  • This 2015 Ford F-150 is stalling at idling. The issue is progressively getting worse. It’s been at the dealership a couple times in an attempt to get this issue resolved.. there’s a new purge solenoid installed and spark plugs.. let’s try and give the owner a solid Diagnosis.. I won’t have this truck for long so we may need to revisit this at a later date. Only time will tell. For now it’s here and I would love to hear your thoughts.. thanks in advance for the help and support.

    PLEASE READ!!! Don’t know if your issue has been fixed, but I had the EXACT same issue a couple years ago with rough idling/stalling on a 2016 F150 XLT with 5.0L V8. After many months of trying different things, I talked to a head mechanic at local dealership, it is your VCT solenoids. He recommended to me to switch to motorcraft synthetic blend oil AND filter, but not only that..he said “I know you will be spending more money, but change your oil more frequently.” (Every 3500-4000). I have done EXACTLY that for the past year and a half and have not had ONE sliver of rough idle since. I’m no mechanic but the way I understand it, when your oil life gets low, it can effect your VCT’s especially if you’re not using motorcraft oil and filter. The guy told me that the motorcraft filter helps to keep your oil running cleaner than other filters. Yes, at the time when he told me this I thought he was blowing smoke but I was desperate and fed up with my truck at the time. So I tried it and have not experienced an issue since. I apologize if someone has already mentioned something similar, I haven’t read through all the comments

    • @NJ-or4qr
      @NJ-or4qr ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And just to add to this to all who read this, mine started doing this early..maybe around 45-50k miles. And did it for a couple years up until around 80k or so when I swapped to all motorcraft and changed my oil more frequently. I am now around 110k on the truck and have not had any rough idle or stalling since around 80k. And I have not touched a VCT solenoid or any other parts

      When your truck stalled out did it roll backwards slightly? And even in drive it just died? My 2015 f150 just stalled out like this and the dealer can’t find anything wrong with it.

    • @NJ-or4qr
      @NJ-or4qr ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@andrewdicks627 nah it never did that. Mine was only at idle when I was completely stopped. Would idle rough and it got bad enough several times where it shut engine off and had to restart truck at a red light. Have you had rough idle issues that have progressively gotten worse or was this the first time this happened? That sounds like maybe spark plugs to me? Idk. It would also mainly do it when it was really hot outside or if I had been driving for a while and engine was warmed up

    • @NJ-or4qr
      @NJ-or4qr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andrewdicks627 just read over your reply again, not spark plugs lol but yes in drive it would die when I was idling sitting at red lights or stop signs. How long has it been since your last oil change? And what kind of oil and filter have you been using?

    • @NJ-or4qr
      @NJ-or4qr ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@andrewdicks627 also to add to that, I’ve read forums where dealerships can’t find anything wrong with some of these truck because it’s not throwing any codes. Apparently if your oil life gets low enough it can start rough idling and throw codes when engine is warmed up. But it’s harder to recreate it at dealership especially if the truck hasn’t been driving for a while with engine warmed up properly. So to put things in simpler terms, if you use the oil and filter that is recommended for your f150 and change your oil before your oil life gets to a low point, doesn’t it sound like it would negate all the rough idling and stalling issues? I’m just trying to recommend what has worked for me. I’m no mechanic, but whether I’m just putting a temporary bandaid on an issue that needs to be addressed (VCT’s and cam phasers) or if I’ve fixed the issue from better maintenance habits is beyond me. But the truck is holding steady for almost two years now

    That oil pressure gauge on the dash is a dummy light. As long as the pressure stays above whatever Ford's minimum spec is, it will stay in the middle of the gauge.

    Check oil pressure after a good drive when it is hot. If less than 25psi replace the engine. They are notorious for eating up cams and cam caps from low oil pressure. Even with new oil pump and timing set it can not maintain oil pressure at idle which causes the P0022. Pull a valve cover off and remove one of the cam caps to inspect for scoring.

    What bothers me is the negative LFTrim both banks. This normally means restricted air flow thru the engine. Wife’s ‘03 F150 had been stalling at red lights for years. One day I asked her if she had ever replaced the air filter NO. Drove it to auto parts and replaced air filter. The old filter must’ve been original. It was noticeably heavier than the new filter and was packed full of dirt. I should have caught this earlier. Not my intention to throw her under the truck!!! Sounds stupid but honestly this fixed the stalling problem.

    Oil pumps are volume driven, so any cause of low idle will cause oil pressure to sag at idle, and low idle can cause stalling. I'd be looking at things that affect idle, clean the throttle body, have a look at IAC counts if there is a data pid for that. It could even be that the cam phasor isn't getting enough oil pressure to move properly, so fixing an idle issue may solve everything.

      Thanks for all the great suggestions, I was initially hoping for the same. then I noticed the actual vs desired RPM in both captured instances.. nearly spot on. and the desired RPM while monitoring the oil pressure are very close as well.. when this did act up on me I noticed a slight hunting in the tack prior to it shutting down, I grab the scanner as quick as I could but I missed my window... I noticed the purge was commanded around 18% I'm also trying to look up the theory of operation on how the phasers interact, during this cycle and the idle operation. there's no IAC

I have a ethanol engine when you use ethanol it never does it because it’s the octane in the regular regular gas. I have to add fuel additives to mine from the place I get the oil change and the problem goes away. It would be nice to know if the Ford engineers have a engine shut down strategy for low oil pressure.

    I had a stretched timing chain on my 2015 3.5 ecoboost (130K miles). I changed the tensioners, chains, phasers, and 4 vct solenoids and the truck still stalled. I had to clean the throttle body, reset the ecu capacitors (remove negative batt terminal, then connect small wire to + & - for 10 minutes), then do the idle relearn procedure. My truck idled like crap at first, but I let it idle for 45 minues after sitting overnight to relearn idle correctly from a cold start with all assessories "off". Now my truck idles like new and never stalls. Don't forget to recalibrate the throttle pedel also after to maximize your throttle response. Lastly, keep your oil changed with high quality oil every 3K or so miles. I hope this helps someone!

    I have the exact same truck with the exact same issues. Did you ever figure out how to fix it. I’ve taken to multiple dealers and they say it’s because I was low on oil. Funny thing is I change my oil ever 4K miles at the dealer. So I know that’s not the problem. The only thing I can think is could you somehow tell the truck when it’s at idle to idle above 600rpm. Seems like it only jumps when it’s below 500rpm. It’s the weirds problem. Put new spark plugs new ignition coils. If you find a fix tag me.

    Probably the primary failure is the cam phaser at this point. Secondary failure is the VCT. Oil pressure is the key. Given the limited information available from the video, I would ask the customer if they just got an oil change when the problem started. You see the oil pressure is low, and 15PSI is low. First thing I would do it make sure the oil is full, clean, and just as important if not more so (in this case) is if the correct viscosity oil was used. I would also ask the customer about the viscosity of oil they use. An incorrect oil viscosity can cause this exact problem you are having. Testing the oil would possibly help, but too time consuming and expensive..
    Maybe, hopefully, this is helpful.

And I start sneaking and putting regular gas instead of higher octane to try to save a couple bucks. It will come back. Probably in a couple months. I know I shouldn’t do that. But gas is expensive. • @taylormurphy5221
    @taylormurphy5221 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The drivers intake VCT solenoid is not happy. Since there's no P0020 code it's mechanical not electrical. If oil is good now and issue persists, you can most likely deem the solenoid bad. If he only changes the oil when the truck tells him to or later, these things get gummed up, then camshaft stays over retarded. I had same symptoms and the same code, but also the electrical code as that was the issue. I have a video for testing the resistance, but I don't think thats the problem here. You may hear an audible difference in clicks if you can supply voltage to the solenoids.
    Ford oil pressure gauge is a dummy gauge. As soon as it sees like 5 pounds it reads full and stays there.

    Just got back 2019 F150 5.0 V8 for stalling at idle. Starts fine, but after coming to a stop (I.e. stop light, stop sign), would have trouble maintaining idle and engine would shut off. Local Dealer applied TSB 19-2365
    (static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10169811-0001.pdf) which corrects High Intake Manifold Vacuum during deceleration which results in oil being pulled into combustion chamber. Basically..it burns a ton of oil without any visual residue resulting in low oil. This corrected stalling problem immediately.
