The Detroit artist Moodymann has redefined house music over the last 20 years, all while remaining an unknowable cult hero. He rarely speaks to the press, and has been interviewed only a handful of times. He’s an artist whose intentions and backstory are often difficult to explain. Yet his work is littered with deeply personal references.
In this video essay, the second in a new series, we attempt to unravel the mystery Moodymann.

Authenticity.
I've always been a massive fan of his. For me, the persona isn't as important as the music he makes, which after all these years is still totally unique, but the persona is very much part of the package for Moodymann.
Whatever about the authenticity of playing vinyl or living in Detroit, the cleverness of his sampling and the atmosphere of his music is truly original, having been to Detroit his records really embed the rhythm and culture of that city.
On the minus side, I don't think it's fair to "demystify" someone in just over six minutes, but I enjoyed it as a piece of film.

Nice unraveling, guys. Moodymann is a genius, but this is garbage. He has a "powerful sense of authenticity" because he plays vinyl and uses an MPC to create music? Get an MPC and some vinyls and move to Detroit and you can be authentic too.
