    I like the DPA d:facto and the IconPro better than the KMS 104 in terms.of lower frequency detail -- especially in the low mid where there doesn't seem to be as much detail -- not muddy, but less detailed -- less precise. I've used an AKG C636 which seems a similar to the DPA 2028, but I've never done an A/B comparison with them. The DPA 2028 is probably really close to the DPA d:facto linear since they use the same transducer technology. They are all three really nice mics. All three detailed. All three have clarity. Depending on what parts of the voice you want the precision, definition, and detail focused.

    I know this is an older video now but thought I’d comment in case you are still dealing with this and a possible solution could still help. To my ears, this sounds like regular old high-frequency feedback. It is incredibly piercing and I cannot even listen to it. I have to shut my speakers off when it plays. Typically, RF interference has a bit of a repeating pattern to it and doesn’t shriek like feedback. It is pretty easy to find samples of what that type of interference sounds like and it is rather different from what is happening here. As for the cause of this, I would surmise it is a combination of the very wide dispersion of the Bose systems and the high sensitivity and wide frequency response of the microphones you are using. If I recall correctly, the L1 systems have around 180 degrees of horizontal dispersion and the 802s have a dispersion of 120 degrees. Many more conventional 2 way horn-loaded point-source boxes have horizontal dispersion more along the lines of 75 degrees. That can make it easier to direct sound where you want it and have an easier time using the areas of lower sensitivity of both the microphone and the speakers to your advantage, but you will not get as even and natural of coverage as you would with the Bose approach, so there are always trade-offs and pros and cons to the different systems. As a test, I would try setting up the Bose system completely out in front of the location of the microphone and see if you can get higher volumes without this happening. As for the solution, the best solution to such a circumstance is to have a knowledgeable sound engineer helping to set up your system with optimum speaker and microphone placement, and dialing in EQ and other parameters during the performance to get the best sound and combat any issues. However, especially on a lot of smaller gigs, this is not always possible or practical and you end up needing to setup your gear yourself and leave it to run during the performance. For this circumstance, I’d recommend you keeping an eye on the used market for a Sabine FBX solo, Behringer Shark FBQ100, or DBX GoRack. All three of those are smaller processors with automatic feedback suppression that works pretty decently at notching out that feedback without doing too much destruction to the sound otherwise. Unfortunately, all have been discontinued and to get that functionality on the new market, you will need a larger and more expensive rack mount processor. But, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find one of those three for a reasonable price, and that could help you with using those higher sensitivity and wider bandwidth condenser mics with your live systems.

      @AntonBrowne 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your input, further testing is required. For the moment, I don't use the Earthworks mics with any of the Bose systems which is a shame. What surprises me is that when using the SR314 with the Bose Compact in a posh hotel, the Bose was a fair distance from the mic and being in a posh hotel I started with a very low volume. Some people immediately noticed the sound even though the volume was way below normal feedback onset. What doesn't help is that I can't hear most of it (too high a frequency) so I can't trust myself when setting up, thus I use a dynamic. I will have to test away from a gig with some younger people present!

    • @nickr5213
      @nickr5213 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AntonBrowne Ah yes! I was thinking of that. I believe you mentioned something about that in this video as well, and that is very much of interest. Typically a bit of distance and a low volume would be the remedy for feedback, and having this sound appear points to other factors beyond just feedback, but without hearing it to know, I wouldn’t be able to offer any input. I do feel it is a shame that you have been unable to use your Earthworks and Bose systems together and was hoping I could help. If you have a friend or know someone that is a sound engineer that could help you troubleshoot, it might be helpful because they might be able to help you solve it for certain. This is the kind of thing I have enjoyed successfully troubleshooting in the past, and always learn something from working on. Unfortunately I am quite far away so I would be unable to come and work on it. But it would be nice for you to be able to use your Earthworks and Neumann mics live.

      @@AntonBrowne Oh! One other thing. I saw you mention that you use a TC Helicon Perform V? I just looked that up and it looks like it has a feedback suppressor built in? Have you ever tried that? I have never used one of those so I am not sure if the processing is as good or effective as the algorithms that DBX and Sabine use, but since you already own that device, it might be worth a try to experiment with utilizing that function.

    Hello Anton, you have quite the singing range and voice Many years ago I found foam replacements out of the states to replace my driver foams. Unfortunately I dropped one of them from the stand right on the corner of the speaker and it damaged the box and about 4 of the speakers. I was able to get a 802 series II really cheap. I had them both connected and I'm getting more bass and sound out of the series II then the regular 802. Did you happen to notice a difference in the sound of the 802 and the 802 series II? I believe the specs are the same. I'm just wondering if it has to do with the foam replacement job I did. Any comment would be greatly appreciated.

    @AntonBrowne I've been pondering this exact question, When recording in a non-professionally treated room, why not use a good quality stage condenser mic to take most of the room out of the equation when compressing? It seems like a smart choice but no-one seems to talk about it. What are your thoughts?

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe people don't think stage condensers are up to the quality, and maybe the internal foam pop screen - designed for stage - takes away more detail than a studio screen. However, I find the Earthworks SR314 a fine studio mic. The trouble with an un-treated room is that if you get loud, I think you will be able to hear the room, even if the mic is cardioid/supercardioid. Best to try it out, I think.

    • @2010Crazycanuck
      @2010Crazycanuck 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AntonBrowne Perhaps that's the reason. The loss of detail. Although any dynamic mic will also have significantly less detail than a condenser (ie the popular SM-7B). When it comes to the room, that's my experience too. You don't even have to get loud. Just stand a few feet away from the mic and you start to hear more "room" in the recording. That sweet spot of 5-7" (or closer if you want to use the proximity effect) is very real.

    I am an alto/contralto. My husband bought an excellent mic for me (he's a sound engineer) and it has a flat surface on the actual shape of my mic. It is not round. I've sung on many mics but this one is very different. I'm having a lot of trouble trying to explain to him what is happening when I sing into this mic. When I am on a round shaped mic (the metal ball around the diaphragm), it sounds like my voice is "splaying" around the outsides of the mic and there is so much lost. The flat shaped mic is almost like a "cone" in that is absorbing and drawing in all of the voice. It is a physical thing I am experiencing and he keeps telling me it's impossible that mics just don't work that way. Does this make any sense to you? The flat surface is so completely different than the round surface of other mics. Is that because the diaphragm is closer to the actual outer flat surface of the mic? I don't understand it but I even tell him that I have learned to sing "to" this mic. If I'm in a room with no mic, my voice goes everywhere and you can't hear the dynamics of my voice at all. When I sing into this mic, it captures all the harmonics that seem to "splay" around the edges of the ball shaped mics. He thinks I'm imagining things but I'm telling you, I have been a professional singer since my 20s and I'm 66 now. I've had a lot of experience in performance and in studio. I can tell the difference and it's a major difference. Am I making any sense to you or anyone on here? If you do understand this, can you explain it to me so I can explain it to him? I would appreciate any help. The mic I'm using is a Sennheiser e865. He researched mics and bought this one to enhance my voice. It does such a great job combined with the sound system we're using that people very often come up and tell us how amazing it sounds. (I'm not saying that about my voice - I'm complimenting the mic and the system.) I would really like to understand this so my husband will realize I'm not crazy. Something is really happening with the actual shape of the metal mesh covers on these mics. I really do think the shape of the metal mesh covers makes a difference. There's got to be some kind of reflective quality to what's happening when the voice hits it - doesn't it?

      Hmm, that's a curious finding. I guess the ball shape could make a difference but when you zoom in, your dealing with cirular wire - whether it's in a ball shape or flat! The grille is designed to protect the mic but let sound through with minimum interference but of course there will be some. An imperical experiment is called for. First try the mic without the grille, then with the grille but with the foam removed. Then see if you can screw on, or tape on a ball shaped grille to the same mic and repeort back with your findings. All the best.

    I am now on my second V70, for my voice, it is the best live vocal mic I've tried - and high output too compared to say an SM58. I actually prefer it for recorded vocals to my studio condenser.

    I've heard in other videos that this was your favorite.. I think. Is that still the case?

      The Earthworks SR314 gets used more if I'm going to record anything but for rough and tumble everyday gigs, I still use the M88.

    I still love M500s and have bought several over the years for live use. Love the clear top end, thanks to the ribbon, and less "woofiness" than an SM58. I do use mine with Cloudlifters so that I do not have to boost the preamp gain too high. Fantastic mic.

      Yep, great mics. It's a shame they no longer make them.

    Lovely pair. This model was worn in black by Daniel Craig in one of the Bond films if memory serves...

    Fantastic of C&J to have looked after you in that way! You are certainly passing on the word, as I bought my pair of Pembroke's on the strength of your review over four years ago... I am now the proud owner of eight pairs of Crocketts and I am so glad to have found them. Thank you truly!

    What a great singer! And that's exactly what a comparison should be, singing the same phrases in each one. Nice job! I'm looking for a mic to perform in a tribute band to Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is very thin and midy, I think the e945 would be great for it... I use a sm58, but it's a little bit bassy and the low ends stick out, what is usually good, but it's not alike Anthony Kiedis voice...
