- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 23 พ.ย. 2024
- We are in the market for a new sailing catamaran, and our list of must-haves is pretty long. This week we sail on a Catana 50 and see if it lives up to the reputation. But could we adapt to the helm position on these boats?

I did a passage on a catana 52. It had throttle control and full electronics on both sides. When keeping watch on autopilot, we would walk back and forth from helm to helm to make sure we could see 360 degrees around the boat. I have not sailed all that many catamarans, but the catana 52 was super nice.
I've sailed the Catana 47 and 53, really cool boats, and actually there is an enclosure for the helms that could cover you from the sun and rain. Yes, a down side is the blind spot when you're docking on the opposite side, but unless you have a flybridge, you always have one blind spot. (I'm 1,60m tall, so I always have to deal with that problem) Also, if you get electronic engine console, it would be really easy to set another throttle control in the other helm station and problem solved.
Hi. We saw the Windelo on a boatshow in France, and it truly blew us away. All electric. Fully made of recycled materials (some kind of rocks made into a fiberglass). Steering is in front, totally different from most other catamarans. It's also very fast. Please go have a look at them. They're based in Mediterranean part of France. Good luck in your search!
Two things : 1) there Is a catana 521 called "O2".It's little older, but ...very beautiful boat ( it's worth to see it (just oppinion ) , 2) there Is a lagoon 570 called "wild cat".She had exposed helms ( factory settings), but owners moved Helm in "mesanin"position (similar to "clarity" ). Maybe something like that can be done on a catana too.?!
Have a look at the Windelos, they should have the performance you want, completely protected helms (kinda like Atlantics you looked at a few weeks ago, but completely under the coach roof). With that said, they make the boat out of basalt fibers and recycled bottles, they are hybrid motors with regen when sailing and a ton of solar (meaning you'll rarely need to turn on the genset to motor). It is a newish builder so, you'd have to look hard at it, but based on what you guys have said in the past, it might be a great fit.
I would second this thought. Given all the comments on sustainability and independence on the water, the Windelos might be a great fit and they are getting ready to launch a 47-foot version next year. Only downside … the thought of having a generator on the boat again ☹️ - lol!
The Windelos are really growing on me for their innovation, simplicity, and green orientation both in energy and construction.
@@LLurk3r The generator on the Windelos probably get almost no use most of the time, except as a propulsion backup for very long becalmed passages. Most of the time 3+ kW of solar and hydrogeneration should provide more than enough energy for house loads, mooring, etc.
3+ kW is so much solar that you'd probably need to do laundry and watermaking more often to use the excess energy the Lithium ion batteries can't hold.
Seemed like an awesome family. Nice teamwork as you were docking. Thanks and great video.
Have sailed a Catana 50 and 52. Having the helm stations aft and outboard allows for rod-linkage steering. Easy to maintain, few to no failures and easy to replace worn parts. I like the connection to the environment as well.
Agreed. wanting a fast, fun, engaging cat then complaining about control lines and helms with feedback and engaging location seems strange. Look at that nice low boom. Nothing uglier than fly-bridge or even sport bridge condomarans, floating multi-tier wedding cakes, enclosure ones look like the pope-mobile. why is your boom 20 feet off the water? You feel no helm since you are 20 feet of cables and hoses away from the rudders. Isolation V Engagement seems to be the tradeoff. Pick ONE
Proud Catana owners! ❤️
Darn! Forgot to mention steering linkage. Huge benefit there…very robust on this boat.
@@akathesquid5794 yup. I live on untethered, love the comment😂 love the helms and steering, really low boom to! We love the boat
The ideal boat, two 50 HP diesel outboards, 2 water makers, 2 Home Depot/Lowe's refrigerator freezers, enclosed helm, 2 autopilots one on each rudder, 2 windlasses, 4kw of solar and LiIon batteries. Almost all cats except the forward cockpit Whites have poor forward visibility except when sitting at a raised helm all the time which is boring. You should run a radar alarm band most of the time in a cat. We even did it in a center cockpit Morgan O I 41 where all we had to do was raise our head from lounging.
We have a Catana and we LOVE IT!
Invaluable series sure to follow!! We are in the market and devouring reviews!! We love your guys channel!
Oh, this was fun, enjoying the journey with you both. All the best with the decisions you need to tackle for the purchase ahead.
We did this search a couple years ago before deciding on an older PDQ Antares 44. Not out racing Gunboats but she can hold her own!
@09:01 - What a cool dude!! Loved his thoughts and analysis!! Mrs. & Mr. O'Kelly's, this is the boat you need!! More than an trimaran, if you like Cats over Tri's.. Will wait for your visit on a Trimaran! But, I am sure, you enjoyed this trip!
I loved the comment about the price of the HH as you sail past an Xquisite.
Poor X5 just sitting at the dock!
Personally I love the Outremer 55 and the balance 52 but I went for the engine room on the Neel 51. Taking delivery in July. You should check it out; especially the engine room. It also sails very well but the engine room "is to die for"!
Congratulations!
Given the importance and proportion of time spent on repairs and maintenance, that Neel basement is a brilliant solution. Add to that it's performance, the master state room on the mainlevel and bow thrusters and you've got potent cruising satisfaction.
But it has only 1 engine right?
@@sailingsolo5290 correct. The obvious criticism is that of a lack of redundancy. However, I have yet to read about a trip saved because one engine broke beyond repair and the other one saved the day. Bad fuel, a common cause would affect both engines. With one engine you would have space for many spare parts and time to keep it in top shape.
@@6800891 I would have seperate fuel tanks on a cat. Its a obviouse point. I sail indonesia at the equator in asian waters the past 15 years. Engines are mandatory unless you can float for weeks in 1 spot and be ok with that, buying a cat for me would be first because they have twin engines w seperate fuel supply, they dont roll at anchor much at all. They have 2 of everything. Then tney can sail fast in lighter winds. I thank cats are ugly boats. All of them pretty much. But there practical for everything but prices.
Great video guys , thanks for the instruction and sharing your opinions.
Really niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice boat‼️‼️ Did not know the solid build quality and hardware quality. I will take another look. As to outside helms, most mono hulls (what we had for 18 years) usually have that as well....so I am kinda used to that in all kinds of weather........yet slowly looking for a change. 😊
Yes, closer to the racing monohull feel for sure. We’ve gotten spoiled on Clarity
Great and very informative video! Catanas are nice! But can’t wait to see what you will choose ☺️ Greetings from Seychelles 🇸🇨 👋
SLV lost one of their exposed, outboard seats on a passage when green water came over the hull. If it were a single-throttle helm station, it would have been an absolute disaster. Last month at the boat show in Yokohama, I checked out the Excess 11 cat and it has a similar arrangement to the Catana. While docking is obviously a plus, I can't imagine sitting back there in big seas to hand steer when the autopilot inevitably breaks at the worst possible time.
We have dual redundant autohelms!
@@robertpatten3075 As long as they can be activated independently without delay, that's probably all one needs. I realized, too, that my initial post may have seemed unnecessarily negative. To clarify, I actually liked the Excess 11 far more than I had anticipated. If I were to have such outboard, rear-set helm stations, I'd absolutely want redundant engine controls and autopilots.
I also deal with skin issues from the sun. nice cat🎉 I would probably pass because of the sun exposure and the weather factor. but that speed is sweet! Thank you for doing our shopping ☺️ so excited for more❤
I am so fascinated with the way so many cruisers go this route. I know myself to well and I know I personally never will. To me it’s all about logical reasoning and time. My whole life revolves around time. Fyi I’m not what you would call normal. But for me if I’m sitting in anchorage for weeks , sleeping , you name it , for thousands of hours…. Then compare what 2-5% of that time on the boat actually sailing ? Why would I sacrifice for the 95% ? But I get it. It’s just not for me.
I'm not so sure about that one... Seems super cluttered to me and as you say not such a great leap from Clarity. And you need more shade. Just mho. Love the inside. Cool family doing what they love! Safe sailing 💕🙏
The Catanas are phenomenal and QUICK. The aft double helms are a bit scary, though, if you're in the middle of a rough sea passage for my taste (too much time learning how to helm in a schooner with little protection).
The size might seem large, but it's perfect for two people to handle.
The newer versions, under the Bali name, are impeccable. The Bali 5.4, coming in at about 55.5 feet, with that fly bridge helm, gives you almost everything possible, but at a price; I'm afraid to see what they're listing at.
Whatever you decide, I know that you'll choose something which fits you to perfection and which you'll customize to your personalities and continue on with the New Clarity.
Cheers!
We’re on a 471 and we LOVE IT!
Quick is what we are after. Or maybe just quicker.
Great post my friends. I appreciate your perspective and sharp eyes sharing the pros and cons ✨️ ✨️ 🌞🌴⛵
WWWHHHHHAAAATTTT?!?!?!?!?
Welp. Those is now our #1 favorite episode ever 🙌😆 Because WE own a Catana 471 and we LOVE IT SO MUCH!
471 is another one we want to sail. Owners seem to really love ‘em.
Fellow Catana owners know!
We have a Dazcat (Multimarine, UK). Fast, light, fuel efficient. Fairly much they will do the spec you want for a price not too far off a production boat. We had one of our heads put on the bridge deck (for our disabled daughter)…we love this feature among others. They have a cult following within the UK multihull community. Definitely worth checking out.
Agree on the Dazcat. For two people who are looking for great sailing performance , also upwind and in rougher seastate, the Dazcat 1295 is ideal, although pricey. Even better if one can find an older used 1195.
Just a thought... setup a camera to show the "blind spot" and a screen for it at the helm.
Sailed a Catana 50 for a few weeks about 12y ago. The 50” range mass production catamarans are usually not faster than their 45”-48” siblings. They have just more volume and comfort.
The disadvantages of the unprotected helms are imo not worth mentioning. On a cat of this size the autopilot steers 99% of the time. And for the rest of the time, when you have to steer manually (docking, etc), an enclosure would not help much. Smbdy has to stay outside and handle the lines, the windlass, etc.
If you're using autopilot 99% of the time, then you should buy a powered boat. Some of us like sailing
The extra boat length was probably the difference in ride and speed. Exposed helm just doesn’t hack it in weather and sun protection. Duel helms shouldn't be needed on a cruising yatch.
i think Duel helms are a waste of space on a cat and on this boat thy are just to exposed but i am just a landlubber
Agree with Grant. Dual Helm is a waste of space. Been Skippering on Nautitech 40 dual helm weather exposed, poor port forward visibility. Always Docking on starboard (w. engine controls) anyway. Like Fontaine Pajot or Leopard Helms better.
That lack of visibility on the port side from the helm, the outdoor helm and its height are negatives but all round it’s a nice boat
Fun suggestion...to get a fast boat, you don't even need to buy another...just unload everything, then pack only the top 20 must have items and go 2 knots faster lol!
You are probably right.
I think your counterparts on Ruby Rose have picked a winner with the SeaWind 1370. It certainly solves the double helm station issue with identical controls and better cover, and they have outstanding visibility. The only thing I know of that could be a negative is near term availability and maybe price. I'm interested to see what you think of them.
Lol, not as I see it. I find those helm positions to be the worst of all worlds. Poor visibility forward unless looking through the cabin, and also poor sight on the sails unless leaning out side the cockpit. On top of that you lose a bunch of living space back there. I am sure there will be fans, and it sure looks sexy with those sleek lines, and I will reserve final judgement for after I sail on one, but at this point….I’m a skeptic.
@@TheOKellys Fair enough, that's why I watch more than one channel. The visibility I was referring to was through the cabin and those large forward windows which would also seem to alleviate the nav station view also. The Wynns just announced they're going to sell and buy a new boat, so maybe all my vloggers will be grounded at the same time.
The new to come Catana 50 is supposed to have a central helm on a fly bridge instead of the outboard helms. I can't wait to see that!
How about a 300 foot Maltese Double Headed Falcon catamaran?
You could put a soccer field between the two hulls, maybe land some aircraft, or grow a few acres of wheat.
Possibly sail over top of other boats, saving docking fees as other boats could use yours as a weather shelter.
Shades of the RMS Tyrannic, "The Biggest Thing in All the World!" (yes I spelled that correctly.)
Great review! Nice job!!! Keep em coming
I couldn’t do the exposed helms, especially with only one throttle quadrant… Balance 482 is my money no object dream boat when considering speed
That is one almost brown up chill kid in the bean bag 🎉😊
Great episode this week !!!!
It was great meeting you at dinner on Grand Bahama. Enjoy Grand Bahama & keep us posted & sharing tips, they are greatly appreciated. Lori & Dave
How cool to meet you guys! Thanks for saying hi. Did you recognize the family we were dining with?
Sorry we didn’t notice, long day of diving today. Beautiful seas
Ive seen some of the mini-enclosures on the Nautitechs helms I wonder if there Catana's with a similar solution for sun protection
Hope you get a chance to look at the Privilege line!
That's a nice boat. Outer edged helms look a bit dicey. However, If the boat has Redundancy back up, one shouldn't be caught out at a bad time and be stuck out there in bad weather. 2nd throttle etc on the other helm, shouldnt be too hard a thing to fit in? Id be inclined to set Velcro tabs below those winches to hold 2 gallon buckets in place for those lines to drop into, just to keep the things off the deck.. ( OCD neatness thing)
Life is full of compromises, I'd guess that living on a Boat full time, you'd know a thing or two about compromises :) I hope you find the compromise you're looking for. Stay safe all, be well.
Forgot to mention, but those helms have direct linkage steering…..really bulletproof. That’s another benefit of those helms. But yeh, it’s all a compromise for sure.
There are rope "buckets" built in on both sides of that big winch!
There is a 2005 Schionning Waterline 1480 for sale in Brisbane Australia. It is 49 feet long and has a listed displacement (assumed to be dry weight) of 6500 kg (14,330). Really light!!! It is a true performance boat. Price is USD 406,504.
You might also check out the 2016 Marsaudon Composites ts42. Price is 895,000 Euros. The problem: It is electric which brings a lot of problems. But, it is fast!!!
There is an extremely small market for true performance boats which is why no production catamaran companies build them. However, having said that, you can specify Catana or Outremer with performance specs but that means you will have to do without the weight contributing luxuries that you want (like A/C).
The new Lagoon 51, a big, heavy and slow floating luxury apartment, has been setting sales records and it is still in the prototype stage.
We surveyed a 1480 years ago. Hard chines make for a shifty ride for us. Too light for us. But yeh, really really fast.
@@TheOKellys You mentioned Crowther designed Catanas. They were fast. So too were the early Danson designed Outremers. However, the marketing people decided that the markets for sporty and comfortable floating apartments (like Seawinds and most modern catamarans) were more lucrative so they stopped making the fast boats. You may have to focus on a custom boat or an older boat. Right now, the only true performance boats made in Europe are Dazcat and Marsaudon. Because they are performance oriented, the waiting period for new builds is shorter. HH? Made in China and the quality is questionable.
Good luck…..
It’s all about the mission profile….
Oh, that’s an aviation terminology….
But still applies!!!!
Indeed it does!
The Bali line looks nice and does crossings, but good luck finding one used. The 4.8 seems the best balance for myself in a few years when I am retired.
Unfortunately they're also not great sailing boats. If you're looking for something a bit faster than a Leopard then a Bali is not going to make you happy. They even did away with trampolines (and added loads of weight forward) for the sake of more lounging space. No thanks.
Good one Megan and Nick , Thankyou ,hello from Alberta Canada.
I noticed on your graph having gunboat for performance and lagoon for comfort, below lagoon you out FP. Is that personal opinion or something else ? I’ve been looking at cat’s and like some of the FP layouts specially the cockpit.
Thanks John
Don’t take that graph too literally….I mean to say FP is in general lower performance than our boat. Comfort wise, there are some really awesome FPs. We really like the Helia. Depending on personal preference, the FPs are more comfortable than Clarity.
That was a good Blog. I was thinking about going to the west coast to look at prices. Maybe I'd get lucky.
If you could find a Windelo to try out. That one really has my attention.
Don’t go with anything you are uncomfortable with safety first. That chris white cockpit/helm is the antithesis of the catana. Not to say its a bad thing. Good luck can’t wait to see what’s next
Us too!
The channel "the sailing family" talks alot about his outremer. He loves to sail. He got a job selling boats. HH???? perhaps. I know my future open 46 is no outremer , but watching the smile on his face made me upgrade from an Astrea 42
@14:44 - Still more? Check out the Rapido, which La Vegabande is building... Thats the fastest, but, the helm is still opeeeeeeen!! Let's see if they can put a cover over your head for you, like bem!
11:20 Mount a forward facing reverse camera with the screen on the helm?
The folks over at Sailing Ruby Rose did a pretty good breakdown job of all the current catamarans on the market, I think they were shopping new rather than used, but their method of scoring a boat was pretty job and help focus their search. Anyway good luck with the hunt.
Did they sail hose boats in their reviews?
@@TheOKellys Good point, not all but some. I was referring more to their scoring system, but a lot of their reviews were at boat shows which is fine if you're in the new boat market. You can whittle down the huge array of models and sail the ones you think look promising. Now of course if you were to "partner" with a manufacturer that might make your search a little easier ;-) :D
Hahahhaaa.
Given it’s just the two of you, the outremer 45 would seem like the best bet. Could even go for the 4x if your budget can stretch. There is a 45 on the market in the South Pacific. Another option is an older outremer 49.
Older 49 probably the best match for us of the Outremer
the owner guy looks like billy bob thornton
Yah- that made me feel like you were flying & FAST! Nice position on a sunny day. Love the ability to check sail shape, the pocket & the slip stream, but- Megan can't be doing this. Also, it's a slippery slope folks. First, it a new suite of sails (Dacron), then, a new suite of carbon sails, right? We didn't even talk about downwind sails- arghhh, I smell $100k in sail investment. Ouch. Then, you gotta go Dyneema, right? Big twin 50's off to the sides & that nice 70 on the pedestal- I'm FEELING the need for Dyneema, Nick! Although I really, really like the build out of the interior- gorgeous, yet, somewhat informal. I loved it. Super effective & very comfy.
Hahahahaha! Of course you’re right….another 100k!
Good points about helm position. Good presentation of the advantages and limitations. The Leopard, Fontaine Pajot.... -raised, just over the saloon roof (as opposed to fly decks) is more ideal. Might not be able to get it though... (I never sorted the boats I was interested in by helm position - it just seemed like availability and performance reduced my helm choice to: Is there anyway I can get an Outremer 55? Nope -end of that as an option.) I'm guessing that the 'ideal' must be Gunboat/HH - center front, inside/outside After all these are no compromise, no expense spared boats. The thing about helm position does make me wonder: How is it the British never made a sports car with the steering wheel in the back seat? Maybe driver's seat right over the starboard aft tyre....
Lol. Good question!
Sipping coffee from my new O'Kelly Style mug, while Samantha and I watch y'all go through this somewhat agonizing process (again), and we patiently wait for our Leopard 42 from RC. Glad our decision is made, but there is certainly something to be said for the hunt. Good luck! And when we see y'all on water in the future, please put in a few reefs to make it fair. 😜
Yeh, what the heck are we doing to ourselves here? Maybe we just keep Clarity. She’s a great boat!
@@TheOKellys Well since you ended your sentence with a question mark, I guess it wasn't rhetorical....? So here goes! What the heck are you two doing?! Are you mad? Just kidding. You guys know the drill. Whatever you purchase, old or new, and even if you keep Clarity, this business of sailing is a love/hate relationship. If you are still feeling spry and wanting a greater physical challenge that a more performance-minded boat will bring, then go for it. It's really just a question of what you want the next five years to look like; more chilling, or more thrilling.
Wow, that's a really interesting way of looking at it Greg. Seriously. Some wisdom there.
@@TheOKellys I'm always a sage with other's money! 🤣
What about a Neel Tri. Fast roomy with great helms in and out. Main deck Master with stand up engine room.
Good to hear our thoughts on the exposed helms and general motion, both of which have been a concern for me in my own hunt.
I haven't sailed any of those you listed on your graph, but I wonder why you put the Outremer (and Seawind) on the lower-end for comfort? Is it carrying capacity that limits things there?
I'm surprised you haven't already ordered or bought a boat to be honest; the used market is nuts and new boat have lead times in the years. I guess with the right connections though...
Outremer and Seawind are less comfortable boats, in our opinion, having sailed both the Outremer 55 and the Seawind 1260. Maybe we keep Clarity!?!?!?!
What about a Schionning Arrow 1360 like a boat called Duet that you can find on TH-cam?
I think the helm stations would suck in heavy weather that needs hands on.other than that there great.
Helms are a deal breaker.
Ok for a weekend boat to cruise around the bay.
But for a live aboard long distance cruiser for a couple? No chance.
me too! Those type are lovely on good days, but one thing I've learned from all these channels is that stuff breaks - at the worst time. I'll never forget watching Delos crossing the Indian Ocean to Madagascar with broken autopilot and having to hand steer in some pretty gnarly weather. I couldn't imagine being at those helms in those conditions for all watches in the dark, high seas, storms. No way.
@@cheerio3847 The Delos Indian Ocean episodes will go down in Infamy as the best Ocean state footage. Epic is an understatement. 🏆
@@cheerio3847 How do you think we did it before auto pilots… On my very first cruise from Los Angeles to Australia on a 57 Swann we hand steered the whole way….
@@dingo397 Uhmm, hand steering isn't the problem. It's the helm position, exposed stern when you plan blue water passages. I love hand steering, it's one of the things I love about sailing. It doesn't seem like sailing if you aren't steering! But, I've never done an ocean passage, I'm a weekender. Exposed helm when you can cherry pick for weather on coastal cruising isn't a big deal. For live aboard cruisers - as you know from your own experience - you can't weather plan weeks out and you have to plan that you may get surprised by foul conditions mid passage. You can also be surprised by equipment failures and Murphy says some will happen together.
My comment is simply that if I was doing blue water cruising and around the world, I would NOT want that exposed helm position. When younger in my 20s & early 30s I would have enjoyed it, but not now when my belief in my invincibility has met reality! Even if I was tied in w/ safety lines, I would be so freaked out worrying about being swept off my feet and not able to steer until I've clawed my way back up, that I would not be able to really focus where I should be focused.
In bad weather at my age, I want to be in a safe and fairly dry location while I worry about steering. Some nav stations have steering ability - but it is often limited, not as good as the helm and reliant on the autopilot. And it could break...
Its a personal preference. I'm the type who plans for a few failures so I don't panic when Murphy hits, I just switch to Plan B or C or D. Part of that planning is making sure I won't be stuck steering from a position that I wouldn't feel safe in a storm. Even if it would be rare, I'd plan for my deal breaker situation and not buy that boat.
@@cheerio3847 that’s why the autopilot and steering is build bulletproof
Instead of a 2 axis graph try plotting the boats in a triangle that maps performance, cost and comfort. That will be a much better representation of the options. I my experience, you can pick any two of the three. Of you can have cheap and fast or cheap and comfy. If you want both fast and comfy, it won't be cheap.
Doing he best we can.
@@TheOKellys You guys rock!
-Mono- Oyster 74.5 Priced well and gorgeous!! Nice video though.
You can have fast, comfortable, and cheap. Pick two?
Now that's a Cat i can live with. i love those helms. real sailors cat.
Great as always!
S/V Archer is for sale, of The Sailing Family. I’ll collect my finders fee anytime 😂
Why I feel that a wheel inside like Chris White, Gunboat etc should be standard.
So when do you get to sail away on the CW57, adding custom touches? Enjoy.
Send Chris a note for us, will ya? Lol
You should check out the Repido. Such a beautifully designe boat. Love your content. Hope you find the perfect new home :)
long wait
Kids impressed me.
It seems all the manufacturers are looking for a TH-cam sailing channel to act as ambassdors/marketers for their new catamarans! My guess is that you are going to link with Catana and their new Ocean Class catamaran! Hope it's correct because it looks like a nice boat. They would be lucky to have you on their team!
Wouldn’t that be cool!
How often do you need to sit at the helm? We just did our 24 hr passage from manjack cay to cape Canaveral in 24 hours averaging 9.5 knots for most of the 211 mile passage and nobody hand steered in the 20-25 knot winds. We made all our steering adjustments with the auto helm on the low response #2 setting and the boat ran like a champ day and night.
Docking with the outboard helms obviously better but how often do you dock anyway when cruising?
Great boat though , watch build quality on boats built after they moved factory across France to the ‘economically poor’ area!
Lock Crowther👍
Cheers Warren
Good point. We are never autopilot 98% of the time
I have seen a couple of Catana's with nice helm enclosures. Also you can probably add engine controls to the other side easily (it is only money). The blind spot is an issue, but with a NEMA 2000 network it would be easy to add a camera facing the bow (or even one for each amma). With NEMA 2000 you could even make the nav station a helm station. But at the price point for a Catana (and a Bali is not a Catana), unless you are willing to move to a smaller and older boat you could be looking at a new balance 45 or 48 for the same money and get much better performance. People that have sailed the new Seawinds have raved about their sailing performance. For anyone who is upset about the Bali comment I just spent a week on a 2018 4.2, yes it was a charter boat, but it was a piece of meat compared to other charter boats. Yugo built better cars then that Bali.
Can u suggest a camera? I have an open 46 on order.
That's might depend on if you went with B&G, Raymarine, or Garmin. With NEMA 2000 it shouldn't matter if everything is NEMA 2000 compatible it should work (essentially open source). But, Raymarine a FLIR are the same company and Garmin fields their own cameras. I don't know what B&G is doing. Nautitech has installed them, so you could contact them and ask for their input. I will tell you that I have seen a guy using a couple of Garmin bluetooth backing cameras that he clips to the stanchions (they sit in a drawer when he doesn't need them). I was amazed at how well that worked he can put them where he needs them when he needs them.
@@MarkLawrenceKiefer nautitech only wants to talk about the factory options. But you nailed it I'm deciding between something I would put on a car or something specific for a boat. You make it sound like the car option will work..
I've often wondered how difficult it would be to retrofit one of the helms wth a Versahelm-type swinging helm?
I'm just getting into boats but I think when you step aboard you'll know that's the one.
Yep, always works like that.
What about a Mummby or an O yacht or Eric Larouge design like the Flash cat or Brazeppi?
Like some of the Lerouge…..not familiar with the others.
@@TheOKellys Google the Mumby cybercat 50 and O yacht catamarans they have a nice 46 footer
Nice review. Whose 360º camera are you using? Would you recommend it? I'm in the market for a 360º camera...
We are using the hero Max. Seems to work well enough. Haven’t tried the others, so hard to compare.
@@TheOKellys I like the shots you’re getting with it. Some new perspectives are a nice thing.
How about a Seawind 1600?
Would love one.
Easy, OC50, Balance 44, 48 or 52, Outremer 51 or Seawind 1370 or 1600.
Send money!
@@TheOKellys I get it... even the less expensive OC from HH is expensive. Probably only the Seawind 1370 (next available around 2025) or the Balance 44 are less than 7 figures. I really just wanted to mention the OC because you only cited the HH in the video. Good luck with your search. I am sure you will land on something good if you guys are patient.
As you don't spend a lot of time in marinas, and according to transatlantic stats wich shows that big cats always have the best time (even if it's lagoons), why dont you prefer a longer (and much comfy) catamaran to a "racing" one ? Thanks for the show you're so aweesome !
We are open to a longer boat, for sure.
Ohohohoho... If you are interested in this boat that can be good for family of four, that means, there will be two more Mrs./Mr. O'Kellys very soon!! Please be specific for brothers like me!
Please specify how many Jr. O'Kellys!! 🤔🤔🤩🤩☝️✌️🤞🖖🖐️👌 Or let me know, when are you coming to India to hit me big brother!! 🤔🤗🤭🤭🤭🤭
Nick, I loved how you gave a bit of info on the different cats. I'm wondering, if iu might share your opinion on a St. Francis 50?? Don't know why but I really like what I see, and I want to take a sea trial on one. Thanks
Merlin
We have been aboard a few as guests, but never sailed on one, so nothing to say in that regard, which is important. They strike me as very solid, heavier, comfortable boats. 50 feet is a lot of waterline, so it’s going to have some speed, but fast…..no I don’t think so. Quality build, quality finish.
Thank you very much!!! And THANK YOU for the videos, I enjoy watching you and Kelly every week, until I can leave Colorado and head south!
They're fantastic boats, very well built, excellent finish work, and they come well-equipped right from the factory. They're made to cross oceans in comfort. But fast they are not. They're heavy and maybe even a little under powered. But they have the systems and tankage to get you through the extra couple of days you will spend on passage.
@@btrotta thank you!! I am not looking for a FAST boat, I understand Nick and Kelly are wanting more speed, I am actually looking to slow down. I appreciate the info. I am currently in Denver, CO. And haven't YET, had a chance to step foot on one. They just really attract me. I guarantee I will delve deeper and sail one now!!! Again, Thank You!!!
What about a Seawind 1370.If Ruby Rose is getting one and Nick and Threasa are picky the Seawind has to be good for them to buy it..
Nah, we would like to go to a performance boat. I expect the 1370 will be nice, but not in the performance category….we’d might as well just stick with Clarity.
You guy's, in my humble opinion did a great job with this video and you touched on some very key point. The difference between Clarity and this Katana, difference's you could only make by actually sailing the vessel, hopefully you can do this with other cat's you may be considering. If you can check out the new balance with the adjustable helm, seems like a better fit for you guy's. I love the Tech please keep it coming....Have fun Shopping !!!...lol
Thanks! Yeh, gotta sail the boats….
What’s the timeline, if any on buying another cat?….
Foxtrot-Juliet-Bravo !!!
Many long term cruising channels follow this same path yet the question that occurs to me is "Why do you want to sail faster?" The overwhelming majority of time is spent not sailing, so why does it matter if a 72 hour cruise is completed in 68 hours? If sailing is wonderful, wouldn't one want to spend more time sailing? I am not sure why speed becomes an issue, unless it is just a male middle age thing - you know, like buying a sports car.lol
because sailing fast get you out of bad weather also get you somewhere faster so you can spend more time just having time off.
Sailing is fun. Sailing fast is funner.
@@TheOKellys And I didn't mention I love your channel! So thanks for everything. :-)
@@TheOKellys I am so hoping for a 200 mile day. Time will tell.
@@kirk9671 Get a RapidoTrimaran. They have already accomplished 200 miles per day.
ARCHER , CHEERS !
Have you thought about a Neel trimaran?
We sailed the 47 last year and enjoyed it. Most likely looking for another cat though.
50 foot is a lot for 2 people . Aren't alot of docks and haul out places limited by width and length?
Big compromise with the helm position but everything is a compromise. I think the slightly elevated bulkhead helm would be best but what do I know??? Balance versa-helm looks ideal, but again, I've not tried them all. The flybridges would not work for me, as a sailor.
If I had the money, I'd buy Archer, the Outremer 51. Another big issue is that my homeport mooring is max 45'. I've tried to extend for years but it's getting to the point that I doubt it will ever be permitted..... politics
Outremer 55 looks nice.
Indeed they do….
try to see Marsaudon Composites ORC50 or 57.
Very nice. Too much $$
Please please please check out the new vision 444 made in South Africa Knysna. She sails and lives AMAZING. All the best with your search
4:28 Skipper in training seems to know his stuff. Good job young man! Keep learning!
Not wild about Catana interior design. Seems too bunker-like. Greatly prefer the simpler, more open designs like Balance, Seawind, etc.
I hope you buy a Seawind! I think they’re better than the Catana! I might be biased as I’m Australian 😀
They are also nice boats. Very different designs tho!
And then there was the schionning a poor man’s gun boat = ❤️
And if you choose a new boat how long do you have to wait to have it built, 2 to 2 1/2 years?
We probably not in the market for new….
Are they Sailing Kiwis??
