  • I often get questions about outdoor pool tables. What are the down-sides to owning one. Well, I'll tell you... they're MUCH more expensive to maintain and they need service more frequently than indoor tables.
Follow along with this video series to learn how I overhaul this outdoor pool table and get it back to playing condition.

They do. But, they're almost all crap! And, they're a PITA to work on!

@@CreativeRestorations @@CreativeRestorations Get well Soon.. This video you have done is great. The pool table is the James DeWolf PooL Table. It is a horrible design, and costs $20K-$22k. Everything about it is wrong. I am happy someone else put it out there ;)
We have had to fix, and rebuild several here in the NY area. Our family does build a great product down in Florida - Gameroom Concepts Unlimited (no wood or particle board). You've gotta try it..

If it saves anyone a search, the James De Wulf tables are an expression of an artist who fell in love with concrete. His website mentions a special version for outdoor use, but it seems to be of little difference (1500 pounds each).

Hello Mr. Jiles! This morning I was having a TH-cam discussion with someone who bought a DPT outdoor pool table in England, and my main question was how the design of outdoor tables was different than indoor ones (and what they looked like internally). All he offered was that they're made of marine plywood. So after a year of pondering, I just came up with a search for "Outdoor Pool Table Design", and you popped-up!
I have a Global coin-op 8-footer in my backyard (abandoned) tennis court, and I've built a rolling shelter to protect it from the elements here north of Seattle. Although I'm pretty good at finding $100 used barboxes on Craigslist, I'm wondering if my "indoor" table is bound for failure. I wonder about such things as whether keeping out rain is just as good as a heavy, sealed cover; and whether the "floor" of the box is aiding me in preventing moisture from affecting the internal structures. I might even devise an internal heater....
I heartily encourage you to continue with parts 2-? of your videos, and I look forward to seeing an under-the-slate shot.

My original plan was to do the final video of the outdoor table last week. But, unfortunately, both my wife and I have come down with Covid. So, that put everything on the back-burner until we're over it.
You'll get to see a lot more than just the under shot of that table. We have to completely take it apart and re-level it and recover it. You'll definitely want to see that video. I'll be letting people know what type of cloth goes on an outdoor table (and it isn't standard cloth!).
Personally, I don't like the way any manufacturer makes their outdoor tables. Every one of them uses wood. And, wood ALWAYS ends up rotting. If I were designing an outdoor table, EVERY metal part would be stainless steel and every part that they currently use wood on, I would use UHMW (it's a soft plastic) so it won't rot.
Coin-op tables are fine for outdoor use if you don't mind replacing them every so often. They aren't designed for the repeated changes in humidity or having standing water on them.

@@CreativeRestorations Well, get well quickly! I found one site, outdoorpooltables.com for Gameroom Concepts, which shows them making all-aluminum tables. Do you think there are manufacturers that build with wood AND expect them to not be covered (like in a swimming pool)? I cover mine all the time but it's not an airtight cover (my "rolling shelter"), but I would think the designers would assume humans make mistakes, or their covers blow off. So when you mention standing water, I would think the innards would have to all be unlevel, like I said. Looking forward to having you and your vids back!

How closely does Sunbrella play like felt on an indoor pool table? Wondering if I should buy an outdoor table but concerned it plays so differently that it’s not good for practicing. Thanks.

I'll be doing more shoe and leather videos in the future. Right now, though, I'm trying to concentrate on getting my pool table knowledge out there so others can benefit from it.
Pool tables have been my forte for almost 30 years. So, there's a lot there to share! But, again, I'll be doing more shoes and leather in the future. Wanna see me make a set of leather pockets for a pool table? That's a video I've got planned for the near future!

@@CreativeRestorations I would definitely love to see a video on making new pockets. The leather pockets on my Brunswick Liberty are going to need replacement as part of its restoration. Although I have a feeling that this is going to require a leather sewing machine like I see in the background of some of your videos...
