  • In this Brooklyn, NYC food tour, we take a walking tour around Carroll Gardens and visit many old-school Italian independently-owned #food businesses along Court Street and also visit vintage shops and a #vinyl record store on Court Street. We then walk to nearby Henry Street, where we visit a vintage apothecary turned modern day soda fountain.
    We start the day with a visit to Court Pastry Shop, where we go inside this beloved Italian bakery and see all of the homemade pastries, cookies and cakes they make fresh daily. We purchase a vanilla cannoli and lobster tail pastry and also get one of their delicious homemade Italian ices to enjoy on nearby on the steps of one of the Italianate brownstones this neighborhood is known for.
    We then visit Caputo's Bake Shop, where we go inside and see their vast selection of homemade Italian breads, rolls, biscuits and cakes and cookies. We purchase a loaf of semolina golden raisin with fennel and a pretzel roll and twist and our dog Hudson enjoys some of their biscotti. We also visit G. Esposito & Sons Jersey Pork Store, where we see the owner George Esposiito and look at all of their freshly made pork sausage, vast meat selection and homemade #Italianfood specialty items. We buy some of their mozzarella, ricotta and prosciutto balls, which we enjoy outside the shop.
    We then walk further down Court Street and stop to look at some vintage items outside of Yesterday's News Antiques & Collectibles and visit 2 Silhouettes on The Shade, where we not only browse through their vast selection of vintage sporting equipment, housewares, clothing and knick-knacks but also go inside this packed from floor to ceiling shop.
    We also visit Blue Gold Records, an eclectic vinyl record shop carrying a wide selection of quality used vinyl, where you can also enjoy freshly-roasted Brooklyn coffee. We help support this independently-owned record shop by purchasing one of their t-shirts.
    We end the day with a visit to Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain on Henry Street where we go inside this lovingly restored 1920s apothecary shop which has been turned into a modern day soda fountain. We look around its gorgeous interior filled with antique pharmacy cabinets filled with medicine bottles, a 20-foot marble soda fountain counter with red swirling stools, penny-tiled floors, and watch egg creams , ice cream sundaes and milkshakes being made by "soda jerks". We purchase a vanilla egg cream which we take outside to enjoy with Hudson on one of their pink benches.

    Hey everyone! We are husband-and-wife architectural/interior photographers based in NYC. We started our video channel to act an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small independently-owned businesses and the unique character these shops add to the streets and neighborhoods of New York City.
    In our videos we will showcase portraits of storefronts and shop owners in New York City & capture moments of city life that capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighborhoods. We also bring our dog, Hudson along whenever we can.
    We made it our mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when we began to notice the alarming rate at which they were disappearing. Our critically acclaimed books include “STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York”, “New York Nights”, “STORE FRONT II- A History Preserved” and “Broken Windows-Graffiti NYC”.

    I grew up in this neighborhood and lived with my parents until 1980. I love it there, one day the owner came out of the basement of Court Pastry with a painters' bucket of cannoli cream. I wanted to jump in head first. Best rice balls are from Esposito, people go to Union Street, they don't make them the way the original owner made them. Moretti was the best. For lack of a better word, they're balls. Farmacy, pistachio cardamom ice cream. Red Velvet Twinkies.

    I grew up in Carroll Gardens and Esposito's is the best! Though I'd have to say that Mazzola Bakery on 192 Union Street makes THE BEST Lard bread! It flies off the shelves and is probably the most addictive thing on the planet. Next time you're in that neighborhood you guys should hit them up! Definitely worth it.

      Kiss_My_Ascot we are glad you enjoyed watching our video and we can’t thank you enough for the recommendation to try the lard bread from Mazzola Bakery! We must try if it’s the best ob the planet 🌍! Are you also a fan of Court Pastry as we really love their cannolis and Italian ices!

We will definitely have to plan on visiting Mazzola Bakery and Monteleone on our next trip to the neighborhood. Sam’s was also closed for summer vacation when we visited so we can get a pizza from there too! 😀

      I grew up there on Clinton street between 1st and 2nd place........and as a child i went to 142......when i lived there it was 95% Italian..today it's about 15%............also that quint coffee shop on Henry street was originally a candy store...and the next door was a fish store......Gasper zerilli owner of court pastry finally sold the shop to new people....(lets see if they can keep up on the quality )..i remember when those pastry cost only a quarter...as for D'AMICO coffee it was original located on Henry st and 1st place and own by a guy I knew called FRANK....before it moved to court st.......I knew Buddy Scotto, and yes he was the person that change Carroll Gardner.....some say for the better....I'm not to sure about that.....and no..buddy did not make the neighborhood fix up their gardens..the Italians always took pride in their gardens....as for EAST ONE..I remember it as the Red Rose and before that.. it was the Gloria pizzeria...best pizzeria in Brooklyn made by a guy called RED.....as you pass the store called Running Wild Toys..i remember it as the STUMBLE inn bar..where they would locked the doors up at night and have a stripper.......that Dunking Donuts with the garden was original a bar called the DUCK INN where they had illegal card games down the cellar......also that Carroll Garden flower shop he was passing..the guy sitting in front of the shop was a part owner and he die recently.....that CVS drug store was at one time a large food market..and before that, it was a movie theater called the Gloria own by Buddy Scotto's father......and that church ST Mary's where Al Capone was marries.....it's also the church where I got married....well...I hope I filled in some gaps for you guys who also came from the old neighborhood.......that it for me..... by the way..who remembers playing ball in the "MILK STATION..?????

    Thank you for the great video, was pleased to see the visit to Caputo's Bake Shop, my aunt worked the counter there from some time in the 50's until she passed away in the 90's I think she was well known in the area, my uncle drove the delivery van, bringing Italian bread to many of the local Italian restaurants in the area, got to visit there a few times as a kid, brings back many pleasant memories.

    The cannoli shell isn't baked, it's fried.

    • @JamesandKarla
      @JamesandKarla  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Side Tony yes so sorry. But this bakery definitely makes their own shells by hand rolling out each one individually as we have watched them do that. Some bakeries mAke their own cannoli cream but purchase the cannoli shells in bulk from a supplier.

    • @sidetony6052
      @sidetony6052 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JamesandKarla yes, even in Sicily a lot of bakeries order the shells from a factory. Which is strange because it doesn't take that long to make.
