Hi Charlotte. The approach is the same for any stitch pattern. To make a patch in garter stitch, knit all stitches instead of purling when you turn the work upside down to work a wrong-side row. Happy knitting :-)
This was really helpful! The trouble I had was that I ended on the other side (so I was grafting from the left) and the kitchener stitch tutorial is only from the right. I tried to follow it anyways, but it ended up looking pretty messy.

Hi Grace. This method works the same on all yarns. I demonstrated it on a thicker yarn to make it easier for you to see every step, but you can use this method to mend fine-knitted store-bought items as well. It helps to have a set of thin knitting needles, but you can also use a pair of toothpicks, a pair of long sewing needles, or similar household objects to substitute the knitting needles. It won't be as comfortable as using the needles, but it will be doable if you mend a small hole. For a bigger hole, it could be worth getting a set of thin knitting needles, especially if your mending will save an expensive cashmere, merino or silk sweater. Good luck!
