Maserati Quattroporte 4.7 V8 Sport GTS review. Best sounding 4-door ever?

  • The 2012 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS was the final and best version of the 5th edition Quattroporte. Powered by a 450bhp NA 4.7litre V8 built by Ferrari, it sounded like no other 4-door saloon and could well be the sounding 4-door of all time.

As Harry drives down the street there is a older gentleman unlocking his Bentley flying spur. He sees the quattroporte and stares at it like he has just seen a supermodel. You can almost see the drool. Priceless.

I had wanted a Quattroporte for 10 years. After doing my research, the best advice I got from a Maserati specialist was "Buy the best one you can afford". So, I had my heart set on this very model, the rare Sport GTS (only 53 RHD examples are registered in the UK). I had test-driven a couple of different cars and 24 hours after this very video came out, I tracked the dealer down but this black on black version was sold that very same day for £34,500 (The Sport GTS cost new with options £118,000) and have bottomed out as far as depreciation goes. They are getting very collectable and sought after and so rarely come onto the market, but I found my perfect car, in the spec, I would have chosen had I ordered it new from the Maserati Factory - Grigio Granito body (Gun Metal Grey) with contrasting Marrone Corniola (Chestnut leather) interior. I have owned mine for 8 months now and every journey feels special with a real sense of occasion, whether thundering along a great driving road, or sat with my family with a boot full of luggage in a traffic jam in the rain, the cabin feels (and sounds) like a private jet. It is also one of those rare machines, like an Aston, that people will hear you coming and they smile and wave and chat to you when you park. It's not "flash" and you never see another one of the roads, the exclusivity and being different is part of the attraction, along with that Ferrari V8 and the most addictive soundtrack from those monster exhausts. Audi and BMW drivers in my experience are the only ones that tend to get upset when you leave them for dust with a blip of the throttle. In the 8 months, I have had mine, I have driven 6,000 miles and it hasn't missed a beat. My only observation is that the mighty Maserati is prone to eat rear tyres, as I just replaced a pair after only 4,000 miles of 'spirited' driving and 20" Pirelli P-Zeros aren't cheap, but it's cheaper (and more exciting) than a crack habit! However, I just paid to have the wheel alignment checked by laser today, which is well worth paying £60 for, as mine was off by 4mm which explains the uneven wear on the rear. If you are thinking of buying one, do - as you'll always regret it if you don't and they will never be better value than they are now. Just do your homework, pay to get it looked over or buy from a specialist and buy the best one you can afford for years of motoring pleasure ahead.

Hi Grant, spotted your comment and hope you're still enjoying the car. I've heard that the reason you get quicker tyre wear is because the stability control and traction control are slightly applying the brakes during your spirited drives. There's not much you can do about it unless you wanted to turn it all off, but at least you now know the cause.

    • @tonylau5713

@@PutSomeDsonThatBlink or is it spirited drives lose traction which causes tyres wear, wanting to take off fast needs grip. Stability and traction applying brake causing wear doesn't make sense, and reason stability and traction is being applied is due to grip.

As a young lad in the mid 70's a schoolfriends grandfather once picked him up in a Maserati Bora.
My dad had a Ford Anglia at the time. That Maserati looked like it'd come from out of space!
I've been in love with them ever since.
I had a work accident in 1998 which left me paralysed and in a wheelchair.
I looked at one of these when they came out and was heartbroken to find my wheelchair wouldn't fit in the boot.
I settled for a Mercedes e63 amg estate instead and have been running them ever since (except a year in a v10 rs6 which I didn't like).
The mercs are quicker and have a great sound, but nowhere near as nice as this and the 4.2 maserati.
Everytime a new maserati comes out (except the suv which does nothing for me), off I go to the Maserati showroom to see if my wheelchair will fit and come away heartbroken again.
I will have my Maserati one day, I will, I will!

Hi Harry, I have the Awards Edition Quattroporte Sport GTS - only 126 made - and its right hand drive with just 15,000 miles. So rare. And I adore it.
By the way, it was fitted with Skyhook at the factory not Bilstein in the awards spec, which is much better version than on the Granturismo- as I have owned one so can feel the difference. The awards edition is a very different experience to the standard Sport GTS , which surprised me when I tested it. It still has the wonderful sound but feels softer and more controlled - and better for it.
This is my 4th Quattroporte - a 4.2, a 4.2 executive GT, 4.7 sport GTS with Bilstein shocks, and now the awards edition. Also owned a 4.7 Granturismo and the a 3.0S Ghibli, which was horrid - which is why I went back to naturally aspirated V8.
Your review was spot on, exactly explained the the ownership experience - especially the more practical usability compared to the Granturismo.
Most people are put off by the possible costs, but I have to say, not much has gone wrong in any I have owned - and I buy 3 year warranty packages for added protection.
One thing you missed probably was that in ‘sport’ mode the gearbox mapping is different, blips the throttle on braking, holds on to gears longer and releases more power to the throttle movements, also holding onto gears longer. Stays in 5th at cruise for better response at high speed.
One thing that is intoxicating is the pops and bangs and woofles of the exhaust on the overrun, especially if you hold on to 2nd or 3rd in manual mode.
Thank you for making my day by reviewing what I think is a modern classic and is one of the best looking cars you’ll ever see. Your are so right - the new designs of the big cars from BMW and Mercedes don’t blow you away and can’t be differentiated from their smaller siblings.
Sorry this is such a long comment - but I am a besotted enthusiast. But Finally, I know you are a fantastic driver - try the QP on a dry track as I have and experience the neutral handling that is so predictable. You’ll see how good it can be at the limit.
Love your reviews here in New Zealand where my Awards Edition is the only one in North Island - the most rare car here bar none!

I bought mine which is the S version and it is the best car I have ever owned (had a 911, XJ12, Daimler Double Six and 2 750i before) As I don’t like the new model I had the chance to buy a second same Quattroporte S last year with only 32.000 km on it in order to have spare one, this to say how much I love it. Every day I enjoy driving it and looking at it and people don’t seem to realise it is also soo old.

Harry great review of this Maserati as well as the GT. It's allways great to hear the perspective of an actual owner and someone who understands the brand and what it is striving for. As a previous owner of a qp5, 2 ghiblis and a qp6 I agree that they lost a bit of their design flair in the new version. Though I will say the qp6 brings a much needed update to the interior and makes for a fantastic daily driver while still maintaining that Maserati flair and driving dynamic.
This brand is misunderstood and many reviews knock it for maintenance and high cost without having any real experience with out outside of a 30min drive and a look at its quarks and features. Thanks for the honest review!
