PRESENTING TONY CRUZ WITH EPISODE 12 -
💥THE BEST description of TONY CRUZ and his enormous talent was something Gary Chester himself said when asked about Tony's playing! It makes me smile every single time I hear it (which is a lot because I made it into his ringtone lol ;) Gary passionately replied to that questions saying "That kids got g-d damn GOOD ears and g-d damn GOOD time...he's got EVERYTHING!"
🤎 Wow lol. And how proud Gary would be to know that his prized and enormously talented student TONY CRUZ grew to also be a tremendous man and a monster drummer! Equally with pride, I present you with this long awaited episode with Tony meeting us on the "Horizon"side of the series. Although you wont find what Tony demonstrates in this Horizon episode on the pages of The New Breed book, innovations like this are what the original NB teachings can inspire creatively.
Here Tony share’s his valuable Pre-New Breed time with Gary, giving drummers an idea of the headspace they'll need to be able to hold what Gary wants them to grab onto! He talks on a Gary vision and objective about feeling more and thinking less on your instrument; reflecting on the importance of Garys teachings on HOW to Listen and understand your instrument through powerful lenses referencing a staple Gary teaching of the masculine and feminine... integral pieces that core students remember as powerful inner shifts. These are the types of things Gary inspired, for us to seek and discover. These types of expansions let you see your instrument in a more orchestral kind of way - providing directionals easing a mind that is challenged and "bored" by even the thought of playing slower tempos.
WE HOPE YOU ENJOY EPISODE 12 AND ARE INSPIRED TO SHARE IT WITH FRIENDS AND DRUMMERS, AND FEEL FREE TO POST A MESSAGE!

    Great video, Tony; I was surprised at how challenging it was for me when I first started singing the different legs of the paradiddle; it looks and sounds so easy, but I got a rude awakening when I tried it. Loved your comments on the philosophy of NewBreed and also your thoughts on prepping.

    A good way to prove your theory is I’ve been working at 80 BPM hitting notes alternate singles. If you don’t prep you can’t keep time you will flam every time in order to hit exactly on the beat. Give it a try the prep is everything good vid thanks!

      Hi. The bass line was just made up and you can use any bass line you wish, including 2 bar phrases making it even harder! Also, less dense bass line even harder. At least for me. Accents on bell with tip or shoulder fine. Gary was all about sound not form

      haha😂well yes it may have been painful in the beginning of my journey through Gary’s method. The first few days were enlightening because it seemed like it should not be so difficult to sing and play simple rhythms. My experience was that as I was putting the time in, the systems began to feel great and organic. I loved it and it was wildly helpful to me in my ability to listen to music and feel time as I played. That gave me a giant boost of confidence which was now in “my back pocket”. Great stuff, Corey! I like your touch on the kit - just watching your hand position I can tell you are good. I did some of NB back in the late 80s after Dave Weckl came on the scene and talked about it and while I did some of them I haven't really touched anything else with it since then. FF to now and I'm finding some amazing playing that Dave did w/ CCEB in 88 (my favorite era) and that has brought me back to NB and this channel. I'm about to get my butt kicked from the beginning but am looking forward to it! Thanx for your work on here!

    Hi Really enjoyed the video . I can completely understand how good this book is for development and more . Could you please give me some advice. I also own stick control & accents and rebounds by stone . And syncopation by reed, and now new breed by gary chester. I also own a great book by henry adler/buddy rich. A lifetime could be spent on each one . How do i make sure i benefit from all , i feel so intimidated and daunted by all the info , it almost makes me feel like "well whats the point " too much to learn in one lifetime 😳 any tips ? Really enjoyed the video - thank you Tommy

    • @markfrankel7153
      @markfrankel7153 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Tommy, All of the books you’ve chosen are excellent sources to help you develop your drumming skills. But, they also are each challenging in their own way, and when flipping through them, can look pretty daunting, as you said. I think the key is to focus on each exercise from a place of practice and not immediate mastery. Stay with the current page you can handle, and try not to look too far ahead. That may lead to an overwhelming feeling that can be discouraging. The development will be slow, but if you are patient, you will notice improvements consistently. Try flipping back a few exercises if you hit a wall, and I guarantee you will feel how you’ve improved. Then move forward again until the wall breaks through. Repeat this process as much as you have to. Again, practice over mastery. Maybe try paring it down to just two books for a bit and see how you feel - one book focusing on rudiments (Stick Control is a great choice) and one on kit playing (New Breed for sure!) And, don’t forget to leave plenty of time to just jam and play along with your favorite songs. Fun and enjoyment above all else!! Good luck and stay in touch! Best, Mark Frankel

  • @shackleton72
    @shackleton72 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi - great video, completely understand the why's and how's of the whole concept of the book. I have one question for all drummers, I have stones, stick control & accents and rebounds, ted reeds syncopation, and Chesters new breed , I also have a great book by Adler and buddy rich ! My question is - how to practice from all of these when each one could consume a lifetime? Just feels a bit intimidating and daunting. Any advice really welcome - 🙏

    • @tonycruz2048
      @tonycruz2048 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for your compliment. As for your great question, I can only attempt an answer if I point out two things 1) Every drummer in our great community has different goals, aspirations, and, therefore journeys and 2) I must point out a not-so-obvious distinction about these books. Stick Control, Accents & Rebounds, Syncopation, and Rich and Adler’s Snare Drum Rudiments are treasures to us all. Except for Buddy’s book, I have been through the others for most of my early drumming life, and they have helped me immensely. However, most of them are founded in rudiments and variations of them. Syncopation is great for reading, especially in a jazz context. I would argue, however, that once drummers get their rudimental chops to an acceptable level, those books stop there. I have seen others take pages and apply them in creative ways, but the books are still rudimentary. The New Breed, on the other hand (literally lol), is a completely different animal. The problem begins if drummers approach the New Breed the way they would another. It is not an exercise book. When drummers tell me they have been through it, I hear a small chuckle followed by mild sadness in my head because it’s likely that person has missed the deeper, most important meaning of the book. What other drum book has “melody” pages and Systems that encourage one to explore right- and left-hand lead, singing, etc.? I can tell you first-hand (especially having studied with Gary for so many years) that this book can change your life in more ways than drumming. I have four pieces of advice for you. First, watch the existing New Breed videos Katrina has put out. Next, keep an eye out for others that will be coming out soon. Third, practice this book at slower tempos; lean into quarter = 40 BPMs. And lastly, consider reaching out to Katrina for lessons. I hope this inspires you to explore more of the New Breed. Wishing you discovery on your journey.
