    A lot of products are made by contract with independent Chinese factories. Sometimes, I think when the contract supply is met, and the factory still has excess parts, they bootleg them and sell them on eBay as knockoffs. I had a fake beta58a. It sounded very close to the real thing. The blue band on the grille was chinch and quickly fell off. Also, it had a slight petroleum smell.

    What I'm noticing is that the Earthworks mic sounds like it's adding unnatural more eq, especially on the low end. The Rode mic sounds electronic and hollow. The SE mic sounds the most natural. You called it "Up There"? I call it most natural. You are just used to your Earthworks sound that you may be used to it supposed sounding like your own voice, but is actually more modified sound.

      Thanks for your input. I sold the sE some time ago and can't really remember the sound other than thinking I don't need yet another 'shaped' mic - no particular critcism of sE, they're all at it. The mic was given to me but if I was on a budget and didn't have mics that already do what it does?? I looked at the frequency plot on the sE website and the mic is comendably flat until it pushes at 4-5 kHz and then even more at 10-15 kHz. I have reduced my salt and sugar intake and now that sort of thing is all a bit much for my taste but... each to his/her own. Good luck.

    Anton my wife uses a Nuemann kms 105 for live performances as well in our studio when we do acoustic stuff. A sound engineer told me these high end mics boost the highs and he was fighting it all night, and we've been dealing with some feedback issues and cutting above the band. We are a 5 piece country band. In the studio I don't hear much for added highs, I actually hear a pretty flat mic which takes very little eq. I love it, my big obstacle is the feedback. Would we be better to use a preamp live, I'm looking at the portable neve single mic pre or is there a dynamic mic you would recommend? She has a very powerful voice meaning she projects without a mic better than most with a mic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Here is our recent track you can hear her voice. Thanks! Any time a good product changes for the worse, it's always to increase profits. Sacrifice quality to cut manufacturing costs in half, leave the price tag the same. People will still buy it even if they know what's going on, because they are too lazy to boycott or do the research needed to find a better deal. They're familiar with the brand and to the untrained ear it sounds close enough, so they'll just go with the easiest choice and buy it.

    Beta 58a was manufactured in Mexico, and since 2017 in China. Both had gold-plated pins. Literally, there is no original beta 58a on planet Earth without gold-plated pins. And I repeat, 15 years ago there were also a lot of fakes.

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You mean they go to all the trouble of realistically faking the mic - including the box and paperwork - and... forget to at least colour the pins gold? The pins can be checked in an isntant!!! What kind of fakers are they?

    • @alexmegavolt9010
      @alexmegavolt9010 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Exactly! Often, they cannot perform such technical operations. There are more fake microphones on the market than original ones, this is a huge volume, this is factory scale production. Coating the pins means rebuilding the production cycle, which makes products more expensive, so why do it if 9 out of 10 customers don't notice it? Another example is that during a certain period of time, shure marked the capsule (let me remind you, there was no marking on your copy) with paint dots, it is very easy to forge such a marking, but they did not repeat this marking in counterfeit factories. Why? I repeat, it is economically unprofitable, most users do not pay attention to it. In my opinion, any review of a shure microphone should start with confirming its authenticity, otherwise you will waste time reviewing a fake. The easiest way is to buy a microphone from official representatives, otherwise you need to spend many hours (like me) on forums, watch dozens of videos, and learn how to identify fakes.

      Hi Anton, your friend's shure beta 58a looks genuine overall, except for the silver pins on the XLR connector. Perhaps you could ask your friend if they replaced the original gold pins with silver ones. It’s possible that the XLR detail was swapped. Another thing to consider is the accessories. For example, the microphone carry pouch doesn’t seem genuine to me. However, apart from these details, the microphone itself really looks authentic.

    Very good review and analysis of this handling problem. I work in the video/film business as a production sound mixer. The biggest challenge with using a handheld boom pole with sensitive condenser mics is handling and cable noise. Good shockmounts are essential, and there have been many attempts to design effective mounts. With more and more boom mic setups using wireless transmission, mechanical noise from the cable have been eliminated but I still wear gloves to dampen boom handling noise. Could Michael Jackson been on to something with his gloves?

    It’s extremely doubtful that any of the three would be clones. They all are legit. The old USA one is consistent with mine which are from the ‘70s and I’ve refurbished. The Beta 58 does have a transformer, but it’s in the handle, as with the others. The windscreen/grill is actually very specific as it forms an acoustic tuned chamber that does affect the response curve. The non-Shure grill would definitely change the sound. If you CAREFULLY open up the handle, there is a manufacturing date code inside. Your thought that the oldest one has a more “open sound” is true with mine too and is consistent with a lot of other people’s observations. My oldest first-gen ones are from 1975 and 1978. As yours has the internal impedance switch, I think yours is pre-1982. (I’d have to Google the year that change was made). The wear on the handle is from someone using the microphone who had rings on their hands and also used a lot of lotion. The nicks are from the rings, the corrosion in the finish is from the lotion. The miracle is that Shure has been able to keep the microphones so incredibly consistent over 50+ years in spite of the repeated changes in manufacturing, components and design.

      Thanks for the information and confirmation. Regarding the Beta 58, Shure says 'The Beta 58A has a completely new cartridge in it. While the new cartridge is meant to mimic the old cartridge as far as polar pattern, output level, and frequency response goes, it is a different cartridge and will sound slightly different. Two major differences are that we removed the hum bucking coil on the new model and added an output transformer.' To me, this implies that the old model (Beta 58) didn't have an output transformer?

    The SM58 USA does sound clearer.

    Happy New Year! I have always been interested in the original Beta 57 and the newer model, if there’s a difference. I just always liked the design of the original Beta 57…
