Yes, I know he was from Cincinnati. Here are the facts of Phil’s involvement with the Afro Kings: Phil first came to Düsseldorf, where apparently his sister was a singer at the Düsseldorf Opera House. I had met the Afro Kings and George Hutchinson a couple years earlier, when I worked as a bar pianist at the Ambassador Hotel in Monrova (Liberia, West Africa) I loved their American Soul Music and African Highlife and as a result, we we were all travelling to Germany on an iron ore freighter a few month later. Germans loved the AFRO KINGS and all went well. While touring through Germany, this stranger, Mr “Phil Soul Walker” stepped on stage one day and sang his heart out with us. We already had an amazing frontman who delivered an amazing James Brown inspired dance and vocal show. However we did love Mr Phil Soul Walker and he joined the band and toured with us for some 18 month, mainly through US army clubs. Well, it was a very strange situation! Here I was, in the middle of Germany in NCO clus, blowing my King Curtis inspired sax to a crowd of some 100 Afro American G.I.s and I loved it when the guys in the front seats were calling out to me “Blow your horn, brother!” Yes, it was strange, here in the middle of Germany, my Austrian trumpet player Hubert Grillberger, me and a couple of german waitresses where the only white people in this club in the middle of Germany. (segregation? definitely entertainment segregation, because of different musical taste?yes!) And our Phil Soul Walker keeps on running across the stage in front of us with a special long microphone lead (no cordless microphones in those days :-) We even met Lou Rawles who also toured the US clubs. After about 18 month, I was offered a very lucrative 6 month contract in Salou, a beach resort near Tarragona, Spain. Phil didn’t want to come a long to Spain and went back to the US. We toured Spain and recorded a single in Barcelona until the Afro Kings dissolved in 1970. I joined the Spanish group “Máquina!” A few years later, I lived back in Munich, I saw a concert poster one day. “My god this is Phil!”. I bought tickets and there he was walking across the stage in front of the Detroit Spinners. I got a big hug when I went behind the stage and we had a great time together at the hotel bar. Never saw him again until decades later I saw him on TH-cam. That was after I “had been moved” to Australia by my home sick Australian wife in 1980. R.I.P Phil. It looks like George Hutchinson and me are the only survivors. We are still musically active. George is singer of a Blues Band in Tarragona, Spain and I am the bandleader of BIG BAND OBSESSION. R.I.P Phillippe Wynn
Fascinating story Peter. I visualized some of what you were describing. It plays like a movie. The Afro Kings sounds like a legend in itself. For instance how did you end up in Liberia?
Phillipe Wynne was definitely their best lead singer(not say to the others which could all sing lead were slouches) he just had that special and unique voice and his voice had soul and that special ummmmmffff! I think if he stayed with the group and waited a little longer he would've really made it solo
Sorely missed one of my generations great soul singers , when he went solo end of mighty love live , without band or rest of group , was something to see , amazing
I did please stop asking me. Will post either tomorrow or later today. I also stopped by house where he was killed. No house and Donald doesn't have headstone
Am I reading the message correctly? The headstone was purchased in 2021 by a fan and one of his sons?? His sons both died many years ago: Alvarez by drive-by shooting, and Emmanuel by drowning. Did he have a third son that we didn’t know about?

Very great performer, God bless his soul
So thankful someone paid for a headstone for him. When I found out he was buried in an unmarked grave I was shocked and saddened by it.
I went looking for his gravesite and unfortunately a headstone had not yet been placed there

I'm a huge fan. When he passed that was a sad day. If I were rich I would build a mausoleum for this dude
He was from Cincinnati,Ohio. He later moved to Detroit. He had family in the Detroit area.

this is the info the grounds keeper told me
@@kevingrace945 Findagrave does not have this photo of his grave. Thank you for this video. My favorite Soul/R&B group along with the Four Tops.
Two of his sons passed away.
One died drowning to save someone else in 2001,
and the other was shot during a drive-by in 1999.
well it was some family member that approved the headstone with the fan. The grounds keeper told me it was his son that approved it.
