not out to the side. Am I missing something?

  • @ttoswald

    It would be really nice if the video showed the ball throughout the toss. Like most tennis videos covering serves, the ball goes off screen. Sometimes even the racquet face is off screen when it hits the ball. Really wish the person recording would back up and frame the entire motion.

    I personally think the trophy pose is the worst concept ever.. as most people treat it as a pose and stop or slow their motion at that point. Then speeding up after again is waste of energy and waste of racket head speed. I noticed a huge jump in swing and ball speed when i delayed my motion with my racket down and have a fluent increased motion through trophy to ball contact.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's lots of different rhythms that result in world class serves, Lars. I definitely agree that any kind of stopping or halting of energy is a bad thing. I personally like the word "gather" to describe the calm, smooth loading that happens for longer timed rhythms. I hear where you're coming from but don't think "trophy pose" automatically means "stop your momentum" at all. -Ian

    • @LarzB
      @LarzB 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that it doesn't mean that, i just see people slowing down to almost a halt when getting to the trophy pose a lot. And just like the hammer approach with pronating the arm, having a fluid motion accesses easy serve speed. I think a lot of people hit through the ball instead of up to the ball because of lack of forward speed of the end result. Next to thinking horizontal in stead of vertical.

    • @francopolo510
      @francopolo510 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have exactly this problem with the 'trophy position'. In this winter I worked at my service with my teacher. She told me at first my service motion was wrong. I learnt the 'full service motion' like Kevin showed. Then my next problem was/is she said I don't go in that trophy position. Now that I now this I try everything unnatural to get in this position. It is a hard act to think on full service motion, get in trophy position and finally make a good finish movement. And there problem no 3 pronotation. Since am working on this things clearly my service was getting better but at all I was missing much fun and I was frustrated. Some says my whole service concept was broken. Okay what is the point? Is there any natural! way to improve the service with correct motion. How do the pros have learned their motions was this learning by feeling, by doing, by looking from others. Who tell what is a good service?

    • @jayrussell26
      @jayrussell26 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Lars, Similar thing happened to me - exactly how you described. I think this position is more of a “checkpoint” during a fluid motion - than one could check occurs in a video afterwards, rather than a “pose” which implies a pause. Thanks for the keen observation, Lars, I think you are spot on.

    • @jerrychristner9187
      @jerrychristner9187 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as your knees go down when your ball arm is up & (!) your racquet is at trophy position when you launch yourself up (this is what should cause the racquet to go down, not by dominant arm), it's just about the timing.

    I believe your use of the word "style" is a tad misleading. I think each of these styles works for a particular type of player, racquet and serve. If Pete Sampras tried to serve Roddick "style" he would probably have suffered serious injury at some point because his racquet is very heavy. Plus, he would have been in a terrible position to serve and volley after finishing the serve.
    Federers racquet is also very heavy which means that it's hard to lift above your shoulder without momentum. Roddicks racquet was very light (which is probably why he never volleyed very well).
    Furthermore, people who are skinny or short but strong in the core/legs can use more of their core muscles and legs by twisting more in the motion while stronger upper body players can use more of their chest muscles in an abbreviated backswing but exaggerated knee bend / backward dip.
    Long story short...All of these differences in mechanics have a substantial effect on how the body and racquet is used to strike the ball. I really wish teachers would put a bit more thought into what is really going on when the service motion is executed and the effect (and challenges) certain variations bring about. There are a few requirements for a good serve and these must be emphasized. And then there are options from which a player must choose...each with pros and cons. If you present the options in this format...then players can evaluate why they might want to adjust a particular part of their serve to solve a particular issue they have.
    Thanks for the content...I appreciate all the hard work you guys put in. I think you're getting better every year and would be able to take it to the next level if you bring the physics and bio mechanics of tennis into your discussions. This ultimately is where a coach can transform a student's game in a way that student could never do on their own. It's also fun to learn physics as you play...

    People have a lot of different priorities in life and practice, practice, practice may be impractical. Right now I'm better off watching videos than practicing. I haven't hit a tennis ball since last fall and likely won't hit another for some time, maybe late this summer.
    Are you raising kids? Learning new stuff for work? Doing volunteer public service? Deep into your career? Taking care of elderly parents? Putting kids through college? Tennis as a career is pretty awful as you have a small number of players that do well while the vast majority struggle. Life is about managing priorities, responsibilities, resources and logistics and, while you may want to be #1 at your club, there are things that are far more important than your tennis game.
    What's up with the gold, spray painted racquet?

    You are teaching the forms that many top players use. Injuries among these TOP players are rampant except I feel Fed and Joko. If You guys and many other online coaches continue teaching these forms, which rightly in my view are nuances and flairs of particular players, without pointing out the power source, beginners and also experienced recreation players will injure their back, knees, shoulders and elbows.
    The power comes from titling and launching your back using your abs (like when you push up, head butting). This action launches your racket effortlessly and in fact lifts you off the ground. There is no squatting and jumping like Anderson, Monfill and Sharapova.
    Models who tilts their back and uses the muscles in the torso especially the abs are Fed, Stan, Joko, Safin, Sampras, Agassi.
    It’s not what you see, it is what you don’t see.
    Watch Fed’s action here.

    Too much of talking and very little practical demonstration.
