- To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Sailor Moon anime which first aired in Japan on March 7 1992, today I’ll be sharing some of my favorite snippets of where Sailor Moon came from and the history of the anime.

Sailor Moon is a shojo anime about Usagi Tsukino, a 14 year old teenager who becomes a super hero and fights enemies keen on wreaking havoc on the world. The anime and manga is copyright Naoko Takeuchi and Toei Animation. The manga comics were originally serialized in 1991, and the anime in 1992. Now at it's 30th anniversary, this media franchise is aimed at adult women who watched Sailor Moon in the 90's. My channel is directed and targeted towards women from ages 18-44 who were, and still are, fans of Sailor Moon. 0% of my audience includes persons under the age of 18. I swear... all of us North American Sailor Moon fans, when we were younger, had the same experience. No one to talk to about the show, catching and being excited for episodes that we didn't know existed, and the EXTENSIVE programming VCRs to record them if we weren't able to watch them live.
I don't know, I remember there being a time in grade 2 and 3 where it seemed everyone, boy and girl alike, knew about and discussed the series, so I don't think that's accurate. Heck, my and I, all of whom were boys, would sometimes play Sailor Moon on the playground, and argue over who got to be Sailor Mars, when we weren't playing something more masculine like James Bond. After its height died down, then it made less sense to admit to still watching it, I think.
This made me be grateful for growing up in Latin America where anime shows where quite popular. Sailor moon and dragon ball where the shows that every kid watched at the time
I believe I watched all the seasons of sailor moon as kid so fortunately we didn't have to wait for it

I was a young kid when it first came out to America. While I wasn't part of the target demographic (I was a boy) I was extremely addicted to the show. While I didn't see girls I could hang out with Sailor Mars and Sailor Jupiter was among my first anime crushes (another being Bulma). To this day I love tough independent women. Earlier, I would dislike the ending of Sailor Moon Stars because Sailor Moon would take advantage of the sword in her favor, but growing up I understood the meaning of Sailor Moon defeating Galaxia without any weapons, using only love and dialogue.

It's weird, because in my experience, I remember it being popular. At least one girl in my grade was obsessed with it. I knew what it was, but I disliked it because I had to sit through the dumb end credits while I waited for Dragonball Z to be on.
But Dragonball Z wasn't popular, either. I used to get mocked by kids who turned around a couple years later and claimed to be the biggest fans, and that they had NO idea that I liked it, I certainly didn't get them into it, they liked it before me.
Now everyone and their grandpa remembers DBZ and is still watching it. But so, too, do Moonies remember it and it's everywhere like DBZ is. It's arguably the "girl DBZ." In my mind, this is exactly how DBZ started, and I feel like non anime fans recognize both because they were and are so prevalent. Idk, I just definitely don't remember it failing in the US or so few people knowing about it that you'd be worried nobody has a clue what you're talking about. I mean... they did just have a huge 20th anniversary reboot, created Crystal, and are now celebrating 30 years. There's merch everywhere. I literally own a Colourpop Sailor Moon eyeshadow palette, which was sold out to hell when it first came out. Heidi Klum was seen on Insta wearing Sailor Moon merch. Gucci has made Sailor Moon boots.
a lot of my classmates didn't know about it. the few who'd heard about it (boys) said it "didn't count" ...this was before i even knew of the word "anime". now, all of a sudden, everyone 'loves' sailor moon because of this merchandise thing they're doing. and i've seen jimmy choo advertising sailor moon boots for $15,000 . i find it all ridiculous
@@v.4900 I don't think it's ridiculous at all. I've heard Moonies are hella gatekeepy, though, and this kinda sounds like that. The fact is, a lot more people knew about Sailor Moon in the 90s and still love it to this day, or the merchandising wouldn't even be happening. It's not like a company is going to bring up something obscure for a collection and then everyone is going to jump on it when they didn't know it or like it previously.
Sailor Moon's just a huge series and always has been.
I've absolutely experienced that gatekeeping in the community. It's like some sailor moon fans believe that they "own" sailor moon or the news that comes out about it and they'll bully anyone who they believe don't belong in the community. It's really sad that people like that exist.
@@horohorosrin i haven't experienced that, only because i've actually never met anyone in person who even heard about Sailor Moon. and i'm not a gatekeeper...didn't mean to come off that way at all. (i show up late to a lot of stuff so new fans don't make a difference to me) i'm just saying that the people that i have personally talked to about it - who told me that they never heard about it - are saying they've "been fans" now because of the merchandise stuff.
it would be different if someone said "well i just now started watching it because of all the advertisements and i love it"

I was blessed with the entire series. The original one. From Europe, in the 90’s. Nothing was changed from what I remember. The movies were also streamed on tv in the end of the 90’s. Nothing was lost on me.

I can say that, at least growing up in Canada, Sailor Moon was pretty big when the first couple seasons aired. It definitely died down after 1996 though. Still, my friends and I definitely still watched it, albeit casually.

As an older fan Ive see sailor moon pretty much from the beginning. When it finished in English I was lucky enough to live in the south where we get Mexican channels. I got to watch in its entirety. Years later when I they gave those "lost eps" in English they were not lost to me I had seen them and not even known it. Fun times..... now I do believe the original spanish dub is considered lost footage but I consider it the best dub. I got to see all the episodes with no alterations or sencerships. And Star will probably always be my favorite season.
The dic dub is also considered "extinct" but we oldies know where to find them 🤪
This was not first anime in Poland ( at this same time General Daimos, Captain Tsubasa or Maya the bee), but this was first great at the time, I remember that how computer and game magazine were shocked of quality of this anime, propably this is when anime genre start in Poland, first anime meets are in fact Sailor Moon fan meeting, thing only comparapable next are propably only Dragon Ball, Pokemon or MLP fandom.
As a someone who was born in 1989 in Poland and had only 3 basic TV channels I'm amazed how I was able to watch complete series of such classics as Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon when I was 7-9 years old and how in the following years anime just seems ceased to exist in Polish TV. :(
America definitely has a lull in anime for a while too. We started seeing a big resurgence thanks to newer shows
Thank you for this video essay. Sailormoon was not censored or snipped in my country when it was being shown. But it was persecuted (jokingly) that watching it made boys become gays. I know its offensive but that only meant that non-fans actually recognized the fame it had.
Here in Canada, when it aired on YTV and Global Television, did air the Doom Tree arc after the first part of the Black Moon/Negamoon arc of Sailor Moon R. Because I remember seeing the Rini episodes after "Day of Destiny" and then suddenly "The Return of Sailor Moon" aired and I wondered why we were getting that opening prologue when it wasn't at the beginning of "Serena Times Two", which I thought was the first episode of the new season. So yeah, here in Canada the arcs aired out of order initially, but it didn't happen that way in the U.S., and when we got reruns here, all of the episodes aired in the correct order.

I’ve become a fan of Sailor Moon since it aired on TV here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I watched every episode of every season of Sailor Moon which aired on TV here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I thought I’m a guy, but I found the anime show awesome and educational. I truly have identified with Serena or Usagi but as a male version of her; because I’m exactly like her when it comes to her compassion for others, even her compassion for the villains whom she helped to regain the goodness that they’ve lost.
I always see good in people; even those who have become bitter. And like Usagi or Serena, I look at what made this person so bitter and bad, what was the original reason behind their unreasonable anger and hatred.
I believe we are all born innocent until the world tainted our minds with bitterness, jealousy, unreasonable anger and hatred. Therefore I have great compassion for those who have fallen from their goodness.
I hope someday the world would be a better place for everyone. Where no one faces bigotry and hatred.
I truly miss watching Sailor Moon on regular TV channels. I hope they bring her back. Or a live version of her with the up-to-date technology we have available. We came a long way with technology since the 90s. Perhaps a live movie like Marvel Studios when they aired Wonder Woman. Or when they aired Wonder Woman on TV was played by Linda Carter.

You're in luck, ma'am. The final arc of Sailor Moon is going to be adapted into a two-part movie called: Sailor Moon Cosmos in the summer of 2023. I'm so excited to see it when it comes out on Netflix. Be on the look out for it, and please make review videos on all five arcs of Sailor Moon, both the original anime, and the Crystal adaptations.

The Viz dub saved the series in America and dub the alternative series and redubbed the 90s anime with better voice actors.

S.M. was really popular as all.the Comicons prove all around the World 🌎 🤣!!!!! But S.M.was truly messed by tv stations with weird airing times; like here she was on at 5:30 amc Monday to Friday with the series cut to only 40 episodes, and the 4 Generals each had only 10 episodes to "Destroy" her, but really to kill her. Or else Evil Queen Beryl killed them off. But lost her Main Generals. And lost power! Then S.M. Added more and more Scouts, and gained strength 💪!! Yet S.M. was also on at Sunday Mornings at 7: 30 amc. Meaning the story took 40 weeks just for the ORIGIN STORY. But also adding the extra stories of the DOOM TREE 🌳; AND the Wiseman and Rubeus Arc, with the total 65 eps., lasting over 1 year plus 13 weekends. But SUDDENLY CANCELLED when Lita as Jupiter arrives. But replaced with "SAMURAI PIZZA 🍕 CATS " 🐈 😻 🐈⬛ 😢, WEIRD!!!!! S.M. was canceled just over a year. AND SUDDENLY REAPPEARED on U.S.A. NETWORK; YET.....Even more heavily edited. Which was noted because the new theme songs 🎵 by DIC and Andy Heyward, and Bob Summers,, SUDDENLY STOPPED ✋ in the middle of the scenes!!!!! Just to add more ads for cereal and toys and P.S.A.'s. Yet U.S.A. also Added CLOSED CAPTIONS for the Deaf, and with the Full script. And like stage directions like, "the monster growls...Rarrrrr!!!!!". BUT U.S.A. ALSO CANCELED AFTER LITA APPEARED!!! Then S.M. was off over 2 years. The actresses found new roles. Like Katie Griffin as Raye and Mars was also in TOTALLY SPIES as Alex. Or Susan Roman as Lita and Jupiter acted in Barbie 🎬 🎞 🎥 🎦 📽 🎟 movie; and surprisingly she was in "THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD " as James the Red Engine 5 with her cute Cockney British accent. Luckily S.M. was picked up by the New CARTOON NETWORK. But shown at 2:30 pm Central but also 3:30 p.m. Eastern. But after they changed her to 4:30 pm.-C she became SUPER HOT 🔥!!!!! Because the school kids were finally able to watch ⌚ her at a reasonable time ⏲. Instead of re-programming their parents V.C.R....BUT MAYBE THEY ALSO USED BETAMAX?!?!?!?!? LOL 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣!!!!! FINALLY S.M. WAS THE SMASH HIT THAT BECAME THE INTERNATIONAL SENSATION !!!!! HOORAY !!!!! AMEN ✝️ 🙏!!!!! ALLELUIA !!!!!

HI SNUBS! At the end, I heard about your other website, MORSE CODE, I also work in railroad museums, and Ham Radio when I needed Morse code for my license, thus we all know, "...---..." as the "S.O.S." call for HELP!! PLUS ➕, the railroads used Morse for the locomotive whistles; like "!!-!" is "Q" for the highway grade crossings. And in the new computers by using digital signals, basically Binary, with 1 and 0, simply On of Off, thus even though we are using 5G signals for our phones. It is still a very sophisticated Morse code, KOOOOOL!!!!! HI IN APRIL 2023A.D.!!!!!
Fun Fact: In 1995 came Sailor Moon also in Germany but the German Dub of the series based directly from original japanese version und was faithful and uncut dubbed in Germany (some names was mistranslated and some gender are different which can be a censorship or also a mistranslation, i think it was rather mistranslation).
But this faithful dub was very sucessful in Germany after a network and timeslot change and 1997. In 1998 season 2-5 was completely dubbed and aired on German television and Germany had his own Sailor Moon Pop/Idol Band which make the music of the German Sailor Moon openigs
Late comment but regarding the out of order dates for R, I can confirm this as someone who watched the original dub through it's first airing at 6:30 AM on WPIX-WB11 in 96, they did fix this order during re-runs though. My memory is kinda crap too but this was at a time when I used to record episodes on video tapes after waiting a half hour before it started then re-watch when I got home from school.
Anyway, apparently the same thing happened in Canada when it first aired on YTV as well.

S.M. Obviously needs many more stories, because Usagi just turned 15 during the Pegasus Arc. Will she get her Driver's Liscense at 16. And when she turns 18 she graduated 🎓 High school 🏫 with lots of help from Ami and the Scouts. She could get a car as a grad present 🎁, and it turns into a SUPER MOON CAR 🚗 PINK because she Hates to run with those High 👠 Heel 👢 👢 boots. And use her Moon Scepter 🌙 to make the car 🚗 appear and change. Will Usagi go to College?? Or like in the Manga, will she have a BIG WEDDING 💑 to 🙏 Mamaru? so it didn't really take off in the US? (which can probably explain alot I browsed through several Sears US Wishbooks from the 90s and I noticed that they were seriously lacking in Sailor Moon content, I don't know if other stores had exclusive rights down there but all I saw was a cassette tape), however when I looked at a wishbook from Canada from 1996-1998 it was swimming with stuff. Guess it fared better in Canada

I saw Sailor Moon some part of it on UPN in mid 90s like 1996 and i cant remember as a whole but i know i seen it once back then, one of my few anime alongside Speed Racer, wouldnt until i would see the show years later on TV - up till they show airplaying Sailor Moon on Cartoon Network in early 2000s.. as a guy myself folk would say why im watching sailor moon as a girl show..
Sailor moon// serena was my original waifu growing up.
I pushed through to about 100 episodes of Sailer Moon and couldn't keep going. Lost interest but my sister loved the show. The only thing that weirded me out was the age gap between Sailor Moon and Darius. She was 14 and he was in his 20s. It wasn't right. Then Remi was into the unicorn guy who was a whole adult while she was a child. So...yeah. Couldn't behind it. And then the villains started getting very one note after a while.
For anyone checking the comments and seeing this, Usagi is 14, and Mamoru is 16 in the manga version at the beginning of season 1, in the anime he was aged up to 17/18.
Helios is a pegasus / humanoid but not really human, and we don't know his age but he appears to be early teens, though acts older given he's immortal.
The 1990s era anime used the same theming of a "monster of the day" similar to a lot of other anime of that time period. But if you don't like those kind of filler eps, I recommend reading the manga or watching Crystal instead. Crystal (released in the 2010's as a reboot of Sailor Moon) doesn't have the same character arcs, but it's much faster paced.
Well, not really. It was very popular in Canada, which is a part of North America, when it was airing on YTV. It failed in the US during its syndication run, sure, but it wasn't an OUTRIGHT failure. An average 800,000 viewership back in the day wasn't terrible numbers, moreso just meh numbers.
If you want some animated TV series that REALLY failed in the US, then there's stuff like Timberwood Tales, which reportedly aired on ABC on Saturday mornings in 1991 & is now barely remembered, let alone known about. Or how about The Haunted Pork Burns Unit, a strange European cartoon that seems to have only ever been recalled by Yossarian & might've been exported to the US on some obscure local station in a not very populated region of like, let's assume Arkansas. Yeah I really wonder if anyone else has ever seen The Haunted Pork Burns Unit.

I only saw the US version and rewatched a lot online but never appreciated the original until I saw the modern dub of one of the movies and realized how dumbed down the series became
One day I will try to watch the modern dub of the originals…can’t help but wish that is what we got with the original voices and music…think the newer series are on Netflix but not the original or modern redos

Hi there, I'm compiling a list of "comic book movies" and have added the Sailor Moon movies. Do the movies function as stand-alone films? So if I watch the movies in release order would I be able to follow just fine or do I really need to watch all the anime in order to follow?
The movies don't explain anything that happened pre-Dream Arc. So I'd recommend watching the seasons prior to the movies since they just pick up the storyline.

I was born in 1991, and I can remember watching sailor moon early in the morning before school started for me. I thought it was a good show, but I really got into it after spending time with my cousin, who had like everything from sailor moon growing up. So I watched all the DiC Dub, all the movies, and the Japanese of Sailor Stars probably 15 years ago!
Sailor Moon Crystal was very interesting to me. It made the story make more sense to me and it was quite powerful. To this day, I can’t bring myself to watch the VIZ Media dub. I just miss the music of the DIC dub, and the names: Serena, Rini, Darien, etc. but I have watched the cut episodes in Japanese. Didn’t understand why the episodes with sailor Venus backstory was cut.
Now I’m just waiting for Sailor Cosmos movie to come out in Netflix, and I’m starting to read the manga!
Say what you will about the Dic dub you can’t beat the music from the Dic dub. The Dic dub music was way better than the original songs.

Music for the DIC dub was composed by Bob Summers, and the Music Kitchen, 🎶, and the opening was by Andy Heyward president of DIC and unique with 3 part rhyme !!! P.s., have you listened to foreign versions. Like French, and German with truly unique lyrics and music 🎶!!!!! But other countries will translate "Moonlight Densetsu" either with Japanese Lyrics; or the DIC lyrics from Toronto!!! HI IN April 2023A.D. And there are up to 53 variations of the S.M. Main Theme ranging from the "WALTZ", to the dark and off key "QUEEN BERYL". PLUS ➕ the Exciting "FIGHT", and "Monster chasing Sailor ⛵ 🌙 "!!!!! And 49 others. Hi in 2023A.D!

A not so fun fact is that both sides of the Russo-Ukrainian war are using sailor moon for their propaganda. That’s how much influence sailor moon has apparently.

I prefer to use their DiC and Cloverway names.
I use traditional Japanese names since those are what the author named them. 😊
The "millitant" SM fans you mention would no doubt agree. Obvously, it's become convention in the fandom. I'm for the DiC names. Somebody had to speak up so I did.
