Would like to share with you what I do. I use a crochet hook to pick stitches as you showed ,3 then skip 1, but I then do a single crochet stitch to each one. After 10 stitches I transfer them to my knitting needle. I continue as needed by the project. It can be a little finicky with the transferring but it works. This also eliminates that bump. Thank you so much for all your expert info that I’ve learned from you.

Had seen this in Turkish / Russian / Hindi. They've used a piece of scrap yarn in contrast colour while picking up stitches first. Makes it foolproof to pick up on the other side
That's a good idea. If I understand correctly, you won't see the contrasting colour.

I've not explained it correctly.
A contrasting yarn is held at the back of the work while picking up stitches and is woven into the back. This helps to see the stitches while picking them up from the back. After picking the stitches from the back, the contrast yarn is pulled out.. So not visible at all. I'll post a link to the video.. That should make things clear

Hi Hema. I've tried this method, but I find it quite finicky because that piece of yarn constantly gets in the way. Cable of a circular needle works better, but is still awkward. It is easier and more straightforward to pick up the second set of stitches after we make the first mini-band.
@@10rowsaday yes, I think your method looks easier, however I worry that I may miss a stitch when picking up later. since it will not be as visible in the same color.
I've done this technique on 3 sweaters earlier and always used a contrast thread at the back. Next time, I'll try your way too. Thank you for your response

Another simple but genius tip!
I'm making the Maras cardi by Rievive, which has double hems at the bottom and cuffs, but the button band is just 1x1 rib. Do you think I could use this technique to replicate the double edge? Buttonholes being the tricky part...?
Hi Deborah. This method does not affect the width of the button band. It wraps the edge of the fabric , but the band remains the same. Have fun with your project!
That's great. There's a much easier way of picking up stitches. I use a crochet hook. Pick up the stitch then transfer to the knitting needle. Way less fiddly.

Thank you so much Maryna! This is lovely, and I will certainly be giving it a try. I’m wondering if you’ve tested doing the 2 row “mini-band” in rib pattern instead of stockinette. Would it look less bulky?
I did and it looks bulkier than the one made in stockinette. I used thick yarn for my tests, maybe the band will look better when the yarn is thin. Give it a try. Happy knitting :-)
@@10rowsaday Thanks for letting me know, Maryna! I thought that might be the case, with the purl bumps being pushed forward by the inner "tube". How about a 1 row "mini-band", have you tried that too?
