Two of my Marineland Filters stopped working the same day. I had to find replacements for them and I was working on a budget. I knew I needed filters capable of doing large volumes of water. .
I bought two Cascade 300 Penn Plax hang on back filters. These filters have great media and are under 70 dollars each.
I show you how to assemble them and review them.
Looks like a decent filter.
Wish it was a bit stronger
Looks a good buy Chris
Thanks buddy
I had to laugh because near the end of the video I was thinking...I wonder how quiet it is and within a second or two you start telling us how ultra quiet it is, that's so important when you have a tank in a bedroom or Livingroom, I just checked Amazon and one guy has them for $48, that's cheap, you might want to go there to save a little $$ if you're thinking of getting a few more, I wish they came in more GPH but I guess you can always get two of them and put them on each side of the tank and it would actually be better than if you had only one bigger one in the tank, awesome review Chris.
I wish they were stronger too.
The 48 is in Us bucks.. 68 CA is about the same.
I ended up buying 3 more as there was a sale.
And had more Marineland breakdown
Good that you were able to get them on sale.
Hi Chris! Bad luck always comes twice it seems, I must say that I really like this Cascade 300 Penn Plax filter, a feature that I appreciate is the transparent plastic that shows the filter material and the flow of water in the filter to understand when it is dirty ,not all filters have transparent plastics.
Have a nice week my friend.
Unfortunately 3 more just went. One I was able to fix. Unbelievable
I like these filters were a bit stronger but they have a large box that can be filled up.
Yet another absolutely fecking awesome review there Chris my Canadian twin 💯👌🧁👍👍👍
Thanks my twisted friend
Looking good the filter 😎👌
Thanks my friend
This might be my next HOB when the time comes! I like the large capacity because I like to put terrestrial plants in my HOBs and it’s transparent plastic so I can see what’s going on inside 👀🤣
Yes. Some I have loaded up with plants already
When it rains it pours. Thanks for another great review
And three others just broke down
Wish they had a filter like that when I had so many tanks to clean. Looks like a pretty solid filter. Great review 👍
Thanks so much for watching Chris. You rock
Thanks for showing us this filter. I may have to try one 👍👍👍
Thanks Curtis. 👍
This looks a good quiet filter, I've never actually used a hang on back filter looks a nice easy setup
I need to try an indoor canister lol but I feel comfortable with these type of filters
I've only ever used canister filters. These HOB filters your using are doing the job, your tanks always look super clean and fish show great colour.
Great video chris 😊, certainly does look like a descent HOB filter mate, definitely would be better if the flow was alot stronger but apart from that its a great piece of kit. Thanks for sharing mate, full view 😊
I wish it was stronger too but with the amount of media that can be used it might make up for it
Looking great 👍
Thanks Ian
They are pretty quiet for HOBs. Might be time to face your fears Chris and get a canister filter. 😱
I know.. it may happen. Just two many nightmare canister filters with the ponds. All leaked or was next to impossible to put back together
Great review buddy❤❤❤❤
👍😁
Another excellent review video Chris 👍
They look like good filters.
Hope you're well.
Thanks buddy. Loved your latest vid. You guys had way too much fun
@@stubbsaquatics6080 They did, I didn't with my dodgy back, but they did a brilliant job, under my supervision of course 😂😂😂😂😂
Looks ace mate. Like the way it sets up and of course the customisation potential. Just a shame about the flow rate but if you're not looking for too much would be perfect.
It is a shame that it isn't more powerful.. but like you said you can really beef it up. I bought another 3
Looks like a decent filter chris, the flow does seem a bit weak in my honest opinion, but still seems like it will do the job well🙂👍🏻
Ya I wish it was a bit stronger. I noticed it right away but the amount of media you can put in there might make up for it
kool
👍
Nice review, Chris! 🙂👍That's rough to have 2 filters go out in one day 😟! I like the flow adjustment knob, and the cartidge area does look nice and roomy. The directional chamber on the intake is a really nice feature. With the motor being outside the tank, do you have to prime it?
I just had two more go. I am so frustrated.
I wish these were a bit stronger but were in my price range
Yes you have to prime
@@stubbsaquatics6080 geez that is uncannily bad luck, sorry to hear it
🇮🇪 very good review Chris
Thanks, John
Bardzo fajna kaskada :) Mam nadzieje, że będzie się dobrze sprawować. 👍👍👍
I hope so too my friend
1st😊🎉
I'm lucky number 19 mate. 🎉
You sound like you have my luck. Anyway great review Chris and I used the 300 before on a previous tank and worked great. Have a great week buddy 👊🍻
Good to know Sandor. Thanks, I really appreciate that. I had further problems and another three filters went down so I ended up buying five in total
@@stubbsaquatics6080 I think you'd be the right person to create a filter that works lol
Great review video Chris! 👍
Thanks buddy
Well done with the honest review. I think the quiet outweighs the slight lack of power in the flow.
I can always add something to the filter but as far as noise there's not much you can do about it. So I agree with you totally on the quiet
Pretty sweet dude but for a few bucks more we’d a spring for the 110 aqua clear baby!💪💪😀😀👍👍Hopefully they work out well for you though man…..sometimes when it’s a sudden thing you just gotta figure something out and that’s what you did….good luck with them sir!
I would have loved to get aquaclears but they were almost double and I had 3 more Marineland die on me so I ended up getting 5
Penn Plax is superior to Aquaclears.
Nice review Chris, looks like a nice filler 😁
It's a little weak to be honest, but there's lots of room that I could fill up with bio media
Thanks Chris. How are your 2 HOBs holding up after 9 months? Just got this after experimenting with a Seachem Tidal 55 and Aquaclear 20 on a 30 gallon tank with 6 small goldfish (2 black moors). Both were noisy for different reasons. The Tidal had a bad impeller and the Aquaclear had the noisy lid. Amazon had this on sale for $23 CAD+Tax. The equivalent Aquaclear was nearly $70+Tax. Super helpful thanks for the review. Don't know how they claim it will filter for 100 gallons but I would think this would be good for most in the 20-50 gallon range unless it's a big bioload. Love your pond too. I see you have the magnetic algae glass cleaner on that tank in the back. Any thoughts? I have thought they were gimmicky but would like your first-hand experience.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I couldn't agree with your comments more.
I do like these filters but no way would I trust them to do 100 gallons .. 50 at most but the price is right
I do like the other filters but don't like the price tags unless you find a great sale
I am very happy that you found it helpful.
Thanks again
@@stubbsaquatics6080 Glad you got 2 good ones. The one I got worked well for about an hour or two now it seems the impeller is damaged and rattles a lot. Will be returning for a second one. Hopefully, I'll have better luck. The price is the main draw. That you can buy 3 for the price of 1 Seachem or Aquaclear.
Looks like a reasonably decent filter considering the low price but like you I question the manufactures claim of a 300 GPH output. With the supplied media removed it certainly does provide a substantial amount of room to add your own filter media similar to the Aquaclear filters. It would be interesting to do a side by side comparison of this filter and a similarly sized Aquaclear to see if one outperforms the other. Big difference right off the mark though is the price point. The Penn Plax Cascade definitely comes out ahead there.
Thanks so much Ken! AquaClear would blow it away as in filtering ability as in gallons per hours. But I do like how much room there is on this filter to add more media. Whether it's mechanical or biological or both. I ended up getting a few more because other filters broke down. I was just a week from hell so I'm hoping it holds up and I'm hoping I can make out for the locking in power with more filtration
Penn Plax make solid filters. I prefer Aquaclear. They have been good to me. I have one that's been running for over 15 years straight. Super reliable machinery.
Thanks Snarky.
I have 3 Aquaclear. One is the 110. I love them but they just weren't in my budget to replace that many filters all at once. If I could have afforded it I would of either gone with the Aquaclear or the tidal
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it
Aquaclear is made by a foreign company, so I prefer Penn Plax.
@@MicklowFilms Aquaclear, Fluval, Marina, Laguna are all owned by Hagen.
Penn Flax although USA owned , is made in China like most things
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it very much.
Have a great weekend
Awesome video😊👍
Thanks so very much
Nice review Chris 👍👍🚀🚀
Thanks, Rocket boy
Súper 😃💪🏼
Thanks 👍
I have a love, hate relationship with HOB filters. On one hand they’re cheap and look cool on the other hand they’re very weak and small. In my last tank 2 years ago I bought 5 HOB filters before I gave in a bought a canister. The 5 HOB filters combined weren’t as good as my one canister and it was a lower end canister. Still HOB filters have their advantages.
I am the same way with cannisters .. I have only used them in my ponds but they would always leak and trying to get them back together was always a pain. I have to admit I would like to try one in my bigger tanks but em still afraid of flooding but I guess it can't go below the intake
Some filters are better than others
I wish these ones had a better flow rate but when the others broke down these were the only ones in my budget
I mean is it good for bettas tho Like the water flow ?
Hi there..
I would not use them for a betta tank.. bettas don't like a lot of water movement. There are smaller ones but sponge filters would probably be best
Opening a personal aquarium of small tanks in a week and I’m thinking these are the filters I’m gonna use. If anybody has recommendations for great (but still economic) filters please let me know! 😄
Sorry for the late response.
They are great little filters. I have 5. The reason I say little as they don't move as much water as they claim. Don't get me wrong. I do like them. Just know that one is not going to do a 100 gallons. More like two or three. I have had no problems with them
I'm a little bias I guess cause it's the only filter I've used, I have 2 they excellent and really quite
Thanks so very much for watching and commenting. I don't blame you for being biased. These filters are great value.
Better off getting mini canister zoo med has a good one. And only 45$
Thanks so much. I have never had much luck with canisters but that was with pond ones.. they always leaked.
I will have a look. Thanks for your suggestion
