My hat goes off to Chris and all the drummer's out there who have tackled Gary's Book well after Gary's time on earth. I had the great blessing to study with Gary when he was alive and I will tell you without Gary's conversations with me in his studio, on the telephone late at night, in his backyard, on his deck, in restaurants, at clinics and at the dining room table; I don't honestly know if I would have had the perseverance that Gary encouraged in me to tackle systems like The Disco, Sock Talks and Funk. I had so much love for Gary, although not perfectly, to please him, that I just felt I could not let him down and deliver a choppy, erratic lesson. I used to record every lesson I got from Gary like I was recording a piece of music for Stravinsky. And I worked 5 to 6 hours a day on these systems to get to that fluidity. I miss Gary madly.
That's amazing. 5-6 hours a day! As I mentioned in my comment I just made, my friend lives down the street from Gary and he tells me what a great guy he was. He got me to get The New Breed.
I love your playing and determination. I have enjoyed a wonderful and God blessed career as an Elementary School Music Teacher. Music is Gods gift to all humans that keeps giving. I quickly notice my Students mood changes when we are performing music.

I tell ALL my students at a capable level to love this book. It’s tough. I’ve been through it a few times with only a couple systems (including the one you demonstrated in this vid, thank you!). How do you know when enough is enough to move on to the next page? Is it when you’re able to read it through or when you can play it at a certain tempo? I want to maximize my efficiency with this book because you’re preaching to the choir when you say it’s a game changer. Greetings from cold cold Canada !
Chris I love you man! You made me laugh. Then you made me cry when I saw you play lol. Wish I could do that! I know, time... My friend grew up down the street from Gary. He says it was like living on the same block as Babe Ruth. He's friends with Corey Roberts too. He turned me on to Gary when I started to play drums about 5 months ago. So I have switched my kit around 100 times or so. I have a disability in my left wrist. I severed my nerve, tendons, ligaments and arteries. Leaving nearly no strength and zero feeling in my thumb and first two fingers. The last two work. So I had problems holding my stick, and feeling where it is. So no accuracy, weak, and my stick flies in different directions. It's held on with what's basically a rubber band. I was crossing sticks so much and catching my left under hats, I got frustrated. So I found out about Offset Eclipse pedals. I got one, and a cable operated hat stand. I put my hats on my right, controlling with my left foot. After I did that I had this big space on my left so at first I put my floor tom there. Then I put my toms like a lefty, small to large right to left. Without knowing what it was (new drummer remember!) I started playing open handed. I had another set of hats on a regular stand in my right so I had two hats on my right, and my ride. This really helped. BUT, I hate the cable operated hat. And it was hard to control the right hat with my right foot. So I just decided the other day to move my regular hi hat stand to my left. Now I have 3 pedals on my left side. It's EXTREMELY hard for me to lead with my left hand in the left hats. But I am committed to learning this way, with hats one each side. NOW after finally buying the new breed, I am going to ditch the DW cable hat, and put a regular hi hat stand in both sides. Plus a set of XHats I guess, if I understand this. Rather than a floor tom on each side, I think I want to use a side snare. I have a Pearl M-80 I like. But if it's right to use floor toms on each side, I do have a 14 I can use. My regular setup is currently 12/13/16. I am also.... Lol considering going to a 10/12/16 setup due to space and ergonomics. And fitting more stuff! Wow, what a long comment! Still with me? LoL So I am going to change things and look at this like I'm just starting over, and want to learn this way from the "start". So I lose less than 5 months. I'm terrible anyway! I believe this will help my independence, which I am hoping lets me rely on my right when my left hand gets tired. Usually after a few minutes it's ok again. My left playing is so sloppy. The stick control is nearly non existent. So after reading this novella, I have a big question: Do you think this is a good path to take, or do I need to go back to playing paradiddles and double stroke rolls first? I am committed to playing open handed no matter what. I haven't quite figured out where to put a third hi hat (x hat style, right?). But I will figure all that out. I like tinkering with my drums as much as playing them. I just want to get them how it is described in the first part of the book. Which is exactly how far I have gotten in it! Hey Spagz, less talk, more listening, from a great teacher that is. Seriously, not busting chops, I can see your sincerity in learning the instrument and your appreciation of the New Breed, however what I suggest is finding a great teacher, with an understanding of all avenues, especially tailored to your needs. There are a number of good teachers that teach Gary’s brilliant work, but a great local teacher who you can learn the ropes from, and over time bond with, will answer all your questions and steer you in the right direction, each step of the way…small steps my friend. Nothing beats sitting next to a great teacher, ears wide open, trust, and hard work 😊 Best wishes!

He turned me on to Gary when I started to play drums about 5 months ago.

Without knowing what it was (new drummer remember!) I started playing open handed. I had another set of hats on a regular stand in my right so I had two hats on my right, and my ride.
