I give you much credit... for being only 16i believe I heard you say? You have a great thought process and intellect, deciphering lyrics and meaning to your own opinion and thoughts. I'm 53 and enjoy your journey thru the songs I grew up and live life with, along with newer music that I really enjoy such as nightwish and other groups in metal and classic rock. Rock on sir

I love Dio Sabbath, but even I have to acknowledge that it's like a different band from Ozzy Sabbath. Honestly, this album feels as if follows more directly from Ronnie's previous album (Long Live Rock and Roll, by Rainbow) than it does the last of Ozzy's Sabbath (Never Say Die).
But Heaven and Hell is a spectacularly good album. And Tony and Geezer are always on point

Ronnie James Dio started in the 60s, singing doo wop. He was a crooner then sang rock, transitioning over the years to hard rock in the 70s and heavy metal in the 80s up to his death in 2010. More Dio-Sabbsth songs: Falling off the Edge of the World, The Mob Rules, Children of the Sea.
Rainbow with Dio: Gates of Babylon, Rainbow Eyes, Mistreated (live 1977).
Dio (the band): Last In Line, Rainbow in the Dark (live is best).
    So many more...

Falling Off The Edge has to be one of my favourite Dio led Sabbath tunes - such a slow build, then it kicks the crap out of you with that killer Iommi riff! Going to go listen to that now...
(all other suggestions are great too...)

This was a big album when it came out. Bought it while it was still warm. Black Sabbath was on its way out, tired and old, and all of the sudden came this. Relevant album for a new generation. This is the highlight of the album. That pivoting guitar solo...
Its funny how huge the difference in music scene was from 1970 to 1980. I know its all ancient history now, and its not clear anymore were dinosaurs still flying from tree to tree, but when we were at 1980, distance to 1970 was already remarkable.
    Nice reaction, as always.

Please give it a chance, it’s only one of the most iconic Metal songs in the history of Metal, that’s all. He does have a good voice, I’ll give him that, lol. Ronnie James Dio has one of the most iconic voices in Metal, his career spans his beginnings with Rainbow, then two albums with Sabbath and then his tremendous solo career. If you really want to appreciate Ronnie James Dio you really need to listen to his beginnings with Rainbow and then his solo music. I consider RJD to be one of the greatest voices in Metal history.

Regarding the lyrics on this, Ronnie's lyrical themes are remarkably consistent throughout his career. Hints of it appear in his work in Elf, but then throughout his work with Rainbow, Sabbath, and Dio his lyrics preach the same lesson over and over again:
Be strong, yes, but never complacent or overconfident, because temptation lurks around every corner.
Ronnie preaches strength not for its own sake, but as a form of vigilance against the horrors of the world, and those horrors are mostly other people who will do you harm. There's a stalwart stoicism to Ronnie's lyrics--a self-awareness not often found in popular culture.

April 14th, 1980 Iron Maiden puts out their eponymous debut album, and eleven days later on the 25th we get Heaven and Hell from Sabbath with new front man Dio. Big changes were coming for hard rock in the 1980s. Hairspray. Hairspray and spandex was coming. And guitar choreography and androgyny and MTV and chicks and leather and fire and inverted drum kits and ... yeah, the '80s were fun.

    Thanks for this
    Great song, great reaction
This song was immediately popular when it was released in 1980. I was in 10th grade, and I think this is the year heavy metal got heavier and became much more prominent in the public consciousness. A classmate of mine turned me onto this song - before I was only exposed to hard rock. In 1980 Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and acdc (Back In Black) really turned the tide toward metal, and the rest is history.

Yeah, Tony Iommi..................he's the reason I took up electric guitar. And yet, it took me 30 years to actually bother owning an SG. My main squeeze, when it comes to six strings, is a modified Telecaster. You should definitely check out more from this album. Neon Knights, Children of the Sea, Lady Evil, etc. And there's '81 Mob Rules album, also with Dio. But Bill Ward had left at this point, to be replaced on drums by Vinnie Appice. But it still has some great songs on it, including the title track, which was used in the 1981 animated film Heavy Metal. If you haven't seen it, see it................. :D

  • @4tuneagent
    @4tuneagent 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Tony Iommi is phenomenal on nearly every Sabbath song with his guitar licks.. I believe the Heaven and Hell album was the last one for the drummer, Bill Ward.. It was the chemistry between Tony, Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler, and of course Ozzy that made Sabbath so heavy and Great!.. Plug in Dio on vocals, and they're still awesome.. You obviously love great lyrics and Black Sabbath have so many... Some obscure cuts that may not get mentioned, but are very intense lyrically with great guitar work are "Dirty Women", and also "Shock Wave".. both with Ozzy and worth checking out.

  • @RedDawnRocker
    @RedDawnRocker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Daniel, there are multiple schools of thought when it comes to bands such as Sabbath, AC/DC and Deep Purple. There are the traditionalists who always believe the most well-known version of a band is the only one. There are those who grew up on a specific version of the band who love their band line-up most. There are those who believe only the recent music counts by a band. Finally, there are fans that love every version of a band due to either loyalty to the band-brand or due to deciding to view each version of the band separately and not comparatively (which, for the record, is where I fall).
I've never been one too take parts the "which lead singer/band-member is better than their later or earlier counterpart" argument. For me, Sabbath is Ozzy, Dio, Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Tony Martin on vocals. They've all had some great songs, some good songs and some not so good songs. I don't think there are really any truly bad songs (at least in my opinion) of any line-up. I always loved both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson on vocals for AC/DC. I loved all incarnations of Deep Purple from the Rod Evans days to the Ian Gillan days right through the David Coverdale/Glenn Hughes days right back into the current Ian Gillan days once again. Each tend to bring their own musical pieces to the puzzle making for an amazing aural (often ambient) vision to witness.

Hey, the producer as well as Ozzy left in 1979, Sandy Pearlman then the producer of BOC took them on and helped DIO come from Rainbow to Sabbath, he saved both bands at the same time. He set up the now Infamous "Black and Blue" tour as well. BOC hired Martin Birch for 2 albums then went and produced Iron Maiden. I saw the reformed "Heaven and Hell" band in 2010 just before he died, at the Forum in LA. Jorn Lande replaced him (the only singer that could replace him) on the European leg of the tour.

Never really got much into Sabbath, but Ronnie James Dio was one heck of a singer, despite being only 3 feet tall...in ANY of the bands he was in including his own. I always liked this tune for the ending portion when they speed it up and throw it into high gear. I always thought this song was about the duality of man...there is always going to be good people who do bad things and vice versa. The Yin & Yang...there is good and bad, good within the bad and bad within the good and humans have to accept this to understand humanity in its whole....and 5 seconds later you SAY Yin & Yang. Great minds Daniel, great minds!
"Dio is good, but he was never an Ozzy" Uhhh, DUH!!...he was DIO!!!! I have a funny story about Sabbath Bloody Sabbath...that i will try to keep short LOL. My next door neighbor who was 4 years younger returned home from shopping at the mall with his parents. Excited about a new purchase he called me to come over and check it out. He bought Sabbath Bloody Sabbath "because the cover is way cool!" Yeah, okay. So he puts the record on and lays the needle down. After about a minute after the vocals come in he says "HEY...this guy sounds just like Ozzy!!" I stared blankly at him like he just grew another head. Then I busted up and said "Who the hell do you THINK this IS??"...he had no clue. Completely amazed Ozzy did something before doing his own thing.
Great reaction and breakdown...I finally had one right LMAO!! Thanks Daniel!

This was 1980...and I was surprised too at Tony's guitar playing because he sounds so "new".....trying new things with so much freedom and energy.

Love both the Ozzy and Dio eras, they’re just different, Geezer wrote Ozzy era lyrics then Dio later. Wish Dio era lasted longer, many great songs to check out, Children of the Sea, Neon Knights, The Mob Rules or Turn Up The Night. Geezers lyrics were influenced by Vietnam War and growing up in Birmingham, an impoverished industrial town greatly affected by World War II, Tony Iommi campared to Detroit.

While I absolutely love Ozzy-era Sabbath, I have to acknowledge that Dio brought them to a whole other level, especially on this album. It’s almost like his vocals were so good the rest of the band felt like they had to step it up. It’s not my favorite Sabbath album, but’ it’s in the top three, behind Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Paranoid.

'Heaven And Hell' has always been one of my favorite Sabbath albums, for three reasons: 1) it's got the amazing Ronnie James Dio, who I never thought got to fulfill all his potential in Rainbow, 2) I saw Sabbath on this tour, and it was a transformative experience, and 3) because it totally washed the bad taste out of my mouth left by the previous three albums. In my heart, Sabbath skipped directly from 'Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath' to 'Heaven And Hell', and those other three albums are just a nasty rumor.
For Dio-era Sabbath, I recommend "Children Of The Sea", "Die Young", "The Sign Of The Southern Cross", "Voodoo" and "Country Girl".
Check out Dio's work with Rainbow before joining Sabbath, including "Stargazer", "A Light In The Black", "Catch The Rainbow", "Long Live Rock And Roll", and of course "Man On The Silver Mountain". After Sabbath with his own band, Dio, check out "Rainbow in the Dark", "Holy Diver", "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Gypsy" and "The Last In Line".

Not devil music that was the media Black Sabbath came up with there music because of their love of hammer horror films try listening to the words it helps you to understand . The media only chose to hear the word devil. I hope this helps you understand why we loved them . Try War pigs .

Lynette Reay Yes I was referring to years gone by about the term and not expressly the content meaning. We all gain wisdom with experience and end up figuring it out ourselves or not. Have a great evening Lynette.

Good job once again Daniel. Ronnie James is one of the most influential metal vocalists in rock music, much more than Ozzy who an iconic and unusual vocalist. Very few top vocalists will list Ozzy as a big influence, but RJD has left his mark. Respect to Ozzy, but Dio is a master. Listen to both live and you will here the difference. You must check out Ritchie Blackmore's music with Deep Purple & Rainbow (w/Dio). Blackmore is known for his extreme guitar playing in live performances. One of the biggest influences on rock guitarist. Many of the greats will list him high on their influences. Peace out.

Black Sabbath was great with both hard rock/metal legends Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio. They also went through some other shorter phases with other vocalists which were really great too. I don't think Sabbath ever hired a bad vocalist!

Thank you very much, a good song, I didn't like it back then that Dio became the singer on Black Sabbath. That made them sound like Richi Blackmore's Rainbow. Today I like the albums from that era of the band. Because Tony Iommy is missing two fingertips, he plays guitar with prostheses and soft strings. Good Ozzy Sabbath Songs: Black Sabbath, The Wizzard, Iron Man, Syptome of the Universe, Dio-Sabbath: Children of the Sea

Great reaction. This album has some other amazing tracks too. The whole Ozzy v Dio thing would have been avoided if the band changed its name when Dio arrived but let’s face it, if your band is named Black Sabbath, no way yer going to change it.

I consider black sabbath with Dio to be a different band (to the point that when they were doing a reunion tour they called themselves heaven and hell). Dio gave the band a different style lyric and vocal wise that comparing ozzy with him is apples to oranges.

Dio pretty much discovered his niche with this album, and didn't really deviate much from that formula for the rest of his career. His first two solo albums, Holy Diver, and Last in Line, are great. After that it's a case of diminishing returns. His work with Rainbow is his best for me. Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore plucked Dio from obscurity to front his new band, and the rest is history.

Hi Daniel. I don't know how good the other Black Sabbath albums are. The only one I have is Paranoid, but I believe it's their best.
The 3 songs every fan of Black Sabbath must know are Paranoid, War Pigs and Iron Man, but I recommend you check out the entire album. It's just a fantastic album. I've yet to hear any other Sabbath that I like as much as that album, but I've only heard a few other songs. So far I like this song, but it's not as good as the Paranoid album, imo.

If you liked the guitar on this track, check out 'Lonely is the Word', Tony Iommi's best ever guitar playing, by a mile. In fact, this is Sabbath's best ever album.

U have to look at ozzy era n Dio era as two different bands! After awhile u can appreciate it all as chapters of one band! Ozzy era was ending! How many more classic albums could really come? The last 2 w ozzy weren't the best! Dio era gave this band a recharge that it took for the next 40 yrs back n forth between singers! Tony Martin era too!
