Kenny Dixon Jr., AKA Moodymann, is one of the most enigmatic and charismatic figures in house music. Despite his refusal to give interviews and play the press-and-promo game, Dixon Jr.’s voice has been clearly amongst the loudest when it comes to preserving the rich heritage of Afro-American music while fighting the industry powers that be. Blessed with an immaculate way of sampling, he takes stems from blues and soul, and respectfully takes them onto the next level. From his dark and dusty deep house tunes on Peacefrog, Planet E and his own KDJ label, to R&B-drenched outings on the Mahogani Music imprint, Moodymann’s fingerprint is unmistakable.

I love watching this once a year - It grounds and confirms my musical perception.
Kenny is so authentic and down to earth - He and Theo Parrish created their own kind of soul music.
best RBMA interview ever. what a legend
+fitzjay01 fucking drivel, but I like his music
+Tom Edwards What's drivel?
eh... debatable. i thought it was absolutely horrible.
Nah you weren’t paying attention if you thought this interview was drivel. Dude keeps it 💯 . Here’s what he said in my more fancy language:
1. When I spin music, I will not play banal crowd pleasers. I must remain true to myself and that means playing music that is a reflection of where I come from. I will not assimilate to make people more comfortable.
2. Sign with a major label, you sacrifice creative control. Control matters more to me than money.
3. People who insist on labeling music under a multitude of genres and sub genres miss the forest for the trees. All I care about is whether the music is good.
4. Questions about the gear you own are ridiculous. Expensive equipment doesn’t necessarily result in producing good music, creativity and drive matter far more.
5. I don’t feel the need to share everything I do with the world. Sometimes I wish to keep my art private.
6. Dance music was created by black people yet we haven’t received the artistic recognition or financial compensation we deserve.
Does that still strike you as drivel?

Would love to see a fireside chat with Moodymann and Danny Brown
You can hear Detroit in his music!!!
Hearing Moodymann in person gives his GTAO character way more personality.
I bought a vinyl single of Forevernevermore in late ‘99. I didn’t know who Moodymann was at the time, and I’m not sure why the record shop had it a few months before the “official” release date. Anyway, been a Moodymann fan ever since. He showed me how stylistically expressive House Music could actually be.
“I am not the hottest motherfucking DJ in the world. And I’m not going to play the hottest tracks in the world - but what I will do is give you the truth on them turntables"...
Moodyman explores more on his music, and how Prince influenced him: daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2017/05/moodymann-and-prince
We're still watching! 3019
Haven’t watched this in years. Still fresh
"[I] didn't want to pretend like I was a white man, or a black man, or any other race. I just wanted people to hear my music. Fuck the DJ, the talent is on the turntables."
"Ima tell you something, it ain't what you got, its what you do with what you have, you understand? And, it ain't you do, its how you do it."
On what min is this quote?

feelin moody
I think we should applaud KDJ every time he's giving some advice for us
As far as inspirations, there's nothing like beautiful black women. I don't give a fuck what nobody say. So I'm gonna have them with me. It inspires me. It's a part of my life. So I got to have them on stage at all times. If I stumble sometimes on my own stage, and I don't know what Imma gonna say, I just stumble or I could be doin' something, the band's fucked up or fucked up from shit, or I don't know where I'm at - all I need to do is turn around and look at one of these black sisters and Imma get right back on track baby, you understand?
Stay steezy lofi squad
