From what I've seen, in a scenario like this, you can displace a lot of the bubbles/air pockets with vibration. It's really effective for getting the resin into all those little shell spaces. It did turn out great, for all it fought you.

My thoughts: This is a lovely vase. I love the way it looks, so delicate and the shade of colour is very beautiful. I figure that those curving shells probably trap a lot of bubbles of air and that’s why it bubbled so much. I wonder if putting it under pressure to cure rather than using a vaccuum would have worked better OR vaccuum pressure first to discharge bubbles and THEN pressure to cure to make the remaining bubbles shrink to minicule size would work? I also wonder if those shells have a waxy bloom on them naturally and that’s why there was trouble with the resin not sticking very well. If you ever try again I would suggest rinsing and agitating those shells in a cleaner like naptha or acetone and letting them dry well before using them. You could also try using a vibrating table or similar when adding the resin to attempt to get rid of as many bubble as possible and using a resin that was very runny to give as much help as possible to getting the bubbles to rise out of the resin/shell mix. I love the attempt and think you did as well as you could have under the circumstances but I wish you would try again too because you would have learned a lot from this attempt. I know I did.

The Pohl Barn Productions it would be fascinating to use different types of nut shells, too. Walnuts aren't as nice to eat as pistachios, but the shells would be great in resin - perhaps crushed to thumbnail size pieces first.
For getting dust out of the shells, I'd start by shaking them in a sieve, preferably outdoors on a reasonably windy day, and then simply wash them.warm water with detergent would get that waxy bloom off them, and then just rinse well and leave them to dry in a sieve.

Thoughts: Oven toast the shells. Mix shells into slow set liquid resin, letting air pockets be gently stirred out. Then fill the form with the mix. Turn a lid out of the foam. Or send the foam to me to play with!!! Or better yet, send it to Z. H. to turn. Still, your determination to see it through to a good final form says a lot.

Hey, you stole my idea! Looks great. My attempt failed as the resin was old and did not cure! Eating more pistachios and saving the shells!

The pistachio shells give a great effect, almost classical in their appearance and looks as if it would be an attractive vase.

Those shells really made a cool effect. Great color match, too. And I really appreciate your showing mistakes and how to fix them and how you approach a project.

Really love the effects of the shells. Like the colours too. I love that you repaired and carried on. I hate the amount of waste some turners make and just throw away so much good materials and items that break. They still carry the work of the maker. Fantastic save on the bottom. Good looking vase by the end. Thank you for sharing it.

I used pistachio shells for a resin project and like you I said several colorful metaphors. I redid it for the second time and as I poured the resin I instantly realized what the problem was and why this pour wasn't going to be any better. Salt dust. The shells are covered in salt dust! So I washed and dried them and it was so much better! The next time I used them I boiled them in dyed water and they were not only green and red (I did 2 pots for Christmas colors) but all the little stuff caught in the shells fell out AND they were dust free so the resin stuck beautifully!

Hey Doug, great job, beautiful work. Love seeing those mishaps too and how you work around them. Just getting my equipment together to start casting and pistachio shells where on my list to do. Thanks to you and Nick Zammeti's videos and others you two have directed all of us to, I feel I won't have as many failures.
