Mini LED cube with 54 pixel, WiFi & gyroscope | SMT hotplate soldering | Pikocube v2.0

- The Pikocube is a little LED cube with 54 pixels, a ESP8285-01F WiFi MCU and an ADXL345 gyroscope sensor. The dimensions of every single PCB are 25x25mm. Flashable via those 6 SMD pads on the one side. Plan is to use the cube as a electronic dice which detects when it is thrown and when it gets inactive.

I had no idea you could do SMD that way.... That is INCREDIBLE! And I *love* that 3D printed soldering jig... Fantastic!
Thank you for a great video!
He used liquid lead and add components the he heated it to set it down
This is a prime example how 3D printing can be integrated into manufacturing workflow. Beautifully done!
I love watching the components right themselves on the pads when you heat everything up.
Very satisfying indeed
Ive never ever seen soldering done like this , I never knew such soldering exists, you earned my sub.
This video is amazing.

I guess you could say... It's a soldering iron
" BA DUM TSS ! "
I get it, the iron solders the components on to the circuit board.

Add wireless charging and pour white, semi-transparent material so that only the glowing LEDs are visible! :)
And add ability to download program wirelessly.
Totally agreed! Wireless charging is unfortunately not possible due to the PCB and the components between the charging coils. I tried it...
@@makermoekoe What about making the coil part of the PCB?
@@Ethan-ru6ir what would you call semi translucent?
@@makermoekoe you wouldn't be able to reprogram it either, maybe if you could extend the pads upwards and then cast to the same height it would work and look fancy?

There's a dude in my neighborhood who basically turns his house into this for the holidays. He uses a pile of Arduino and Raspberry Pi and it is fantastic.
I like that support stand. Making something like this is worth a Vid by itself. Looks factory made but u can never tell.
Man. I just don’t have the hand control you do. Great job.
Reflow soldering by an Iron. You let me think about "new" equipment. This is a great idea! With the right programming, you could also drive some profiles...
I built something like this about 16 years ago. It was 16mmx16mm with a 7x7 bi-color 0403 SMT led array on each side running on a 2xNiMh coin cells and a Motorola PIC18F??? MCU and an analog devices accelerometer. No wifi. The boards were fabricated at home. I ended up with too dim of a display due to the low battery voltage and eventually blew up the MCU and abandoned it. This video mades me think it might be time to revive it.
That's really cool. Might make a dice program for it. So when you roll the cube it only ligjt just a few leds
@@zc2ndbass An electronic dice was what I was going for. You could roll any number from 0-99 on it. You woke the dice by giving it a good shake. It ran in the lowest power mode waking every 3 seconds, checking the accelerometer for orientation change before going back to sleep. Once awake you could select the value of the device by rotating it up and down with the number displayed incrementing/decrementing by one for each 90 degree rotation. A quick vertical shake would lock in the number. You'd then roll it and it would display the number rolled on in red on all sides. The sides would then slowly dim and relight in green with the number the roll was out of (so you couldn't cheat) before the entire dice would dim and go back to sleep.
Time to start again!
Just saw the flatbed iron! Totally doing that with my iron. Awesome work! subscribed.

that cube is so cool but your work, the whole building process is also cool - precise and clean.

Man what a hardwork
That was some awesome work there. I really liked the recycled clothes iron as a hot plate to melt the solder paste. That rings all the bells for me: clever, budget, diy, and up-cycling / re-purposing. The cube looks awesome. I also liked your pogo-pin flashing setup. Neat-o mosquito. Thanks for the video. It was not only entertaining, but informative to watch your processes. I certainly got a lot of neat ideas from watching. So again, thanks.

Good job brother i like the way of your concept and hardwork 👍👌
Ich wünschte das ich auch so ein mini LED Cube hätte 🙁 Der ist wirklich super geworden 👍👍
Add emotion to the cube like he get angry when you drop him or else. You could make it a toy and get 🤑
bro, this ist most satysfying video that i have ever seen
That looks really awesome.
I thought it would be nice if you could make a dice using it.
The lights would shine in different colours when you roll it and once it come to a stop it would show the number you got.
R U ready to play a game with?I think nobody believes at the shit)))
That looks sick, solder melting on hotplate is so satisfying to watch!! Can’t wait for more videos like this!
And I reccommend you to use thiner PCBs if you can, it would look better.

Give it wireless charging + dip it in resin = world's coolest dice. Easy money to be made here.
I dipped the first version of this cube in resin. There is a video here as well. I tried wireless charging but unfortunately the coils doesn't work through the PCBs/LEDs... I have to try something else

I imagine this would be great for D&D. Code random color and number of LED's to display on the top most surface. Yeah. It's all coming together.
Make it display the same number on all surfaces so it’s easier to read, just track the state as though it were a real die.

Hi, could you share a bit of insight on the pogo-pin flashing system you use ? -schematics, what modules used etc. ? Thanks for a great vid - you are a very inspirational maker to follow :)
How do you recharge the battery in the cube? Is there any charging port on the cube?
Yes, it has two pads on the outside and an internal charging circuit in the inside
@@makermoekoe Is the charger clips on, or you need to hold it there whine charging?
Thanks a lot for that! Never thought, that something like that should be possible at home! All the best for your plan!

I want to buy one pre-assembled.
I would too if they where available.
It's really great! But buddy how do you charge it?
Would be nice to see the die in the end, you know, rolling the dice.
Is the result based on a random number generator? Because the die will never be fair physically with its geometry and weight imperfections.

I went into comment section to find answer to your question. Everyone, please bring it to the top!
I see positive and negative pin holes in a couple sides...
@@thesilkymodine he milled the board for accessing switch.... so he should have milled for charging port...
@@CoolansX it has two pads on the outside which will be contacted in a charging dock
@@makermoekoe i already saw that... but if a normal person wants to charge it... in that regard I want to have some sort of charging port...
awesome, i agreed with others about the charging / micro usb port, need a solution like a button on the conner of a cube, to cut a small hole in the edge
Love this. I have a few questions if you do not mind. If you aren't too busy to answer that is. If you don't want to do not worry about it too much. Thanks for the interesting vid.
1. Can the cube detect which side is up, and have just that side light up? 2. Can it retain memory for each individual side. As in you give each a specific color that only that side will display no matter what? 3. Is is possible to build a rechargeable version that small that you just have to place on one of the table top phone chargers??.
@@pplg-yt I was doing a search on making circuit boards on youtube, and this popped up. I wasn't sure what all it was capable of, but I thought that if it could be recharged on those phone charges you just lay the phone on you might be able to fill it with resin, and balance them to sue as actual dice. Depending on if they could tell their orientation.
@@justinclark4281 Hey! actually it has an accelerometer inside the cube, so it can easily detect the side up. Somewhere in the video I have shown that exact behaviour. Wireless charging is unfortunately not possible, because the coil have to go through the PCB with traces and components... I tried it because it was the plan but nevertheless it fails...
@@makermoekoe What about contact charging? like at the corners? You would need a custom charging stand, but that shouldn't be much of an issue.
@@justinclark4281 Yes that's what I actually did. There are two pads on the outside. These can be contacted in a charging dock
