    Great video... and I'm stepdad age. ;)
    Seriously though I've been teaching for 28 years and while Troy Grady's videos are excellent, your video distils the content down to 15 minutes. I've been recommending Troys videos for ages but this is my go to now because my students will now spend less time watching videos and more time practising with new information.
    Great job!
    P.S.: That tip at 8:30 is the most important for those with string crossing issues.

    Before I discovered Troy a few years back and realised what I was doing (and the theory behind two way pickslanting) it was something that naturally developed for me from learning and problem solving a load of Paul Gilbert licks. This was after years of frustration getting stuck between strings and over exaggerated hops trying to get out of them.
    Two way pickslanting also gives you a real aggressive attack/snap on upstrokes which you can hear a lot in Paul's playing, which really gives you some dynamics at hyperspeed that most players don't have.

    I've been doing 3 notes per string across 2 strings to really iron this out. (ABC DEF ABC DEF etc.) If you gradually change your pick slant, it's a lot less jarring. So during ABC, i'm gradually slanting, and by the time I get to C, i'm already prepared for the string change. Then I gradually start to change my slant after I pick the D on the second string. By the time I've made it to F, i'm ready for the string change back to A. It's dead simple once you have the muscle memory down.

    • @Ghruul
      @Ghruul 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      can this be further applied for general alternate picking? or do you need to go back to more inefficient techniques when there are string changes (like 5 notes on E string, 1 on B, 1 on E, then 5 on B again and so forth till the low E string)

  • @CompleteProducer84
    @CompleteProducer84 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Guys, as most of you know this is the real deal. I kept trying to see if it was effective by trying the 3 note per string slanting, but the constant pick slant changes weren't giving me enough of a chance to see if it was working. But the even numbered (6 note per string) exercises Ben gave us allowed me to do an entire ascending run with one slant, and an entire descending run with the opposite slant, and after 20 years of playing guitar, these runs never felt so effortless. It's definitely going to take a LOT of time to get the 3 note per string switches down, but this was a huge eureka moment.

  • @dominikh.8148

    Fantastic! I've seen Troy's stuff months ago and it really helped me a lot, had me playing UWPS as well as DWPS lines pretty safely at high speeds, but I've always had problems with using both in one lick. And then uncle Ben shows up, at my birthday even, and gives me something to practice (which I felt Troy was kind of missing out on) exactly that. Thanks man!
    One thing though... I don't get how some players manage to switch between the two slants so quickly, as in three note per string lines or this famous Paul Gilbert lick. That's just beyond me.

    • @namenotfound34
      @namenotfound34 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Switching between three notes was one of the most tedious things I have ever had to learn. I do DWPS down and sweep string changes and just switch at the very last note and pick normally starting at an upstroke. UDU change pick slant DUD, change pick direction UDU and so on It really is the most efficient way to play 3 note per string lines. Now since the string changes are swept playing that clean, as in not hearing the actual string change is extremely obnoxious as well as getting used to starting with an upstroke. Paul just forces a string change with a legato note or when he's determined to pick everything uses exclusively DWPS.

    This is what I've been trying to tell people. "Do not overshoot the string during alternate picking. These are *_electric_* guitars, you can use a tiny force to pluck the string. Let the amplifier do the work." Most players still over-rely on legato and not too much alternate picking.
    Your video close-up of your picking technique, which shows you do not overshoot the string during alternate picking, is wonderful. A Federal law should be passed requiring all guitar teachers to teach that, and show that close up, to new guitar students, because the technique is valuable.
    In the past, I've told guitarists "look at Yngwie Malmsteen's picking hand. IT DOESN'T MOVE when he is alternate-picking. He did the right thing, he forced himself to:
    1) become aware of how much he was over-shooting the string during alternate picking
    2) decided "all the time I waste when I pluck the string hard, and over-shoot it, requiring I move my hand to bring the pick all the way back to the string, is burning time, and slowing my picking down"
    3) "I will focus on keeping the pick *_right next to the string_* at all times"
    I did this as an experienced player and my left (fretting) hand then also had to adjust, to keep up with how much more quickly I could get notes to sound during alternate picking
    THANK YOU for this video, if guitarists knew how valuable this technique is, they'd drop everything to fix their alternate picking over-shooting issues.
    There are two famous players who showcase what is possible (besides you and Yngwie):
    1) the solo for the Whitesnake song "Here I go again" - the very tail-end of the solo is enabled by not overshooting the string during alternate picking
    2) the tail-end of this George Lynch live instrumental that comes right before the live version of "Paris is Burning" - when guitarists heard how fast and accurate that final ascending alternate-picked run was, it was new. Most players relied on cliche' guitar techniques in those days. Here is George from the live version in Germany: th-cam.com/video/L8RHKNyvYuc/w-d-xo.html

    Coincidentally, knowing this helps with my beginner problem of anchoring my wrist. When I started guitar my right hand just stuck itself into an upward pickslanting position by overdoing it and fully tilting the wrist into the body of the guitar, anchoring it. Now I've just got to rotate my hand and learn downward pickslanting.
    Thanks for the lesson, Ben!

    At 12:04 you start talking about the "somewhat curved motion". I tried that method for a month or so and I agree that it does have a speed limit. However, I started doing it because I saw it on the Lisa X interview from Troy Grady. For some reason she is able to pull it off with high speed, but it looked like she sacrificed a little accuracy at high speeds. Although it didn't turn out for me, it did prepare me for two way pick slanting by getting my hands used to switching back and forth. Thanks for the informative lesson, great stuff!

    Been digging your lessons for years Uncle Ben, thanks. Just a respectful heads-up... beyond Troy Grady's youtube channel there is a series of his lessons called "Masters of Mechanics" where he establishes roughly three main picking styles. There is "cross-picking" which is the curve that you explain which, while efficient, does have a speed limit. There is "two-way pickslanting" which is used by Paul Gilbert for example and you explain very well in the video. There is also however "downward pickslanting" used by the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai. Here, you consistently slant your pick downwards. While ascending, if you end on a downstroke, you "swipe" through the next highest string as if it wasn't even there and then begin on the new string with an upstroke. While descending, you use pull-offs to ensure that you leave each string on an upstroke. Cheers!

  • @nvab90
    @nvab90 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Ben, awesome video. I took your advice with filming my own picking motions and learned that I had inadvertently been doing a version of downward and upward slanting when sweep picking. It's interesting that the minute I realized this it became harder to actually slant the pick. I think the our psychological resistance to change our sloppy habits is half the battle in our quest to improve our technique. Keep doing what you're doing man!

  • @SDesWriter
    @SDesWriter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Between watching Troy's videos and watching your coverage of the topic. I changed my picking style and it changed my playing life. It's not just the speed increase, but the accuracy is life-altering. I can play slow songs so much more articulately and accurately with very little effort. In the last year I've learned at least 15 songs I previously thought were far beyond anything I'd ever do and I'm finding it easier and easier to do quickly.
    I can't help but wonder how different my playing life would have been if I knew this 30 years ago.

    • @cpamiseso
      @cpamiseso ปีที่แล้ว

      Pardon but why we need to change the slanting angle? I must be doing it unconsciously, but I haven't noticed how I play yet.

    • @SDesWriter
      @SDesWriter ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cpamiseso I'm not sure that everyone has to, but I can tell you for my own playing that I went from two decades of trying to get faster and more accurate and completely failing to being able to play almost flawlessly as fast as my hand will move is a matter of less than a year using this technique.
      If you watch his full video he tries to explain why the slant technique works better than just moving your hand side-to-side, but I can't speak to the physics of what he's saying. I can only tell you that I went from an almost completely legato player someone picking Vinnie Moore, Yngwie, George Lynch, and anyone else I've tried pretty much flawlessly doing it exactly how he's describing. It just makes everything easier and more repeatable.

    Best video out there on R.H. technique, in my opinion. Seen lots of them.
    Also, cracking me up. “Find your sister, tell her I said hi.” 😂

    I’d found other explanations of this really confusing but you explained it with so much clarity so thanks! I have arthritis so practising (and guitar in general) is a bit tough, but understanding this has helped clarify things a lot, so thanks!!! Subscribed!

    Thanks for the lesson Ben. This is so incredibly helpful. I'm just learning about pickslanting and watching your videos as well as Troy Grady's.

    Those cracking the code series... really making amazing guitar playing less mysterious! What I keep doing is... when downward slanting... whenever I need to change strings on a down stroke... I end up just sweeping into the next note and continuing downward slants... I don't seem to find as many uses for the upward slant.

    Hi Ben, İ watch Troy's video too but his video's too compicated for me. But you explained these up, down and combined pickslanting is so simple. Whole thing is protect the same picking angle and avoid the stay between strings. This really helps Me and thank you sincerely.
