    I saw one of your other videos on this and this 1st vs 2nd serve approach has helped me no end. My friend was always telling me 'you're not hitting across the ball enough' but now I realise this is more of a second serve thing to get the dip and swing. I went and practiced this morning and felt free to hit through the ball more on the first serve and was just bludgeoning balls with reasonable accuracy it felt so good. I've also found that practicing these two techniques gives me more control and when I do a dodgy ball toss I can adjust a go 'well it look like this serves going to be a more loopy one!'. I definitely need to work on my ball toss!

    Note 2:20 toss is to right of raonic's head for flat. Vs 3:20 with toss to left of his head for kick.

    Technically this player would be a 4.0, because if he doesn't have a second serve, he can not "place the second serve" to meet the criteria of the 4.5 in the NTRP ranking system. This lack of spin control is also disqualifying.
    After the couple of lessons with you, yes, he is now 4.5, so good work on improving his skill level so quickly.

    It is funny about having the racket on the back of the head. My daughter had trouble with the waiters tray. I think Peter Freeman mentioned about putting racket on head to help as training aid to stop doing waiters tray. She tried doing it and incredibly she starts hitting all these aces with the racket on back of her head. She felt funny at first but the result was terrific. Now she is slowly little by little moving further from her head but staying away from the waiter tray. Your video is terrific as always.

    I'm struggling to understand the kick serve swing path. To send the ball forwards, you must have to hit it from behind, but to impart spin you have to brush to the side. Does this mean the racket swing path changes direction during contact? Ie if you viewed from above, would there be an angle created between the swing to contact and the follow through along the baseline?
    Thanks

    Unique student, seems to overkill all of the instructions you have given to him. I appreciate your ability to work with all kinds of tennis players. Still like to see you work with a junior player. I'm sure there are many more parents on here hoping for the same. You are just not improving tennis players, you are helping parents with tennis players as well, just remember that! :)

      I would say try varying your toss position into the court. Transferring more momentum forward will send the ball faster

    For the kick serve, would you toss the ball about 20 cm into the court just like the flat serve?

    • @satjiwan
      @satjiwan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both should be into the court (fwd). But some vary the left and right placement. See raonic's at 2:20 and 3:20. And some try not to vary so receiver can't read what serve is coming.

    • @DeceitfulDestiny
      @DeceitfulDestiny 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, you need it to be in the court still so you have room to hit through the ball and also use your body's momentum forward

    Very good video Ian!
    I can't generate a lot of power using my legs to jump since I have two bad knees.
    Is there any way around this? More spin to compensate?
    I'm a 4.5 player but my serve is the one thing holding me back as I have to try extra harder than my opponent to win my serve games.
    Because of this I feel like I get tired faster and end up going for more low percentage shots to end the point quicker. ( But this is probably a question for another video ).
    Thanks in advance for all the help you give to players wanting to learn more!

    How's the kick serve topspin? Every single video the coach says it's topspin. It's not physically possible to get topspin. If you're right-handed, the kick serve spins more on a 45-degree plane than it does to a 90 (perfect topspin). That's what makes the kick to the right when it hits the court, instead of accelerating forward like it would if it was topspin.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pure topspin is possible, but it takes a really aggressive toss and contact point back to the left (for a righty). You're right, that's definitely not what we're referring to here. -Ian

    Hi Ian. Should the toss be to different or the same location? And i,m talking on both planes: towards the net and out to the side. I see some people saying the toss should be inside the court, but i find that encourages a flatter serve because i'm forced to open up my body more to get to it. Whereas on a kick/top serve i prefer it alongside more (on service line rather than inside the court) as i can then stay more side on - like Raonic does. Thoughts?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, SM. For optimal results the toss should definitely be in a different spot between flat and topspin. Spin serve should be a little bit more overhead. Flat a little more to the right and a little further in front. To begin you can work off the same toss, especially if you've never felt the difference between the two swing paths like John. -Ian
