      I legit did a wood burning and added some colored pencil so I was researching the best way to seal it that wouldn’t ruin it. Epoxy resin seemed to be the best option. I now know about a bunch of tools I didn’t know existed. I have been inspired to encase entomology in wood projects. I want to include electrical components. Make weird dioramas. As much as I hate the internet…it does have an ability to put exuberance into you like nothing else short of being in love maybe.

    Beautiful result! 💜 It seems like you avoided all the problems I was talking about in my other comment, by cleaning it out so thoroughly then stabilizing it first. Thanks again for pointing it out to me.
    Just wanted to add (though you probably know this already) that the caps, the white parts over the cells is a type of silk that the larvae produce to seal themselves in as they're metamorphosising into the adult wasps, in the same way that a butterfly does in a chrysalis. What I love is that in some nests you can see bands of colour from different wood sources that the wasps have used to build the envelope,. It's such a fascinating system of how these colonies work.

    • @minagica
      @minagica ปีที่แล้ว

      I was trying to find your other comment, I'm trying to understand why the nest needed stabilizing when it was going to go inside more resin - as well as what happened to the resin that was left over (and got yellow from the nest)

    • @JustAnotherBuckyLover
      @JustAnotherBuckyLover ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@minagica The other comment was on a different video, which is why you can't find it. The reason it needs to be stabilised is that a) it's a very delicate and fragile structure and b) it's full of air and gunge from having a bunch of wasp larvae growing inside it (along with their waste matter etc - basically larvae poop). By stabilising it first, you draw the stabilising resin into the structure, which strengthens it and makes it less likely to be damaged or misshapen, reduces the likelihood of air bubbles ruining the casting, and makes sure that all that muck doesn't end up in the casting resin and turning it yellow, murky and turbid because it has a bunch of particles floating in it.
      Resin that ends up all full of gunk and inadvertently yellowed is going to be of little to no use, in most cases, because usually, you want to see the object inside. It just depends on how bad it is as to if you can complete the project.
      But the Tl; Dr is that stabilising resin isn't the same as the epoxy resin that it gets set in, so they have different purposes.

    Lol, when you shaved down the epoxy resin and it came out in strings, it reminded me of those cans of silly string, it just covered you like spider webbing. You are extremely gifted and I liked your lamp project.

    Awesome!! I am always so amazed by people who can blend so many talents/skills into their work (in this project alone: woodturning and woodworking, welding and electrical knowledge, an artist’s eye and steady hand). I will hopefully be starting college (if COVID gets better) in the fall learning architecture. I have tons of visual arts experience, but now I want the technical and mechanical knowledge so I can make 3D projects like this!

    I really like the way you text everything you utilized in making your projects. I've seen other instructional videos that don't do that. It's like people who don't want to give out their carefully-guarded recipes.
