  • Badd Medicine here and its The Haunting of Bly Manor reaction time
    The Haunting of Bly Manor is an American gothic romance drama miniseries created by Mike Flanagan, and released on October 9, 2020 by Netflix. The second entry in Flanagan's The Haunting anthology series, it mostly acts as an adaptation of the 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, but also includes other elements either based on James' other works or created for the show. It features much of Hill House's crew and some of the same cast, such as Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Amelia Eve, T'Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Tahirah Sharif, Amelie Bea Smith, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, and Henry Thomas, though Pedretti, Jackson-Cohen and Thomas returned from Hill House as different characters, as did Kate Siegel, Carla Gugino, and Catherine Parker in recurring roles; the two series' narratives are not connected.
    Following a nonlinear narrative, The Haunting of Bly Manor follows the events occurring in the eponymous countryside manor in the United Kingdom, mostly upon the arrival of a young American hired as an au pair for the two children living at Bly, and who is unaware that the manor is haunted.

    I think one of the reasons Dani felt so obliged to marry Eddie was because she was indebted to his mom, his family. Again and again, they hinted that Dani didn't have the best mother and his family had taken care of her. They saw her as a daughter and his mom even gave Dani her wedding dress. Of course she felt like she owed them and she couldn't break up with Eddie because they all expected them to get married. I feel like she would have been deeply conflicted even if she wasn't gay. Because she didn't love him romantically at all. It was friendship which turned into an obligation.

    Owen's speech about his mom is so beautifully written, and perfectly captures that internal struggle of taking care of a sick parent. That love and pain and yes, resentment, that can come when all of your energy is focused on taking care of the person who you always relied on to take care of you. It's heavy, just like Owen described. Rahul Kohli did great in that scene.

    such an amazing discussion from you guys! a few things I wanna point out.
    1) Dani’s “ghost” isn’t just about the guilt of Eddie’s death; it’s also about the guilt of her own sexuality. notice that once her feelings for Jamie become more clear and pronounced, his “ghost” becomes more prominent and is no longer restricted to the mirrors.
    2) we’ve already seen the dolls for both Miss Jessel and the lady in the lake. Miss Jessel’s doll is all black, whereas the lady in the lake has a white dress. I won’t say more due to spoilers.
    I’m so excited for the next reaction because it holds one of my favorite episodes of the series! ❤

    • @artistimd2497
      @artistimd2497 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It should be for them to discover if ghost is Jessel or not, not for you to spoil it for them. They appreciate not being spoon fed the story. Anyway, luckily they already finished watching the show i think. This is a late release.

    • @the_nikster1
      @the_nikster1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@artistimd2497 I didn't spoil anything. in fact, I just pointed out something that Diamond Dave said in the reaction and just reminded them of something that they might have missed in the show. the show clearly shows up to this point that the black doll that Flora gives is Jessel, wearing a black dress and we've seen her wearing a black dress. the lady in the lake that we've seen is always seen wearing white. I'm just pointing out what they've already seen but might have missed due to talking or hunting for ghosts in the background.

  • @naiderl
    @naiderl ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I love that the show trusts its audience enough to give us just a shot of the faceless doll and a music cue, even though there has been no explanation of its significance ❤
    Regarding Jamie's reaction to Dani's freakout, I didn't find it forced at all. The thing with queer relationships is that, sometimes, not everyone involved is at the same point in their journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. In those cases, you don't want to push the other person to do anything they're still not ready to do, and also, you don't want to invest your feelings in a relationship that has no chance to go anywhere because of the other person's lingering hang-ups.
    That's what I read in Jamie's reaction, anyway. "Whoops! I let this go too far when you're clearly not ready for it. My bad!". Half of it is respect for Dani's journey, half of it is self-protection.

    Fantastic reaction!! I love how deeply you try to understand these characters! Bly Manor is a phenomenal at making you feel for each of them. It’s definitely more creepy than scary imo, but it’s real strength is how MOVING it can be.
    Side note: It might be a UK cultural aspect lost on most Americans but when Peter says he’s ‘not allowed into their club’ you can assume he’s telling the truth because of his Scottish accent. Neither Rebecca or him are going to receive fair recognition because of their race & gender (for Becca) and class & ethnicity (for Peter), especially considering this is the 80s and how overt the discrimination is then. It’s why they’re both connecting themselves to Henry. It’s Peter’s method to access the life he desires (materialism characterized early in ep 3 with his attitude towards the suits/car) and why Rebecca is only taking this job as a way to gain a powerful connection that aids her career aspirations. They have to be clever if they want what society says they shouldn’t have, and Peter manipulates that point of similarity to relate to Rebecca.

    • @ct6852
      @ct6852 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah was thinking the same. I know the class system is a lot more entrenched over there. Or it feels that way, at least. Can tell that's a big part of what binds Rebecca to Peter regardless of the red flags.

Concerning Rebecca and Peter, unfortunately sociopaths and people with low empathy are drawn to those with high levels of empathy and take advantage of them. Rebecca tried to see the best in Peter and made excuses for him, which happens in abusive relationships. Just as hill house was focused on grief, this show focuses a lot on relationships, good and bad.

    What breaks my heart is kid Danni is from a bad home and finds a whole safe healthy family with her best friend at such a young age.
    It’s he who mentions in the toast that he kissed her and asked her to marry him and she said no. Then he says he knew what they wanted so he was persistent. But, while he was a very nice dude he wasn’t listening. He cast her as “his girl” in his main character story and her feelings were assumed by him.
    I think she loved him as a best friend and brother and ALSO it was the mid 80s - being a lesbian isn’t even a thing you would have language to know you were as a teen. Just anxiety and confusion.
    So he’s not a villain - he’s just decided what he wants and deluded himself into thinking she’s enthusiastically agreeing when she’s dragging her feet at every checkpoint. It doesn’t mean she knew that there was even a possibility for a life outside of the one she was being carried down.
    Such good writing.

    The fiancé wasn't a real ghost/spirit (unlike the others we see in the series)- he was a symbol of the guilt that was haunting her after he died.

    I'm sure the liquid courage helps a bit, but it's great seeing Dani try to rake charge of her life and face her ghost. Speaking of, I don't know how many sightings there have been lately, but I hope we get another ghost counter recap at the end of the series.

    Seeing this in my recommended made me so happy, thank you for the video!
    Now to the stuff: When Dani and Jamie were talking about possession and love, I think Dani was talking about her ex(Edmund?). They had known each other since kids, as we saw, and were best friends, and Dani did love him, just not the way he loved her. And maybe she meant that he wanted to possess her, own her, by being her husband. That love and friendship wasn't enough. And when he couldn't have all of her(marriage), he lashed out and his real face was revealed. Also notice how in the funeral he was standing behind Dani holding her. As well as when Dani was by the sink and the hands appeared.
    I think you kind of missed an important part right at the end of ep 4 when Dani says that "It's just you and me now", I think she means that she's accepted that he's going to always be there, haunting her, and that she can't be with anyone else.
    About the kids and the muddy footprint ghost-lady, I think they were definitely protecting Dani. Flora saw that Dani wasn't in her bed, then saw the ghost, and alerted Miles. They then went to stall and distract Dani until the ghost was gone.
    Sorry for my rambling comment.

    The ghost with glasses looked to me like the house sucked it in. People say some ghosts are tied to locations and others are tied to people. Seems to me the house wants to keep control over all ghosts, even ones that don't originate at the house.

    The balance of past trauma vs current accountability is such a fine line and something Ive struggled with - something that i didnt understand earlier in life that led to the darkest chapter of my life. Peter reminds me of a very very very abusive ex - an ex who knew how to spin their trauma for personal gain.

It's probably been mentioned here already so apologies if I missed it. Anyway, it was nowhere near as good as this series.

    I like what Oak is saying here about Peter. Yeah, he's a jerk. I'd like to say this though- You can understand someone without justifying or defending their behavior. Like, you get this person has issues and traumas, but, if those issues are not your fault, you don't need to live with them. You don't need to tolerate abuse just because you feel for the abuser. Some people like villain characters because of their complex backgrounds, but don't root for them. It was so refreshing to see you guys delve deeper into suck a complex issue.
