    Why is mastodon so good? Also this album is criminally underrated, even by a lot of the eilte mastodon fanboys.

      Andrew Teller so true. a lot of it is fans that won't let go of the heavier, grunty-er days. they rock so hard though.

      I actually like this one better than OMRTS but it seems like everyone thinks it's their worst album. Blood Mountain is probably my favourite but the Hunter is great.

      Yes!! The Hunter is great & underrated for sure.

      It has some of their best acoustic-y songs. 'Round the Sun has really catchy songs, but if I had to recommend an album to someone who has never heard them, it would be Blood Mountain or Leviathan because those two sort of represent their sound well.

      @@jimjambananaslam3596 Aye, I find honestly when I pick up the acoustic, If Mastodon pops into my head to riff along with, I usually go for The Hunter. Some stuff that sounds great on acoustic. The Thickening is my go-to.

    Please please, uncle Ben. Do a video series where you teach us how to play entire mastodon songs like you did with Sultans Curse. These video help me out so much . Thank you

    This is nuts! Great video, Uncle Ben. How in the world do y'all figure out alternative/drop tunings??

    • @AS-mf7pp
      @AS-mf7pp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam Spaulding Mastodon are known for using mostly D standard or DropC

    • @DrTibbsy
      @DrTibbsy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I know they do - I just dont know how people figure out the tunings if they don't know already.

      The lowest note in the song will likely be easy to figure out, and that is usually the open top string. Most songs in metal are in a standard or drop based on that note. Also, try to listen for other open strings throughout the songs as they generally have a slightly different timbre than fretted notes.

    Brent is definitely one of the most creative and clever riffologists of our generation. And you're the man, Uncle Ben!

    I AM LAUGHING MY ASS OFF!! (no I will not use abbreviations) Love the video, thanks. The first time I heard this song I told myself "holy shit! This guy is doing a banjo roll in metal, amazing!" and Mr Hinds confirmed what I thought in a interview (I think for Guitarist magazine) where he said he was banjo player and this riff came naturally because of is banjo finger picking style. This riff is pretty easy if you ever played the Banjo. I love country music techniques, not because I like country music, but because it sounds amazing under the right circumstances. Most notably when you turn up the gain. It's a big reason I'm such a fan of John 5 and Mastadon.

    Nice! I really love Mastodon too, I have to still learn the Oblivion intro part, and the pre-chorus, similar to this in a certain way. It would be great a lesson on that :) Also the intro of Crack the Sky :)
    Rock on!

    Uncle Ben, I always had this doubt about alternate tuning. Do artist play notes learnt in standard tuning in different tuning or do they 're learn all the different shapes and positions in each different tuning. Hope my enquiry was clear.
    Thank you and love your videos.

      Caerwyn Deathwhisp there are pretty accurate tabs online and there are even some lessons of Misha and Mark of Periphery teaching it on TH-cam. I do agree that the main riff is quite tricky, very exhausting for the left hand
