Coilovers, wider wheels with proper tires, new brakes and then maybe some power increases. I'd have put a proper seat and steering wheel in before a power mod, especially nitrous..
I know that everyone have different opinions on how the car should be tuned and modified. But you never EVER should race with worn out tyres, summer or all seasons on a track, especially in the Nürburgring. It's about safety, not about the fastest lap.
Silly mods really. Even on a budget a lot more could have been done. Forget more power as it already had 230 which is plenty enough for the chassis. Uprated Shocks and anti roll bars, an LSD and things would have been a lot safer and faster for less money. Having said that the weather was shit so it would have taken a complete hero to get round there in a good time without ending up in the barrier.
The car went on a dyno in episode 2 before it had the NOS fitted. It's 20 years old and has at least a cold air intake and a free flow exhaust - who knows what's been done to it before this series?
End of the day they learned why Alfisti are so passionate about the cars despite their shortcomings, and got to take something other than a rental around the ring - that's a pretty good adventure in my books, and while it might not be the most conventional approach to modification a 916 GTV isn't a conventional approach to casual track work. Kudos for educating us on a bit of oft forgotten history.
Lol my Alfa is 25 years old and it's solid, never let me down, funny how people just assume they're unreliable. I'd have taken a 147 with the 2.0 litre T Spark engine for its superior handling. I've never understood the hype around the nurnbergring, looks a right shithole lol.
I like the presenter, but this series is awful. the car is butchered and downright more dangerous than before. tires, brakes, general condition, suspension, roll cage and then go further. This is a quality channel, this series not so much.
Richard Harrold that's not a cage, it's a half cage/roll bar. Also stripping the wing for more aero on a track that needs every bit of it, with all the high speed sections, raises a few eyebrows. Also nitrous to add hp instead of a turbo or supercharger is just wanting to be different instead of doing it the right way. Butchered the car completely.
Richard Harrold no downforce needed on a fwd car? The engine is already in the front, adding downforce on the rear axle helps the weight distribution. Maybe he wouldn't have almost binned it by spinning out with some decent downforce.
A rear spoiler on a front-driver race car will help with braking, cornering, and the reduction of lift. Under heavy braking, the rear of the car may want to come around, as the load forces are transitioned heavily to the nose. A rear spoiler can help mitigate some of that and keep the rear contact patches more firmly planted. Apparently.
Sorry you don't like the direction this gentleman went with his car, but I thought it was different and fun. And the fact that we're arguing about the merits of his upgrades means that there's room for debate and no "right answer."
Question the reliability of the car despite the fact first thing you did was add NOS. I have this car, it’s not exactly a Merc from the ‘80’s but when serviced properly, it’s reliable. The engine is great as are most other systems. The biggest issue is the suspension which is made for grip but its complexity means it’s not smooth or will last for decades. I feel this series does a disservice to this car which is a bit of an unsung future classic.
Hilarious-read rules Follows the “no timing rule” Ignores “using video equipment during TF” rule By the way, your driver is using the “dry line”, that’s why he keeps sliding.
I really can't see why anyone would hate so much on this man and on this series. The concept behind the video is interesting, the way the content is delivered is clear and overall it is very entertaining to watch. You may say he didn't choose the right car or that he didn't spend his money in the best way possible, but still it was his personal way of doing it and he had fun, which is the most important aspect of driving a car. Also he prioritized what he think is best for that car and for what he wanted to achieve.
Thanks - I think some viewers are, perhaps, taking this a bit too seriously. I've been mucking about with cars like this for 20 years and love the historic angle. It's about fun, that's all. :)
What a credit to the channel you are for doing this series...top man! As a former GTV 3.0 V6 24v owner, this video was absolutely perfect in its descriptions and analysis. A truly classic car with fundamental faults that you will forget once you turn the key. Best V6 engine ever made.
I have a Gtv V6 and I don't share the presenter's continual neurosis about unreliability, perhaps for £3K he bought a dog of one? My feelings are for what he used it for he should have purchased a decent one which is £6k and attempted the Ring in that rather than 'wasting' money on the 'mods' he chose which appeared to make naff all difference.
Couldn't agree more. My Alfa is 50 years old and I drive far more miles a year than this with NO problems whatsoever....typical tripe talked by parties that are clueless.
I think that it has more with a fact that it is a 20-year-old car which he does not know well yet. He would doubt any cars reliability, regardless of a brand
"I've prepared this car for the racetrack, where I'll be pushing all of its components to their limits and trusting my life to it under those tough conditions, but I'm afraid to drive it to the track at normal speeds because it's 20 years old which means it might break." =\
MathsYknow fair enough, I haven't actually gotten round to watch the video yet. I was just skimming the comments, that said the last one of mine was 17 years old before i sold it old and I ragged the arse off it, had no issues. But I get the concern
Its been obvious throughout the entire series that the team knew next to nothing about the GTV and didn't bother to do any research. Doing upgrades especially on a budget a bit of knowledge would have gone a long long way. The shots of the car and the sound quality where good though.
Number of great racing drivers with zero mechanical sympathy, zero. Number of great lovers who are selfish lovers, zero. It might look rough but she loves it.
As a 3.0V6 GTV owner , it pains to see how an appreciating future classic has been butchered in this series. Worst of all, doesn't even do justice to this car!
I like the presenter, but the concept of the series isn't great, that car is straight up dangerous and you really shouldn't promote dangerous racing, you should try to make your car as safe as possible for the Ring.
Shame about the rain. You never said weather the car had a Q2 Limited Slip Diff which is absolutely essential to reduce understeer. This was an optional extra when new and should be on the car if your going racing.
Well I’ve had 8 Alfa’s including this GTV. The first and only modification should have been the Q2 Diff before anything else. Even if there was no money afterwards this all you would have needed.
Super interesting way to learn about the history of Nuvolari. A quality series. Surprised people appear to be missing the point in the comments here, surely this is about the story more than the actual car or the lap.
@TAngoNation The rear end of the car itself has a sharp edge , so flow separation will happen all the same. The added spoiler is just there for the looks, and adding a lot of drag, of the top of my head, maybe something like 8%.
Ziga Veren , you said it, the aero pack, when you add air dams on cars with no downforce they get significantly improved drag, and in the city you drive like a granny with phobias, and then they add the spoiler and they fuck it all up That's why we can't have nice things...
Adding Nitrous to a Busso V6 not a good idea. Apart from that great great idea. Absolutely enjoyed watching it. It is quite refreshing to see something different on youtube. You guys are doing great. Keep it that way.
I enjoyed throughly and inspired me todo some thing like this. Record does not matter.....am happy that you enjoyed that experience can no one take away from you.....keep it up
i think that the presenter is trying to make the alfa as similar as possible to the one back in the 1930,s which would mean the absence of the tire, suspension and brake upgrades because the old alfa would have poor tires, brakes and suspension. hes trying to experience what the racing driver guy experienced back in the day.
But then why 'upgrade' that stuff at all, then? If the idea is to half-recreate a historic lap, adding modern mods (lol, nos) to it kinda flies off in the opposite direction of 'back in the day experience' in any way, IMO.
Ah the Alfa 'race car' series comments...this should be fun Take a nice car, make it useless on the track and undriveable on the street. Good work. Good to see the NOS put to good use too..... If you want to do a fast lap around any track you should upgrade the suspension and brakes more -Bigger anti roll bars -Polyurathane bushes -Coil over suspension -lightweight and wide wheels (with decent rubber) -bigger disc rotors, bigger calipers and some hi temp fluid Oh and strip the interior and boot. Wasn't it Colin Chapman who said "add lightness?" Seemed to work for the cars sporting his company logo. Or you can do down the Fast and Furious route and add NOS...... I know which one I'd trust to make a quick car...
men you can hate alfa on everything only one thing not thats how nice the busso looks and sounds. there are very few manufacters who make engines with chrome inlets and ingraved cam covers
I liked the series. It felt amateur, but very entertaining. Somehow I could relate to each video. May be you didnt make everything right, but this is not the most important thing after all...
The problem is mostly front wheel drive on a wet surface. While rear wheel drive seems worse, with rear wheel drive you still have some control over the rear with your right foot. When a front wheel drive loses grip at the rear, however, you are basically a passenger with nothing to do but hope the front wheels pull you out... except they won't when you are at the grip limit already. Personally I prefer rear wheel over front wheel on a wet surface any time of the day.
I liked it. I'm happy they took an Alfa and not another E30 or something. Although something RWD like a 75 or something would probably have been better. I like the presenter very much.
Yes, thank you for showing us how to build a "cheap" track car as if it has been designed in a need for speed game, only to transport it to the track on the back of a flatbed.
Despite some of the reservations in the comments I enjoyed it because I have just bought a very similar car, same colour, same age and it's been great to see the love for the car the guy has developed and that he's realised he's butchered it! I think it is or was for sale so maybe one of the complainers here could return it to it's former glory :)
Super Vid! I set a personal record on the A3 London-Petersfield section of the Nurburgring this week. Got the GTV V6 home from the KIngs Road in 55 mins. (Wife sedated for the length of the journey. Perfect passenger).
10:48 you say there are not a lot of modified ones? I know for 5 of them from my head right now (alfaowners forum) i had mine specially modified for track use, no understeer on mine, moved front tyres more forward, stiffer rear arb, lsd, lightened front end, balanced tuned engine to cca 270bhp and so on... I like the show but didnt liked the mods.
A very interesting and informative mini series which was fun to watch... shame about the weather and track closure as it would have been great to see both car and driver at their best...
Been a massive fan since the XCAR days. Like the presenter. But I don't understand the mods - especially nitrous. It's sacrilege. Would like to see a part two, with a much heavier focus on suspension/handling mods, as opposed to Fast and Furious gimmicks.
Pretty sure the integra's type r rear wing isnt there for looks ... Its there to prevent oversteer.. Pretty sure renouving a rear wing isnt a "improuving in aero", fwd cars get a pretty bad snap over steer especially one with a heavy v6 in the front and 0 weight in the back, you need that downforce to keep the rear planted
Loved this series - looked like a proper laugh and a very brave session on the Grey Hell. Fab seeing the GTV undressed too. Not taking things too seriously but still making an interesting set of films. Great job 👍🏼
Very enjoyable video to watch. Didn't think I'd like the presenter but I leave looking forward to watching more from him. I struggle to believe the 'pirouette' happened by accident on the one corner where you had a camera man outside though! ;)
Genuinely there's no way I could have faked that, and if you know where to search online you'll find the original footage in full, from an amateur cameraman on the same corner.
Great, everything ! with a cherry on a top - the Stone Roses and my favorite track :) Thank you for history lesson too . (somehow I forgive you NOS now, you have pay your sef out haha) cheers and thank you once more time.
Well shot, nicely edited, well presented, but... I have to agree with the others, the content's just not there. I absolutely appreciate you for sticking with it (seeing as it's a relatively short series after all), but you do need to get back to the drawing board for the next project.
Great videos, I really enjoyed watching them especially as I've just bought one....on eBay.... I've driven Alfas for years they are more reliable than you think. The history and the advance engineering of the 20's,30's&40s' somehow is still in the DNA of cars that carry that badge...hard to believe I know but to me anyway it's true. These cars make you smile! Cheers.
Dont really understand why it is unreliable. Was it badly mantained? You keep on about quircks because its an Alfa, but these 916 models all derived from the 155 and are good cars without electronic problems and especially the V6 is quite bullitproof. From itself the 24v have the 330mm brembo kit and they brake really well. No fading with fresh fluid. I like the Nuvolari touch to it. Legendary story. When will you have both legs in plaster and go ride a motobike? ;)
I really like this series. The mods were quite silly though. PLEASE don't do anything stupid with that GTV (and if you do please send the rims over lol). And put the bloody spoiler on!!
Good job! Again you could have bought the cousin, the Fiat Coupe. Mine did 8.36 (btg) around the ring, then to Paris, then back home to Sweden in great comfort.
Coilovers, wider wheels with proper tires, new brakes and then maybe some power increases.
I'd have put a proper seat and steering wheel in before a power mod, especially nitrous..
Isn't Michelin Pilot Sport 4S one of the best tires for sport cars?
Yup!
I know that everyone have different opinions on how the car should be tuned and modified. But you never EVER should race with worn out tyres, summer or all seasons on a track, especially in the Nürburgring. It's about safety, not about the fastest lap.

210 bph not 230bhp because this engine got the smaller air intake tubes !
The car went on a dyno in episode 2 before it had the NOS fitted. It's 20 years old and has at least a cold air intake and a free flow exhaust - who knows what's been done to it before this series?
The stiffer springs and the LSD ok, but why the anti roll?
SQTOS Anti roll bar or sway bar is a suspension part which improves handling. Its not roll cage as was fitted to this car.
AlfaAddict Dammit, I know what the anti roll is. :)
For some reason I wasn't thinking about the possible balance tuning...
Thank you!
Too much power, not enough grip?
*Didn't see that coming* 👀
Lol my Alfa is 25 years old and it's solid, never let me down, funny how people just assume they're unreliable. I'd have taken a 147 with the 2.0 litre T Spark engine for its superior handling. I've never understood the hype around the nurnbergring, looks a right shithole lol.

Why does it sound like you left the indicator on the whole time😑
Jonny Norris I think you're hearing the windshield wiper.
That was the wipers. Or my pacemaker working overtime...
did you drive for 5 mins with an indicator on?
nope, that was actually the bgrd music, it fades into it properly at 4:10

Saket Sharma, agreed.
You guys take all of this a bit too seriously
Ignore the haters who don't get it. This is about the story, not being a trackday geek, and the story was presented wonderfully.
Thanks. Glad you get it.
Been waiting for this. "It may handle better..." It may not! I wonder how much he will regret removing the spoiler.
I like the presenter, but the concept of the series isn't great, that car is straight up dangerous and you really shouldn't promote dangerous racing, you should try to make your car as safe as possible for the Ring.
If you think that car was dangerous, you know nothing of driving Italian!!!!
I greatly enjoyed your efforts thanks
6:46 So, how is your "improved aero" working for you?
It's not related..
search 4 my other comment.
write2chrome At those speeds no amount of wing is going to have effect
Not everything in life is Hollywood thankfully so. I appreciated the authentic "having a crack" and also the humility, much appreciated.
Thanks, much appreciated!
Shame about the rain. You never said weather the car had a Q2 Limited Slip Diff which is absolutely essential to reduce understeer. This was an optional extra when new and should be on the car if your going racing.
It didn't - and we really wanted one, but it was too expensive. We also fancied a Rotrex supercharger but the NoS was cheaper (albeit a bit pants).
Yup, spot on. Thanks for the comment.
"improved aero"... Didn't he took off the damm spoiler
Nicholas Edmund tbh what a fucking spoiler. Wasnt doing any good
Arthur Lamouroux It was. A spoiler isn't a wing.
@TAngoNation
The rear end of the car itself has a sharp edge , so flow separation will happen all the same.
The added spoiler is just there for the looks, and adding a lot of drag, of the top of my head, maybe something like 8%.
actually the aero pack with this spoiler adds the gtv 10kph higher top speed... you can look it up
Ziga Veren , you said it, the aero pack, when you add air dams on cars with no downforce they get significantly improved drag, and in the city you drive like a granny with phobias, and then they add the spoiler and they fuck it all up
That's why we can't have nice things...
GTV is one of the sexiest cars ever. That shape and appearance are incredible.
GTV Spider with roof down. Damn
Adding Nitrous to a Busso V6 not a good idea. Apart from that great great idea. Absolutely enjoyed watching it. It is quite refreshing to see something different on youtube. You guys are doing great. Keep it that way.
10 in the wet? I'd bet against that.
Great save there in the wet. That was spectacular!
Beautiful video/music. I'd love the car if it was rwd tho.
I enjoyed throughly and inspired me todo some thing like this. Record does not matter.....am happy that you enjoyed that experience can no one take away from you.....keep it up
This series is bringing down the overall quality of this channel lol
isaac gifford it really is
But you watched the whole series I guess?
Mansfield that’s not the point 🤣
Mansfield i personally expected this channels videos to be good but i guess i was wrong
Chill out Benjamin
i think that the presenter is trying to make the alfa as similar as possible to the one back in the 1930,s which would mean the absence of the tire, suspension and brake upgrades because the old alfa would have poor tires, brakes and suspension. hes trying to experience what the racing driver guy experienced back in the day.

i think it was just to add some power. honestly, adding nos was pointless.
Only way was to practice for several weeks on a 'simulator' to understand the track
I've been practising on the real track for 20 years. Still can't manage a perfectly 'clean' lap there!
Great little series, informative and entertaining and I enjoyed it immensely. Please more.
Nice little project. Love Alfas, GTV 916 is gorgeous!
Thanks Ilya.
Ah the Alfa 'race car' series comments...this should be fun
Take a nice car, make it useless on the track and undriveable on the street. Good work.
Good to see the NOS put to good use too.....
If you want to do a fast lap around any track you should upgrade the suspension and brakes more
-Bigger anti roll bars
-Polyurathane bushes
-Coil over suspension
-lightweight and wide wheels (with decent rubber)
-bigger disc rotors, bigger calipers and some hi temp fluid
Oh and strip the interior and boot.
Wasn't it Colin Chapman who said "add lightness?" Seemed to work for the cars sporting his company logo.
Or you can do down the Fast and Furious route and add NOS...... I know which one I'd trust to make a quick car...
I'll look forward to your build videos then. Your plans sound good!
men you can hate alfa on everything only one thing not thats how nice the busso looks and sounds. there are very few manufacters who make engines with chrome inlets and ingraved cam covers
Forget the lap time if you had fun it was worth it right!?
I liked the series. It felt amateur, but very entertaining. Somehow I could relate to each video. May be you didnt make everything right, but this is not the most important thing after all...

Well held!
The problem is mostly front wheel drive on a wet surface. While rear wheel drive seems worse, with rear wheel drive you still have some control over the rear with your right foot. Personally I prefer rear wheel over front wheel on a wet surface any time of the day.
Very entertaining Rich thanks, own a well sorted one of these and track it regularly, loads of fun!
Beautiful car, and very good of you liberate your self of those urban legends...
I liked it. I'm happy they took an Alfa and not another E30 or something. Although something RWD like a 75 or something would probably have been better. I like the presenter very much.
The Presenter appreciates it. I've also had an E30 (crashed it at Donington, my local circuit) and would love a 75.
rain = use the rain line
This is a tourist-and-fart day
I thought this was a good first go at this type of series. I enjoyed it despite the flaws. Looking forward to the next.
More series like this guys.... Really interesting and quite diferent from the rest of channels
Started watching this series last night and this video aligned with my lunch break perfectly
loved the history lesson! very neat
What a perfect viedeo to put those two stories of the Alfa of Nuvolari and the classic Pininfarina GTV together! Bravo! Well done!
I'm sort of glad this series has came to an end to be honest. It was painful to watch.
Henry would have made it great. For greatness add Catchpole.
Im sure if you ask nicely he'll give you your money back.
You watched it, maybe you should do better, leave a link to your TH-cam videos you believe are better than this series was
Disagree, this was a great set of videos.
Savage, but 6k spent on a track car and these charlies end up with this? To each their own n all that i suppose?
Where can I get rollcage like that??
Loved this series guys, so much history and what an interesting car. Would like to experience a drive, especially the engine.
Absolutely wonderful video.
Enjoyed it but hope they do another one and go a little further with it
again this is BRUTAL just like his tache
Yes, thank you for showing us how to build a "cheap" track car as if it has been designed in a need for speed game, only to transport it to the track on the back of a flatbed.

Thanks. Sold and returned to standard a while ago now. I hope the new owner enjoys it as much as I did.
I liked this series. It was a bit different, a bit quirky, much like the car and brand. Good job chaps.
A bit of fun and a great history lesson,
What a great laugh and a great adventure. Well done! What's next?
Thanks! Dunno, actually, we're busy launching a magazine called MotorPunk so no time for the next video yet...
Super Vid! I set a personal record on the A3 London-Petersfield section of the Nurburgring this week. Got the GTV V6 home from the KIngs Road in 55 mins. (Wife sedated for the length of the journey. Perfect passenger).
Great little series!

Was you in a rush at the end seems like you were talking faster than your car
Last orders were approaching.
Absolutely fantastic series
More Victor Meldrew than Tazio Nuvolari I'm afraid.
I don't believe it.
The circuit is 14 MILES long or 20 KILOMETERS. It is not 14 Km . . .
This guy is pretty likeable, but the track prep he did to this Alfa is probably the worst crack I've ever seen.
Been a massive fan since the XCAR days. Like the presenter. But I don't understand the mods - especially nitrous. It's sacrilege.
Would like to see a part two, with a much heavier focus on suspension/handling mods, as opposed to Fast and Furious gimmicks.
Wonderful series! So glad to see an older (but still newer!) Alfa featured. Really enjoyed the presenter.
i like this guy, where did he go??
What happens to the car now?
Returned to standard already and sold to a nice chap who will treat it well.
Cheers!
In which case, very well held Sir!
I absolutely appreciate you for sticking with it (seeing as it's a relatively short series after all), but you do need to get back to the drawing board for the next project.
that was it? Just one lap? What a dissapointing series this was..
You caught that spin well mate👍🍺
Great series Rich, really enjoyed it, I'd buy a GTV just to look at to be honest. Nick was perfection as always :-)
Cheers! Nick has to tolerate a lot. He's a pro.
Good Save :)
Thanks. Not the first time I'd got it wrong at the 'ring.
Fun series. Bit of an anticlimax. Was hoping you were going to try again with better weather.
I loved a back-story. Well, for full modifications shows you can go watch like MCM. This was a nice, relaxing trip to Green Hell.
Cheers.
Awesome cheers for shearing your experience.......'well held' by the way 😀
I seem to be in the minority, but I enjoyed the whole series. Good on ya mate!
I enjoyed making it, so, thanks!
And put the bloody spoiler on!!
fair play on that slide!!
The Nurburgring is 13 miles long, not 14KM!!
21km
Good job!
Again you could have bought the cousin, the Fiat Coupe. Mine did 8.36 (btg) around the ring, then to Paris, then back home to Sweden in great comfort.
Awesome!
Loved the series....too work!
the presenter is good. the history part was well. but the car no. give us a serie with a real car with a full mod. and go set a real tracktime.
Honestly, being Ruthless to an Alfa is the last thing you wanna do.
