I can't remember which Beyerdynamic handheld condenser (TGV96c? Discontinued?) has an all-metal, 3 or 4 stage mesh grille, but I'd be interested in hearing it. I'm currently looking for a replacement foam insert for my much used ksm9. I imagine the beta 87a would fit, but the white one for the ksm9 is apparently discontinued.

It's a chore trying to find inner foams that fit but with patience and perseverance you can usually get quite close, even if it means a bit of 'modification'. Good luck.

Surprisingly, on my phone I couldn't hear the pops but overall it sounded better with the foam and without the foam it's sounded a bit tinny or metallic on the high end.

Were you using headphones? The phone speaker has almost no bass... remove bass and you remove pops, this is partly why sound engineers routinely cut bass - as do mic manufacutrers. Many singers do not hone their technique in this regard... fair enough. Regarding the treble. Hi-fi speaker manufacturers often specify that you listen with grilles on or off. The grilles stop your kids from trashing your expensive drivers but they reduce and smear treble. If manufacturers build for grilles on, then removing them will increase treble (resolution) and will slightly upset the intended balance. Maybe this is what you are hearing!
