I don't know the whole chain but Summer Walker used a Manley Reference Cardioid, so did 6lack on Free 6lack. I think Lucky Daye has used a Telefunken ELA M 251.
That's a solid vocal chain. I have the WA 87 and in a shootout I can't tell the difference between it and the Neumann. Also, I have the WA 73, which is a 1073 replica and it is incredible. I'm in the process of purchasing a cL1b because I haven't found a replica for that except for the plug in. I currently go through my Avalon 737 or the cL1b plug in. Also, grabbing the WA 8000 which is the Sony C 800 g replica. If your pockets aren't as deep as some of these million dollar studios, then replicas can really get you there. Thanks for the content
I can hear the difference between all the gear wa 87 and u87, c800 and wa 800, the wa 73 and a 1073, too my ears their not very close. But they do sound good better than just an interface but maybe 1/5 th of the sound give or take. Gonna be missing lower mid body in all 3 and the mics a capsule high end bump that’s literally hiding unwanted cheap capsule peaks.
Ooooo correct me if I’m wrong but a vocal chain is a series of or different pieces of equipment connected together that the vocals pass thru to produce the final sound of the vocals recorded and/or created by the artist.
I was looking to get a U87i but I do not record vocals all the time, I have a Rode NT1 with a DBX 376 tube mic pre. Turn up the drive adjust the EQ, compressor and de-esser setting to taste and you have a pretty warm sounding vocal. Dont need it so warm, turn down the drive and add a bit more highs with the EQ. While the vocalist is "warming" up that is your cue to make input adjustments. Use that time wisely because its not good to stop a session to make adjustments.
A very versatile, tried and true vox chain! This can work for most, if not, all genres; with different settings and adjustments, ofc. I worked at a studio that had mostly emu's of the hardware and got pretty close to the real thing..! I hope to own some real ones sometime in the future ✨
What does he use live? Well I’m glad you asked. Digico SD series (5,7,10,12), channel strip on the desk for basic shaping and compression, a neve 5045 run into an avalon 737, a d-two delay for delay throws, bricasti M7 for verb, a smart c2 for master bus compression, and various waves plug ins as well or sometimes as substitutes if the hardware mentioned earlier isn’t available. Not in order by the way. Ask me how I know.
My bro engineered a session for the Migos back in like 2017 when they were in the country and after their session they made him delete the vocal chains lol they sat there and made sure they were deleted too.
I can’t believe they put this much thought into that vocal. You can make it sound good with a $50 mic and garage band. It’s all about the cadence and swag not the sound.
Plugin boutique has the CL1B going for $149. Thinking bout coppin it since I’m lookin for a compressor. right now I’m running the tlm 103 into an apollo twin with the stock compressor in pro tools. Also thinking about my options for a pre amp to use in the uad console
I did a vocal session at Errol Brown from Hot Chocolate's studio in London a few years ago and they had the same pre amp and compressor plus an EQ but they swapped the U87 for a JZ67 mic and it actually sounded better in the chain. This was a vintage U87 yet the JZ67 had more detail in the reproduction of my voice. The pre amp, compressor and EQ seem to be more important than the microphone. The different mics just give your voice a color and the rack gear shapes it to make it sound great IMO
Hey Archie, have you ever heard a Vintage 1073 as compared to a 1073 SPX? I would love to see what you think. From my understanding the only difference is that The SPX uses the same circuit design, but with modern manufacturing techniques, including a combination of in-house SMT and hand assembly methods, and also includes many feature additions to keep the 1073 up-to-date with modern studio use. The comparison would be nice.
I record future and you had it all right except the mic. We actually use a Sony c800g. Even if you look at the video you have attached to this video of future in the studio you will see he's using a c800g.
This Vocal chain is considered an "Industry Standard". It's literally in every professional studio I've worked in. We prefer Vintage 87's and not the AI's. Neve 1073, Tube Tech CL1B, Vintage Neumann U87.

In the Apollo Console I choose the the Neeve 1073 and the CL1B and record like that right? So I got the Future Vocal Chain. But that's not it right? What Plug-Ins do should I put on the vocals after recording them in my DAW? Sorry I'm just the rapper and just getting into mixing.
Just so yall know, analog obsession has amazing versions of these plugins completely for free. They basically have a version of every piece of classic analog gear in vst form and they sound freaking amazing. I stopped using universal audio plugins because analog obsession is just as good if not better.
If you like the sound of the U87, check out Dachman Audio’s clone. I bought the SE, and it’s the best mic I’ve ever owned. I’ve never had the pleasure of using the U87 itself, but I work with an engineer who has worked with them, and he thought the vocals were comparable. Incredible value at $400 (think it might be $500 now).

Autotune 5
