    I'm a local, too. I was shocked to see how quickly the level was climbing on that pole, near the end of the video. No wonder people get into trouble driving across flood-waters. The problem is, the dam can't spill until it's near the top. We needed a dam that can spill at a lower level so this doesn't happen. It wasn't designed for the current climate conditions. We need a land-bridge, from Richmond to the level where the shops are, at North Richmond. It doesn't have to be very high. The people who use the Windsor Bridge could go via Richmond to get across, via Kurmond and Terrace Road. It would only add few minutes to their journey. They should have done that instead of raising the Windsor Bridge, which goes into the low areas where the Turf Farms are. Stupid choice. They created a bridge into flood-waters.

    • @rhyswoodman6781
      @rhyswoodman6781 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree totally. As the protesters were saying Windsor Bridge needed a bypass not a bloody higher bridge where the approach is still the same flood height. They copped so much stick and abuse from angry motorist driving past yelling 'build a bridge and get over it!' To them I say 'find your bridge and get over it'. 😆

      @@malcolmden3357 I get upset for the people in Pitt Town and Wilberforce etc whose homes are ruined. I can't imagine the misery of having to leave your home, in which you've invested your life-savings, with your kids, then come home and sweep out the mud, knowing it's probably permanently ruined and plummetted in value - particularly in Sydney's ridiculous property market. As you say, businesses are heavily affected. This is our community and I care what happens to it. I love the Hawkesbury. Luckily I bought in a higher area. I almost have survivor guilt. It's ridiculous that there is a huge housing development at North Richmond, near Grose Vale, when this is happening all the time. The lady in the Chinese restaurant said that they have rented a house so that their employees have somewhere to stay when they can't get home, so they can stay open. Last time this happened the Chemist was re-stocking via BOAT, so they could keep serving the community. These politicians are utterly incompetent and seem determined to do nothing to avoid spending money or making decisions. I think many still labour under the illusion that men, who make it into high positions, must be reasonably competent. I learned, during 20 years in the Police, that this is absolutely not the case. This is going to get worse before it gets better. Sorry. Rant over. ;D

I'm now in WA but grew up in Windsor, lived out on Wolseley Road and corner of Old Stock Route Rd and was isolated in the 1961 floods which reached 14.91, never reached that since but looks like this might. We had Turkeys and moved them out into the pens with tarps over, and moved furniture into the turkey sheds of people who got flooded, saved their contents, the rail line got washed away. Dropping the dam by 18% in height reduces the water supply by 40% as it's V shaped , raising the dam to maintain current levels is a logical solution.

    • @sirbarryvee-eight6485
      @sirbarryvee-eight6485 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Raising the dam will help - sometimes.
      It is possible to have a major rain event that will flood the Hawkesbury Nepean floodplain without opening the dam. Enough rain around Menangle and Camden, South Creek and Eastern Creek, the Grose and Erskine Creek catchments and you have a flood. Add to that an incoming tide and anything coming down the Colo which slows the floodplain draining.
      Raising the dam will mitigate a lot of floods, but it won't solve the problem.
      Not sure why, with the weather forecasting being so accurate, they cannot lower the dam to 85% capacity ahead of a major rain event to build in that capacity.

    That was a pretty amazing video, to see how fast that water came up, I'm in Brisbane & luckily in one of the safe spots, well actually luck had nothing to do with it, one of the 1st questions I asked about the house, before I bought was, " did the 74 floods affect it ?". One of the most spectacular/destructive things about the last floods was watching the storm water back up & blow the solid steel covers completely off & maintain enough pressure to form a water spout 1/2 a meter to a meter high indefinitely.

    I am absolutely heartbroken for everyone back there in the Hawkesbury region, I just can’t believe this has happened three times this year. I went to Richmond High from Yr 8 to Yr 11 in the ‘90s and I don’t remember the North Richmond or Windsor bridges ever go under.
    I just looked up the historical flood data and there were no significant floods of the Hawkesbury-Nepean between 1992 & 2020, surely we had big rain events back in the 90s as well?
    Anyway, thanks for your videos Aaron, it keeps me updated with what’s going on and I can show my kids, it’s hard with snippets on the news and living in the country. Please stay safe mate!

      The state government announced funding for a new bridge at North Richmond a year ago. The federal government then announced the same thing because, you know, election. The funding is there but by the time they do the mapping, the feasibility, the engineering, the environmental reports, buy the land, get embroiled in valuation disputes, resolve the valuation disputes, realise the funding was diverted due to a greater need and the project being delayed, refund the project, move the greenies out of the way of the bulldozers, get the thing built (like the Northern Road and M4 overpass which took 4 years) and cut the ribbon - I'm hopeful but I won't be holding my breath.
      At least at North Richmond the approaches to the bridge are above the flood level and the bridge will actually serve a purpose.

Reeled in lost a few fish and ended up being swept into the ocean, smacked into a few logs of shrubs, she held up alright, lucky i had the safety ores, the outboard moter was cut with water. It literally flooded and i had to drop it off the dingy. Started bowing at the back nearly fell off a few times. Yeah these flash floods can be dangerous. Be careful folks.

    I was taught by my father at a young age that you “never live in low lying areas” and especially on the “output side” of a dam!!
    I have bought and sold quite a few homes over many years and prior to living anywhere, l would study the topography of the land before l ever bought a home or even rented. I would never ever live anywhere near any water courses, be it creeks, rivers or the ocean. Those that do, are at the mercy of flooding. Hopefully people may learn from this, those that don’t, will pay a very high price, as we are seeing happening time and time again.
    Councils that approve land for building homes in these “low lying areas” which will be flooded from rainwater, overflowing dams, rivers, creeks and the ocean have a lot to answer for. People need to realise that councils are out to make money from ratepayers and they are not in the least bit concerned if you get flooded out. Stop trusting these corrupt authorities and start thinking for yourselves.

    Raise the dam wall. It's that simple. There will be times of drought during coming El Nino years. That means a 14-15m higher wall will be providing that much more water supply to tide us through the hot, dry times too.

    Is the water raising or dropping? Watch the debris...the trash, sticks, and logs. If they are in a line down the middle of the stream, it's raising. If they are spread out, it dropping.

    This isn't the new normal Aaron, because it will keep getting worse every year. We keep expanding fossil fuels, land-clearing, and expanding development for housing immigrants and all the infrastructure that goes with it.

      It's nothing to do with climate change.
      The ground is saturated and can't absorb any water.
      Water from Warragamba dam comes from the Cox's River on the other side of the mountains.

      gday pete awesome to here from you, it is a lot to do with man made climate change when this water hits the flood plain because we have put over 20 meters of fill in places like Marsden park on the flood plain to flood proof the houses they should not be building giving the flood plain less coverage which means the water backs up where it could not before. it is catastrophic what developers have been allowed to do and not one extra treatment works has been built for the 2 million people that have migrated to Sydney

      Love your videos Aaron.
      A fair bit of the timber would be because of bank erosion I think.
      We back onto a creek and when it does come up a bit trees fall over.
      A week after the bushfire in the Perth Hills we had a flood but fortunately it only flooded part of the house yard.
      It was the highest in over 20 years according to our old landlord.
      I miss the bass and the fishing in the Parramatta River and the harbour.
      Stay safe @Windsor Bait and Tackle

      @@WindsorBaitAndTackle Not sure where Pete's initial comment has gone, where he said it wasn't climate change.
      We need to stop immigration as it is impacting in so many ways that make these weather events even worse. Increasing population is only good for economists and capitalists, not any good for the environment, nor for us. Good ethics and morals will lose though, and things will just keep getting worse. My biggest bitch at the moment is these immigrants will be taking homes away from aussies and making more live life in tents and cars.

    Three hundred year floods in a year. If that is the new Oz real estate insurance norm, then I humbly advise a certain relocation to somewhat higher grounds, with better elevation. The continental Oz floodplains are exactly that and are the geophysical reason why virtually every major and minor country city throughout our fair continent is perennially susceptible to the new climactic norm, regional rainfall wipeouts. Sadly it is only a matter of time and low lying floodplain geo locality, before each redoubtable community endure their very own Hawkesbery one in a century, new norm localised rainfall catastrophe. Remarkable to watch the surge closeup, one hour of sustained rainfall further up the catchment. Thankyou cobber, for a wet day in your paradise lost. Rory, Tasmania
