- Reclusive producer extraordinaire Otis Jackson Jr. AKA Madlib discussed Prince, the importance of doing taxes, the death of his Quasimoto alter-ego, collaborating with Kanye West and his love of industrial music in this rare public lecture as part of RBMA Festival NYC 2016. #RBMA #madlib #beats

20:29 - Sampling
27:07 - Freddie Gibbs
33:12 - J Dilla
45:38 - Quasimoto
56:10 - MF Doom
Since the early ‘90s, the reclusive Madlib has been producing music at a relentless pace. Whether he’s working with artists like Freddie Gibbs, MF Doom or Erykah Badu, collaborating with the late J Dilla, or working under one of his own aliases, like the drugged out party creature Quasimoto, Madlib has carved out his own idiosyncratic corner in the massive hip-hop universe.

Interviewer: How u do dis, Madlib?
Madlib: Swag
W
Myles TheWeedPileSmoker haha i follow u on ig. Tf u doing here lmao
In so many words, exactly! lol
Hell yeah
@No Thanks wow. well, that was a loaded response. did Madlib do something that hurt you or is sampling your #1 enemy? im interested..
Madlib speaks thru his beats, which is why he's not much of a talker.
Mark Hazleton only the greatest in my opinion.
highsociety He's second to Jay Dee but he's nearly just as big a legend
The Shaolin seems like a bit of an insult when madlib is also a rapper as Quasimodo.
The Shaolin I think he’s better than Dilla the beats on the Quasimoto albums are ridiculous
Batter Wottle wrong, listen to Donuts
Kinda like Madlib doesn't understand the concept of interviews.....which makes me enjoy this even more.
That's what happens when you don't have any human contact the only contact he has is with records 😂 big up Madlib
I thought that at first but I think he just likes to keep it short and sweet. I didn't think the interviewer asked very good questions either.
FriendsWit DaDealer he's actin like he don't like ol boy for some reason or he's being a d.k.hd on purpose???
Kip Colbert Madlib be playing around
He just doesn't give a shit about the interviews and I love it
I got 20 tracks with DOOM that don't mean I'm going to put them out. I have never heard something more Painful
been waiting for years
Yeah imagine all the shit he has locked away. Probably all kinds of collabs we have no idea about
Madlib has only released 30% of all his music
Madlib once said that he has an album of Kanye and Kendrick rapping over his beats, so it’s even more painful
@@leanhngo2944 Im a Cynic I dont thats coming out because the label execs would stop that. I wonder, if will see the Pusha T Madlib album. Madlib has own label, Madvillany the Sequel should be able too come out
"He's a fellow alien...its hard to explain dude" this statement says so much about dilla and madlibs relationship
My best friend has uh song with Madlib. It makes sense though hes uh fellow Alien. Kind of jealous of my homie i need uh madlib beat 2 lol.
That quote is insane
It's hard for Madlib to explain anything.
Madlib with a beard turned into Dadlib
more like a wax head, Dablib
Lol 😂
Daddylib
He’s had one since like before 96
pretty sure that man is a muslim. You'll seeh im, when he had no beard he usually is wearing a hat. That's a religious thing.
Shouts out to the interviewer. My dude earned his check on this one. Interviewing Madlib is like extracting Uranium. Painstaking, but when you're done, you get some powerful shit.
Word
I feel like he could have did a better job. It’s obvious Madlib doesn’t like talking about himself. He was always way more open to talk about the music and artists he’s interested in. You need to adapt and go in those directions and from there you learn about madlib
They also should have talked about gear and instruments. Asking generic process questions didn’t go anywhere
Yo Madlib is funny as hell!! He has a weird sense of humor.
71dhwand exactly. I think people just don’t understand that side of him
yea he is fukin around and people here missing it thinking hes being bland
I don't think the interviewer is bad overall (his interview with DOOM is excellent), but he certainly doesn't capitalize on the (few) moments when Madlib actually seems willing to say more about a particular topic. For example, when Madlib says he made the "No More Parties in LA" beat on an iPad the interviewer should do everything possible to keep Madlib talking about that. Instead he says "oh that's interesting" and moves on... Missed opportunities.
It really isnt that surprising. Madlib made the unseen on technology that was way more rudimentary than what you can do on a modern day iPad.
To be fair this style probably would work with most people. But people such as Madlib you gotta be an incredible interviewer.
His MF DOOM interview was legendary, everybody has a bad day at the office I suppose
Interview timing, this could have easily been 6 hours
@Curtis Steele literall answers .. lol . Some people have an art of wrapping up convos this way .. whilst others spend 20 minutes scating round the bushes
Interviewer: Explain how you did this.
Madlib: I don’t really think about it I just do it.
You can’t explain something thats done when you’re in that zone like making beats. It just happens. Its like asking someone How does your heart pump?
The fact that Madlib doesn't understand the concept of interviews bc he don't like too much attention makes me admire him even more as an artist. He's definitely the type of dude that lets the music speaks for himself! A TRUE LEGEND!
Hey 😢😢😢😢😊😢😢😊😢😊😢😊😢😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😅😅up and and 😊😊😊
The good ol’ sigma producer attitude
@@santiagoanayaviayra8409Madlib is top prestige Edgemaxxer! He mogs everyone
I can tell Madlib very much wanted to get the hell out of there asap, but this is much like all his other interviews, he answers the questions as best as he can and nods and you can tell his mind is racing with other matters, probably music. He's very hard to pin down, and his musical output very much reflects his artistic personality. He's a treasure.
Alexander Mathew beautifully put. I see a lot of dude in myself.
James Jeffery oh scuse me bro i was just thinkin you was a hater, but genius are always seen like that just because they different
Kopagreg maybe you don't understand the concept of autism. People don't look autistic maybe you're thinking of down syndrome. Autism has degrees there is high functioning autism and low-functioning autism and based on which end of the spectrum euron dictates exactly how well you can function in everyday Society. There's nothing wrong with assuming that Mad Lib Maybe some form of autistic or OCD or even ADHD these sorts of mental conditions often accompany people of High Intelligence or artistic capability. Peace
That and he's a Scorpio
Score_ Sнaĸυr i make beats hit the link figured he was. I’m the same way
The interviewer did a good job working with madlib to prolong the conversation. He knew how to respectfully dig and he tried to make the interview/lecture as comfortable as possible in my opinion
Yeah people saying he's boring or has bad questions. They're just having a relaxed convo and a good time. Not every talk has to be the deepest and they are strangers to each other after all, and I would def be nervous af talking to madlib. I think it was great
chairman mao is a real 1
great interview
Nah interviewer sucks
“I just do the music” is a quote I’m inspired by in every part of my life. My bad if I’m sounding corny but his humbleness is something I aim to achieve as well... Depsite making some of the best music I’ve heard, he still carries himself like a regular dude.
Madlib is dressed like his discography. Sophisticated and timeless art
I'm happy just to see a Madlib interview.
YESS
You can tell madlib is a true artist. He's not concerned with talking about or going back to his previous work but just about what he's gonna do next
Props to Mao for trying so hard to draw answers out.
Not an easy man to interview, that's for sure.
I love Madlib, but he is NOT good at being interviewed.
yeah man that must have took balls. You could tell at times he was uneasy
forreal
I mean Madlib’s from Oxnard. And he has such a serious and focused demeanor that his presence seems to be intimidating for an interview. He seems like the kinda person that knows that, and uses it to mess with people 😂
This dude made a Prince beattape. Now i know i cant be the only one that want to hear that
"I like some human mistake in my shit".
40:35
I read this exactly as he said it :L
Producers who are introvert or shy is due to the heavy creative process and this also involved thier inner feelings used to create music. This process creates a strange awkwardness when they speak to the public due to sound absorbing. The creative process uses thier minds and captivates them into sound alone. Madlib speaks through music and music only. He has secrets of Dilla he will never reveal. I don't know if this makes sense as it's not easy to put your finger on it. R.I.P James Yancey
HMZ ...dilla saw in him , a person he could bequeath his master moves to before he was called to go back to the essence. He saw in him a fellow seeker. A fellow jedi of a sorts.
Dudes just an introvert it aint that deep
All love here..loves it man
@@VinylGuruOfficial Lmfaoo mfs doing too much
you officially the corniest mf ive ever seen
Hes not comfortable conforming to other peoples energy. He stays in his own
I can relate to him. I enjoyed this.
Rolled a blunt, sat down to see this upload.
Thanks Red Bull this is my Monday evening sorted.
I love this. Madlib is lowkey funny in a weird way. Very eccentric
Madlib is so Unique. He's a GREAT guy. There is no one as humble as him being extremely talented. We adore you Otis Jackson Jr. Madlib!!!!
Madlib is the truth. Very underrated producer. Needs more props.
Underrated? More props?? Madlib is literally in everyone's top 10 all time. Top 25 at most
+Tyree Harris I was speaking under rated as he kind of flys under the radar. In conversations when you hear about the Goats of beat making his name is glossed over. You hear Dilla, Primo, Dre, Kanye, Pete Rock etc. but Madlib kind of flies under the radar of discussion. True headz know about him. I was on his stuff from the Lootpack
being under the radar and still do your thing is the place to be.
"underrated' is one of the most misused words..
That's his zone though. He doesn't care about the fame. One of the most modest individuals I have seen talk. It's like he is famous, but not at the same time. That perfect balance. Madlib is definitely in my top 5 producers or top 3 no question. Madlib is the most abstract producer out of all those you mentioned though imo. He isn't meant for everybody. He is meant for those that don't limit themselves to one way of thought, especially on music. He does hip hop through all the genres of music. Has that universal vibe to him. Kind of why he is an alien. I just can't understand how Dilla and Madlib were able to know each other at the same time in the same places doing the same godly work that they do. It's insane. They both were born and raised around music day in and day out. And this is the result of that. 2 of the best hip hop producer/emotion to motion creators I to have done what they do. That's the power of music and love right there. Nothing else matters, but that to them. That's what living is about.
Mitchem Callahan Good points I agree. Both of them our musical geniuses...
Be sure to click on "subtitles / cc" once the audience questions start. Sorry about the sound issues!
+Red Bull Music Academy How do you let Madlib refer to making a beat on an iPad without following up with a question about the app(s) that he used to make the beat? Come on, man! You're asking him about his creative process (and it was difficult enough to get him to divulge much about that) but then you just let the iPad music production thing pass without further exploration? Geez.
+Jesse Tal He only mentioned the ipad when he talks about giving it to his kids to keep em occupied while he makes beats.
But he said he made the "No More Parties in LA" beat on it, unless he was joshing.
+uniqueterror That seems to be the case. It just would have been good to know what iOS apps were used in the production of the beat.
+uniqueterror oh really, I musta missed that bit
madlib - one of the last true dope dudes in the industry. Forget about the content of his beats....the dude alone is such a rare gem. Hiphop forever.
Madlib has evolved since the cassette days back in 2002, now he burns his stuff onto CDs
Such a humble and chilled soul , I love you Madlib
Starting to appreciate the 'do it' approach. Not getting lost in the science of creating
entire interview... interviewer: awkward pause, then question.. Madlib: 3 word answer, then awkward pause .....rinse and repeat....awkwardly
Yeah, I agree. He's a terrible interview. Like pulling teeth just to get an answer. I guess all of his expression is directed into the music :-/
well cause Madlib thinks before he talks
Madlib thinks, makes 5 beats, drinks a coffee and chats with Quas, before he talks.
He doesn't like doing interviews.
water is wet....
This makes me feel so much. It's like hearing myself from the future talking about what I'm doing now. Bless this man. Endlessly inspired and endlessly inspiring
How I wish *Dilla* was there! Rest in Peace dilladawg!
Madlib's was Dilla's inspiration
Dilla will always be here.

-my heart dropped for like 10 seconds
😂
Yo I randomly thought about this part of the interview today and I’m glad to find someone mentioned this in the comments.
Everybody was probably like 😳 with anxiety and tension thinkin he was serious 😂
Exactly 💀
Thank you for this interview. Madlib is such an inspiration for many musicians including myself. His knowledge of music and his approach to it really motivates me to keep going. He is an Artist with a capital "A". He cares about it and wants to learn more and more, never satisfied. He always mentions great artists like Sun Ra, Lonnie Liston Smith, MF Doom, J Dilla or John Coltrane. By studying him you learn a lot. People nowadays are so focused on the technical aspect (like mixing) instead of the creative input of the artist. OK, those things are important but in the long run what matters are the ideas that the artist provides to the culture. Him learning all those instruments is also so fascinating and motivates me to do the same. He is a real artist and i'm glad that his name becomes a bit more mainstream because he deserves it. In a few years people will realize who he was and they will be blown away. Shout out to the Bad Kid !
Madlib gives such a good interview always. He’s reluctant, but so cool about it.
this man is a man of music, that's all his essence consists of. I love his approach to music and how he doesn't care what anyone thinks. He's all about the music and I respect him greatly for it.
He mentioned Bandana and I had to check the date again lol
Same lol
wow. i love his music over decade already. but still inspiring so many ways.

loveee this guy my fav producer and one of the best to get a chance to bless the game
Can literally feel the positivity through his personality. I can relate with the silliness also.
With JDilla knocking down the doors
of Hip Hop's House of production and Madlib Crashing thru the ceiling of that same House, our Culture of sound is now Homeless and free to become artistic nomads. I have nothing but
joy and love for this new outlook, it makes the future of music bright with hope. Just imagine a Madlib and Qtip together on a whole project so Bliss....
i love his work so much man, literally a dream of mine to see him work his magic
It's a trip how similar Madlib is to Dilla. Idk if it's that lib is just so influenced by him or that they're just that similar. Also, it is so refreshing to see someone who is so profound at their craft be so humble & down-to-earth. Dude's a living legend & I feel lucky to be listening to his music while he's still alive. 1love
Space Martian . yes
i think dilla was more influenced by lib than lib was dilla. if donuts didnt have dillas name on it i wouldve assumed it was a madlib tape
madlib said meeting dilla was like meeting another alien
Professor Madlib, with the unseen curriculum! 👏🏽💡🔥

Big big respek to Madlib. I like my geniuses to be a lil awkward and withdrawn.
This is a legendary interview! Madlib rarely do these
So much respect for this dude. I like how he can't resist looking in the crate during questions.
Everybody talks about the Madvillian Lp quite rightly as a mad MF DOOM vinyl collector myself but my favourite Madlib album production wise was Lootpack Sounpieces Da Antidote in 1999 the production was ......if you haven’t checked it and your a madlib fan that album was the most perfect “madlib” production.the first time I listened to it,it blew my fuckin mind, words can’t do it justice!
Side note-When Soundpieces Da Antidote came out it got 3mics in the Source which is hip hop blasphemy,Peanut Butter Wolf who as the head of Stones Throw was in Lootpacks corner & he sent a note to the reviewer in the next months letters page of the source basically saying “WTF!How the fuck can you give this masterpiece anything but a five mics,ya’ll are sleeping watch”I’m paraphrasing but that was the main point, history has proven Wolf 100% correct & the source 100% wrong.
Madlib is cool af. Good sense of humor, man of few words, just relaxed and at peace. Really enjoyed this interview
my man is the Best! #1 to me. Madlb salute, Peace and love.
one of my top ten producers of all time.
#1 for me. Right in front of Dilla.
for everyone giving shit about the interviewer..this is Chairman Mao; from the golden era of The Source
I love this man SO much bruh
yes! sick! madlib's a genius. thanks rbma
The Jaylib album was a masterpiece of two sampling geniuses. Madlib talks through his music for sure.
I've been a fan of madlib for YEARS and had no idea what he looked like, wow
he's changed up his look a little bit. kinda has the Drake style hair and beard now lol
+ljxela drake style??? Otis has looked like this for a few years
Really? I don't mean to be rude, but what kept you from searching him on Google Images, etc.?
Sinclair Lewis Lol no idea, just never cared to look up what a producer looked like
Gotta keep up the mystique i feel that
The man is chill, a bit shy and obscenely talented.

Madlib is just how I expected him to be.
He doesn't really like/care about talking with people, it's always been about the music and the experiences he has with it. Props to the interviewer for trying to get him to open up, though. It was a valiant effort.
Mad Lib is so well versed and broad in his knowledge of current producers, previous, global musicians, music styles..literally makes sense why his music is so unbelievably good
The interviews at RBMA are always very nervous and star struck, but they’re clearly fans and know a lot about the artist. It’s really cool and endearing and I much prefer it to interviewers who are clearly just doing an assignment and asking questions they already know answers to.
Why is this interview not being done my Nardwuar?

Love Madlib... he just does it... 'polishing beats for weeks... i dont mess with that..." lol... love his intuition and relentlessness
Such a one of a kind human man, Amazing amazing artist.
love this mans work
Madlib is basically the textbook example of a genius. I'm not really too surprised about what we're seeing here. He would be hard-work for any interviewer. Thankfully, he doesn't have to speak or explain himself, but rather he music does that for him.
what a tense interview xd
This is a very good interview. Mad lib is very relaxed and pleasant to watch. My daughters think so especially.
