I owe you a big thank you for this! But I want to tell you what happened with me, it might help someone else out. My Whirlpool was spinning but not agitating, after your video I ordered a shift actuator- BUT I got a knock off brand, put it in and the washer STILL didn't work. I was really pulling my hair out, because it really seemed like the problem was the shift actuator, but it still didn't work with a new part?! finally called an appliance guy [for a mere $140] and he said the problem WAS the new part; the specs were off just enough to cause a problem. Long story less long, I got the part from Maytag, put it in and BOOYAH! Success. Also- Maytag redesigned it so it looks different from the original [mine was the rust colored one]. There is an extra compartment where the wire hub gets connected. For whatever that's worth. Thanks again for posting, and maybe my aggravation could spare someone else.
Couldn’t figure out why my clothes just didn’t smell and look as clean and this was the issue, except the arm wasn’t broken the rod somehow was not in the hook part. Thanks for the video 👍🏼
Dude, I just found the same thing after having to do the repair in this video, I almost think it might be a design feature to make their warranty work less costly. Think about it, if something really jams up the agitator (like a $1.05 in change in my case) it's better for the arm to bend and pop out than break. Pretty ingenious on their part, it's like a free reset once you unjam the agitator.
Good video. I have a washer that gets stuck in spin sometimes. Replaced the actuator motor years ago with the same symptoms. Time for new plastic motor.
You are GREAT!!! Thank you SO much. I subscribed of course, to help support the good work you do for all of us out here. This is a great video: clear, short, and provides ALL the info we need to know 🙏 👍🏼❤
I like this video,it's the same way with my whirlpool washer machine that doesn't agitate too well,so I can get another new shift actuator to have my washer machine to cycle & agitate to wash clothes well.
I replaced the shift actuator on the same exact model washer whirlpool. It still wont agitate or leave the “sensing” cycle. The belt is fine the motor spins freely not locked up or anything. However during calibration cycle it stopped before 3 minutes and made a loud grinding sound and stopped calibrating
I stuck the striker in the lid lock by removing it from the lid with which it is fastened on with two t-10 screws. Should be only done for testing/diagnostic purposes.
Thanks for the videos. I have a question. Our whirlpool washer is about 10 years old. It was exposed to some cold draft when we tried to use it. It was during the extreme cold wave which made our utility room cold near the floor. In drain mode just a loud buzzz then I quickly unplugged it. Then I tryed to start it again and nothing. Im thinking the water pump had Ice in it. But I cant get it to fill or don anything now. thinking I might have broke something. Any ideas?
Most likely, the clutch is stuck (it is the part the shifter is actually moving). I have a video on how to replace it: th-cam.com/video/CfDhnqsvoyU/w-d-xo.html
Our whirlpool machine did exactly like in your video, the clicking noise and not agitating. The only difference was that our arm on the actuator was stiff and not loose like in your video. We replaced it anyways as we saw other videos explaining that the sensors might be shot. Despite replacing the actuator, it is still making the clicking sound and not agitating. What else could we do? I'm just about to give up....
Thanks for this video. My kenmore washer made the same noise and I bought a new shift agitator and it broke after 3 washes. Is there something else possibly wrong? It will spin but won't agitate when in wash mode. I did notice my original part that failed is a 4W and the ones they sell now are 2.8W. I just don't know what else to do at this point.
I would first check to see if the clutch moves freely when moving it up and down with your hand. If in doubt, replace the clutch and actuator as a pair. Good thing about Amazon is that they have a good return policy.
Thank you very much 😊. New Subscriber here 😀, you are a life saver. I love your videos, I will definitely watch like and share your videos. One love ❤.
Hi there. My washer will spin but not agitate. From watching your videos, it looks like the shifter/actuator must be broken. It's juts a small Haier portable washer (HLPN21) and I've already fitted a new belt. Do you know how to fix/replace that part? It looks nothing like this one, unfortunately. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words. Honestly, I have had no issues buying from Amazon. I have bought shifters, motor couplers, etc. with no issues. The only thing I am a bit skeptical about is suspension rods but if they last 2 years instead of 4, I think it's worth the gamble. But some people only swear by OEM.
Does the shifter assembly also put it in drain mode? My booklet is showing its either lower machine harness or replace pump motor... my problem is when it goes to drain mode there is a humming sound, even when i put it in manual mode to check drain pump it still has the humming and will not drain... also sometimes when i leave washer unplugged for a period of time its like it resets it and i can get the drain pump to drain... i dont want to test all the continuity points so the booklet says if its a stuck pump replace pump... if so dobu have any videos for that?
A lot of grease is never a good sign it could mean the transmission is leaking. I would replace the actuator and see if the machine works ok but it may only be a matter of time...
Thank you for your video. My whirlpool top load stacked washer/dryer: the washer is doing as your video shows. The repair fella from the appliance store said by a new one, the gear case needs replacing. He said it was leaking oil? Where do I purchase the part you show in your video? New subscriber here. Thanks again!
If the gearcase is bad then replacing the shifter will do you no good. But the shifters are available on Amazon and can be searched for by part number (there really are only two types for whirlpool a black colored one and a red one) tip the washer back and have a look. Also look down there at your gearcase, if your gearcase is leaking oil then that pretty much means you need a new washer.
My whirlpool WTW4816FW1 needed the agitator dogs so i replaced them but then it kept making the noise yours makes and washed just like yours so i changed the mode motor and it atill does it. Any idea what it might be? It does the exact thing this machine does.
Have same mashine different mode shifter but it won't agitate agitator spins free from top or i can spind shaft on bottom but not the top agitator part. Mode shift selects fine no fork broken aspins fine lid cloaes fine pump is fine but no agitating is the only thing. Could it be the transmission?
great video. I took our agitator apart thinking it was the dogs, but this machine doesnt have agitator dogs. Agiatator spins with the drum by hand. Can the shift mechanism you repaired be the problem? Thanks
So, before I buy a new shifter in Canada, $100, I have one more question. The shifter and clutch behave exactly as in your video. If moving the clutch by hand, and turning the pulley, shouldnt the agitator rotate? No matter what position I move the shifter to, only the drum spins. Thank you
@166rodney switching the position of the clutch should engage and disengage the agitator. If this is not happening perhaps your agitator plate js worn or your basket drive hub is stripped.
I have a similar machine. I replaced the actuator like you did here. The error codes tells I might have an issue with the water pressure switch but I am not finding much for this style washer on that part. With the Soil selector instead of a water level selector knob. Would love to hear what you know? Error codes are F8E1 & F3E1
F8E1 means water supply valves are not fully open or partially open. Turn the water supply fully open so that there's a pressure going in. F3E1 means your water is so slow or no water detected, check your host, pipes, wires, or the main control board.
I have a Kenmore and I have a question I have replaced everything possible on it and when the trouble started it made this horrible screeching noise so then I checked everything out everything look good but it was spinning and not washing there was nothing wrong with my shifter switch there was nothing wrong with the clutch the gears were not worn or torn and now I've recalibrated it and it's like washing but not spinning can you help please you're really a lifesaver???? It's the 500 series??
Is it showing any errors in the diagnostic mode? I have a few videos on how to get into diagnostic mode on kenmore/whirlpool/maytag washers. You installed a new shifter as well? Most of the time the shifter arm is ok but the position sensor on the shifter is broken
@@DuctTapeMechanic it was spending an not washing. Now it's washing an not spinning so I really don't understand all the error codes ? Thank for your help an videos am better with video .
@@DuctTapeMechanic I even checked the water an lid lock . everything is working but not all the way correct thank u...i love to see videos I looking 4 one how to tell what error codes is what?
There are only two types of shifters a black one and a red one. They are on Amazon for approximately $25. Whirlpool, Kenmore, amana , etc. all use these two shifters
I bought this set of washer and dryer brand new from sears before they closed and I always felt like it never got my clothes as clean as my old washer, it was making that same clicking sound when after watching this video I checked my shifter and the arm wasn’t even connected to the other part 🙃
Direct drive washer are completely different. Are the agitator dogs worn? The dogs are a simple and common issue on direct drives which causes them not to agitate properly.
I did the dogs. And that helped the top part of the agitator. Then I replaced the whole agitator with a used one with new dogs. But it's still doing the same thing.
Hey mine had this problem, spinning but not agitating. Found the broken arm on the actuator and fixed it. Worked great for 3-4 loads now all i get is a humming sounds and no spin or agitation. Any ideas?
I ran it through test mode, I can see the clutch moving smoothly into each different mode. I believe it is the capacitor. My multimeter doesn’t have capacitance. Took that out and tried to charge it by splicing the wires and then seeing if I get a shocks didn’t get one. So must be the capacitor? Is that a common failure?
Update, capacitor was bad. Threw in a new one. Worked for a few days then new capacitor blew. Must be a bad motor. All wiring is to spec, motor is a little high on pins 2-4- so must be starting to go out. Need to replace both now. 🤦🏼♂️
Help!!! We did this exact fix/replacement and it worked for 2 loads then broke again. We calibrated before the first load as well. Where are you guys getting parts that don’t break?
I had the same problem. I replaced the actuator about a year ago and it failed. This time. I replaced it with a cheaper third-party version and it lasted two loads made a horrible sound and now the washer is acting very erratic. Currently it won't even fill with water.
Hi I have replaced my shift actuator twice already. It well work good for a week and than the actuator breaks again. I'm lost on trying too figure out what else could be wrong that the actuator keeps breaking. Can you help me with this. Both new shift actuators were ordered from Amazon.
Is the shifter arm physically breaking? If it is, remove it and see if the clutch is stuck. You should be able to move the clutch lever up and down, often times these accumulate dirt and can get stuck causing the actuator to work harder then it is designed to do.
My washer will do everything but agitate. When it's supposed to be agitating, I can hear a pulsating buzz, kind of like a phone would, but it's not doing anything. It's not loud or vibrating, you wouldn't suspect anything wrong with it. I just started noticing freshly washed and dried clothes didn't smell the same. My wife uses detergent pods. I would throw one in after I filled the tub with dirty laundry and when I came back later to swap into the dryer, a few articles of clothing would have a gooey substance stuck to them and I couldn't figure it out immediately. I smelled it and it smelled like detergent. That's when the lightbulb went on that the clothes weren't being washed.
To add, the washer will fill, drain, and spin. It will go all the way through the wash cycle. I'm not digging clothes out of a tub filled with water. That's why I said, you wouldn't suspect anything wrong.
I've taken the actuator off to inspect it and I noticed that the shifter arm doesn't seem to switch. There's a lot of resistance. The question I have is how much resistance is normal? I don't want to buy a new one and it have the same amount of resistance as the one that came with the washer. I haven't been able to get the arm to switch and I don't want to force it only to break the arm off of it. The washer can still be used. I also checked the splutch switch and it has much less switch resistance. I can switch it back and forth with no problem
My Kenmore top load washer does the same thing. But when laid my washer down, my belt looks like it's been shredded. Pieces everywhere. Any idea why that happened to my belt. Was probably the reason we had a burnt rubber smell
It could still be broken as it has a motor speed sensor on it that often goes bad. I would check the belt (make sure it's not broken), check the clutch make sure its not stuck, and lastly replace the shifter (its cheap). Hopefully this helped
I’m replacing the actuator but it seems that that part where the actuator hooks into it’s stuck it won’t move down or in the middle it’s stuck at the top where you said it will spin but not agitate
@@DuctTapeMechanic Thankyou now that I replaced the actuator I’m going to see if it works now if not I will do the clutch thing next the power is out here waiting for it to start up again I got the hook thing to move in the middle and down just was tuff then it loosened up but I’m do the clutch thing if it does ent work
@@DuctTapeMechanic hey just making sure it’s making a noise like it wants to agitate but it doesn’t agitate after me changing the shifter thing you think it’s the clutch ? It’s making that noise like when it’s supposed to agitate but it’s not I think it is the clutch because that knob where the shifter is is hard to press up in the middle or down so yeah it may be the clutch

Thanks
If it's not agitating, then yes the shifter can cause that
@@DuctTapeMechanic thanks for the quick response
So, before I buy a new shifter in Canada, $100, I have one more question. The shifter and clutch behave exactly as in your video. If moving the clutch by hand, and turning the pulley, shouldnt the agitator rotate? No matter what position I move the shifter to, only the drum spins. Thank you
@166rodney switching the position of the clutch should engage and disengage the agitator. If this is not happening perhaps your agitator plate js worn or your basket drive hub is stripped.
After filling mine doesn't even try to agitate. Doesn't sound mechanical then right? Is it a fuse thing then? You got any vids?
More likely then not the issue is the shifter
Mine does the exact same thing..but should i change my capacitor as well???
Would definitely try replacing the shifter first
Algorithm bump, this was my issue. Thank you
I have a similar machine.
I been watching the video and there’s no pop up link for the part? Could you send me the link? Thanks!
That's strange jf that is the case just look at the old shifter and order the same part number from Amazon
Where do you find your specific parts needed? I'm having a hard time finding that part for my whirlpool washer. How do I know my model number?
There are only two types of shifters a black one and a red one. They are on Amazon for approximately $25. Whirlpool, Kenmore, amana , etc. all use these two shifters
Do you have a top load washer that works I'm interested
Is it the same if the agitator is a flat one and not the screw kind?
Yes should be the same for both types
I bought this set of washer and dryer brand new from sears before they closed and I always felt like it never got my clothes as clean as my old washer, it was making that same clicking sound when after watching this video I checked my shifter and the arm wasn’t even connected to the other part 🙃
Wow! Yeah, those cleaning were not getting cleaned! Lol
Mine is agitating exactly like that! But mine is a direct drive estate whirlpool. What would the problem be?
Direct drive washer are completely different. Are the agitator dogs worn? The dogs are a simple and common issue on direct drives which causes them not to agitate properly.
I did the dogs. And that helped the top part of the agitator. Then I replaced the whole agitator with a used one with new dogs. But it's still doing the same thing.
@jerigabbard6825 if it still spins ok then that means ur transmission is shot
Crap! Could it be the motor coupling?
It doesn't make any noise. Just doesn't circulate the clothes right
I can only find a AC 120V 60Hz 4W not the 2.8W. Can I still use the 4W shift actuator?
To answer my own question. Yes it can be used.
I got to a certain point but I can't find where the agitator dogs go, mine seems different. I need an adult
Hey mine had this problem, spinning but not agitating. Found the broken arm on the actuator and fixed it. Worked great for 3-4 loads now all i get is a humming sounds and no spin or agitation.
Any ideas?
After removing the broken actuator check to see if the clutch arm moved up and down smoothly. It is really stiff/stuck replace the clutch (it's cheap)
Mine will fill and drain but will not agitate or spin. Changed the aggitator dogs. Any ideas offhand?
Most likely, the mode shifter is bad
Thanks ya a life saver. God bless you
I'm this video would help me fix my whirlpool washer machine that makes that ticking noise that doesn't agitate to cycle too well.
Thank you for your advise I'm going to check the clutch.
Could be because of the age.
@@louachongjohnson2066 only 5 years old. Changed the belt, drive clutch kit, and shift actuator. no problems since.
Maytag top load mod mvw6200kw2 . Had power. Stats the sense mode then it doesn't spin just makes some noise then goes to done. PLEASE HELP!
Mine isn’t spinning but that part isn’t broken or loose like the broken one you showed
It could still be broken as it has a motor speed sensor on it that often goes bad. I would check the belt (make sure it's not broken), check the clutch make sure its not stuck, and lastly replace the shifter (its cheap). Hopefully this helped
Mine has the sensing light on. Put it in diagnostic mode. And the forst set of lights that light up are: sensing and wash. The second is: done
Great video. Thanks 🙏🏽

My Kenmore isn’t spinning/ draining the water out what could it be

I’m replacing the actuator but it seems that that part where the actuator hooks into it’s stuck it won’t move down or in the middle it’s stuck at the top where you said it will spin but not agitate
Disassemble/Remove the part (clutch) and clean/replace it. I have a video on how to replace the clutch if you are not sure
@@DuctTapeMechanic Thankyou now that I replaced the actuator I’m going to see if it works now if not I will do the clutch thing next the power is out here waiting for it to start up again I got the hook thing to move in the middle and down just was tuff then it loosened up but I’m do the clutch thing if it does ent work
@@DuctTapeMechanic what’s the video called I’m looking for it now

@@DuctTapeMechanic hey just making sure it’s making a noise like it wants to agitate but it doesn’t agitate after me changing the shifter thing you think it’s the clutch ? It’s making that noise like when it’s supposed to agitate but it’s not I think it is the clutch because that knob where the shifter is is hard to press up in the middle or down so yeah it may be the clutch
Hello I replaced the shift actuator, 3 times and still doing the same thing
The shifter kept breaking?
So I just done the calibration mode and the only thing that happened was lid lock kept clicking!HELP please
Mine wasn't connected from delivery. Took longer to clean the floor than to correct the issue.
That's strange indeed!
