Bought mine in April an put 7k miles on it. Not one dang problem. I did de cat it, change mirrors, better tires, led turn signals. I ride mine everyday to work. 6 days a week no matter the weather. I been thinking of road tripping it 9 hours away to my hometown
I once did a 14 hrs ride on a 701SM. Nothing to complain beside wind blast and wind noise on highway. But once you hit the dirt and backcountry roads it was so worth it
890!? I wanted a Duke 890R. I came close to buying one a few times but I never could bring myself to do it after researching the bike. From a forum on the 790/890: "KTMs are what they are: incredibly well-engineered bikes that work amazingly…when they work. Some work longer than others. Despite a few niggles like airbox sealing, air filter access (fixed on the new design), and fuel pumps, that 1090/1190/1290 platform is a solid bike. I’d have no issues putting my money down on one. The 790/890 on the other hand is a pile of garbage. The list of problems I’ve seen on these bikes is a mile long and growing by the day. - premature valve wear - premature cam wear - immobilizer failures - brake failures - rear shock failures - countershaft seal failures - coolant leaks - clutch lubrication issues - TFT display failures - Fuel tank venting issues - Fuel pump issues - Debris in fuel tanks - Single-cylinder startup problem that still has no cure - Cold-start issues - Airbox sealing issues - Numerous software problems (MTC failures, intermittent cruise control failures, ABS failures) If you’re one of those guys who reads this post and says “I’ve had a 790 for XXXXX-thousand kms and have never had an issue” then good for you, count yourself lucky. After working on dozens of KTM P-Twin bikes that have come through my shop and speaking to the owners of many more, I can name only one that didn’t have at least two of the problems on that list. It’s a great piece of design that was utterly ruined by corporate structuring…built to a price, not to a spec. It’s still riding the wave of being the best reviewed bike (reviews where editors ride carefully-prepped bikes for one or two days then give them back) in what it arguably the hottest segment in motorcycling right now. Mark my words gentlemen…once that hype fades away, a few years go by, and reality sets in, the first-gen KTM P-Twin WILL be remembered as one of the all-time biggest lemons in motorcycling."
Well the reliability of KTM isn't the best, still you might be worrying a little too much about it stalling. My experience with big 4 stroke single cylinder motors is every now and then they will just randomly stall. the pop is unburnt gas from the stall torching off in the exhaust. My DR 650 would do it once in a blue moon.
I've had my 690 for almost 10 years now. 30,000 + miles. No problems, uses a little oil and burns up tires... But CC if your scooter is better then i'll understand... :)
All sevicing for my KTMs is done by my local dealer and I`ve never had a single problem with them other than dropping them and breaking stuff, mainly levers which are grooved out to break at the very end of the lever. Currenly riding a 2024 Duke and it`s the bomb. I love kTm😁.
A fairing just fell off my bike while I was riding and it is lost somewhere. And that fairing is on backorder with no restock date. My KTM is falling apart. lol Getting a KTM part is tough.
Everyone should know euro bikes are extra hassle for extra reward. Make the choice to ride Japanese...and save yourself tons of frustration & expense. Or do like me and have both an Italian & a Japanese bike so you always have one ready to go.
If it’s under warranty don’t worry about it, just appreciate the bike. Gather your own experience, enjoy the machine and all of the money you have dumped into it.
Maybe… but my 1290 super adventure never had any issues. Bigger motor, longer pedigree, super dependable LC8. Never dabbled in the tiny motors though. Probably true that there’re a bunch of issues.
Ktm’s turn signals seem to flash forever as well. Lol Next month: new bike guys…ktm super duke for all that bottom end torque. 😅 Regardless, ride what you like 👍🏻
Naw, no more KTM's for me. I should have watched my old videos about KTM to remind me not get one. Now my new KTM is falling apart. lol: youtu.be/h0H-hBLYcc
@@CycleCruza Don't do it! All three people I know with various triumphs had nothing but issues, leaking coolant, electrical gremlins, multiple blown motors, etc. Stick with japanese my ninja h2 has given me no problems and I do is 1 oil change a year and tires every 2 years!
I have a suspicion that the reason KTM pulled out of Long Way Round was not because McGregor and Boorman might fail, but because of concern that their bikes might fail.
I've got a 2023 RC390 .They have been extremely reliable since 2017. After thousands of 390s raced the International RC CUP series, it's a dependable platform from the Bajjaj factory ,where only the smaller engines are produced. Wouldn't want a 690, 790 or 890 due to cam shaft issues.
@@hatchetjack1031 2023, some bolts broke bij normal streat use 1 exhoust bold and 1 from the subframe. And a bad oil seel. But al fixed under warrety. Here in holland ktm is very good with its clients
@@thecrow3461 KTM is also famous for winning races, superb handling and squeezing the most power from each cc of displacement. My W800 Kawasaki puts out the same horsepower as my RC390 KTM! (but it's very reliable)..nothing is free! Gee, my formula 1, 300mph, McClaren needs alot of maintenance and it's tires are $7500 each! I don't ride for transportation!
KTM motorcycles are primarily manufactured in Austria, where the company is headquartered. However, KTM also produces motorcycles in India through a partnership with Bajaj Auto, which owns a significant stake in KTM. Smaller-displacement models, typically 125cc to 390cc, are manufactured at the Bajaj plant in India, while larger models and more premium bikes are generally made in Austria.
@@Icem4n84 unfortunately some of our fellow KTM riders have ended up with lemons which can happen to any brand…but we’re happy with ours so that’s great…
That puff and shut down is the idle stepper motor delaying a bit to its preset position.Nothing else.High performance single piston engines with a light inertia tend to be a bit like that.Been fixing them for years, they are good bikes.
I have the 23 husky 701, just got used with 300 miles, too tall for the short rider. Anyway did a canada to mexico ride, half on dirt forest roads, 2800 total miles. No problems with my bike. There is not a single manufacture that makes as good a bike. I still have, 2001 520mxc, 2005 KTM 300 exc, KTM2012 450 EXC, KTM 2016 300XC, KTM 2023 500exc, KTM 790 adv, s model, and now my Husky 2023 701. They all work just fine. Change your oil and air filter and do inspection. Also important, do not fall down and hurt the bike.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It is good to hear you have had good luck with your Husky and KTM bikes. They should not have put electronic rider aides on the 690/701. .
@@EagleF3F I have yet to have any issues with a Japanese motorcycle that wasn't caused by me. I can't say the same thing for European bikes I've owned.
Cruza.... there is a very simple five minute cure to disable the traction control and ABS permanently. You can always undo the modification that disables it in less than five minutes. On your back wheel ABS sensor there is one bolt holding it in. Loosen that bolt, take it out and get one that is slightly longer and then stick a nut in between the sensor and the mounting point and install the new bolt. Bingo! Get on the bike, start it up and your automatically without ABS and traction control every single time. All you are doing is creating a space so the sensor can no longer get the reading. It doesn't even trip a dash light or anything. I finally did mine and it's been wonderful. I can put it back to bone stock in about three minutes.
I had a 701 for four years, only clutch slave cylinder had to be replaced under warranty, I sold it for almost the same money I bought it for. I have a Super Duke since 2021 not a single problem, but my new MT-10 didn't start after three months. It was fixed under warranty by Yamaha, though.
I enjoy how you can pull people's chains and how some react negatively. They don't even reallize how stupid they look whining about a person's opinions.... Keep the channel going... I usually enjoy all the content.
I have a 2020 SMC-R and it actually runs well. Minor oil loss behind the sprocket but changing the gasket fixed it. Just has a few issues with the switches and clutch sensor and blipper. On my Super Duke, the clutch fluid gets hot and then at some point the clutch no longer disengages properly. Bleeding the clutch and changing fluid fixes it for a week or two depending on how hot it gets outside. My girlfriend has a 790 Duke that pisses coolant out of the thermostat housing and the camshafts wear out. I have little desire to change the cams, but what else can you do? My buddy's S1000RR engine blew up so I can't complain. I've only been riding motorcycles for a few years and to be honest I think it's somewhat normal to have some issues. We still go out riding in the twisties every week. There's nothing better!
I've had 3 of these bikes. 2018, 2021, and now 2024. 0 problems. When you mod the shit out of the bike.your going against hundreds of thousands of dollars in engineering. The manufacturer made a awesome bike. Put a muffler and a dongle, and you're good to go. There's guys who spend 1000's on mods to get at most 3 h.p. on the dyno. It's totally not worth the $.
I've owned 3 KTMs so far and the only gripe I had is they all burned a little oil but as long as you keep it topped up no worries. Those are pretty high output little motors so I'm not surprised they use a bit of oil.
I have a KTM 390 Adventure and it's been pretty reliable. No issues other than random flameouts on the road. I have to make room in my garage so between the KTM and my DRZ400, the KTM's gotta go. Going to replace the KTM with a Triumph. I can totally see how trekking through the woods can get disorienting, even during the day. I'd freak out too, man. No judgement haha.
My 390 has given me so much trouble. My time and date resets everytime I crank the ignition. The bike does not start in-gear, always starts in cold start, randomly stalls even though the clutch is fully engaged and much more. This is my first and last KTM!
I own 2024 smcr 690 Arrow slip on wirh original header Pc6 with custom map DNA stage 2 filter Only lamba sensor wonky and cause check engine light but can be fixed with a fuel dongle. Other than that no issue so far. For the abs, we actually bypass them here. My local mechanic will rewire the brake hose directly to the calipers.. so we dont ride with abs here anyways...so your electronic issue its not a big issue bro.
@CycleCruza Unfortunately, most of the people who have the most problems are the ones who have the most mods. These dudes in the forums just will not admit it. Stock bikes have problems. But it is way more rare on stock bikes. Also keep in mind that people who leave message on forums are mostly people who have problems. Satisfied customers are rarely in the majority on a forum/group. Lastly, people complain about technology. But bikes now, with all of the electronics on them, are WAY better than the old skool bikes. Bikes made now get better gas mileage, have more performance, have traction control, better brakes/ABS, navigation, active suspensions, rider adjustable modes, etc.... Some times these things get in the way, but are great for safety for less experienced riders. Starting up my 2022 H-D Panamerica was like cranking up a jet....LOL I enjoyed my older simpler bikes. But they were not necessarily better. Keep the shiny side up Master Cruza!!!
I loved mine but I did have issues. Ghost drain on battery which sucked.. Also randomly I got "debris" someone in the brake system and lost my front brakes on a ride one day. Had to take to KTM to get fixed because I could not get them bled appropriately. Fun times, other than that it was a mean machine and I loved it! Oh except the seat... It sucked haha
I'll propably never even buy ONE unfortunately. With their issues I've just been too nervous to ever risk it. They look damn awesome today with their sci fi looks. But I only buy used and I don't want the headaches and no warranty left to deal with them.
Cant speak for their road bikes, but their motocross bikes are great, more expensive to maintain than my yamahas and kawasakis but not any less reliable
Pegging, the rev limiter is asking for problems. That means you're going to the red line multiple times quickly. I haul ass and do track days. I never hit the Rev Limiter. Youve passed peak power at redline..super.oto is the most fun on 2 wheels imo. .
Hi, lightest, most powerful versatile bike on the market. Keep it stock, 60 000 miles with nothing but oil, filters and brake pads ! And some rear tires and chain/sprockets, but a lot less front tires ! 😅 otherwise buy a comfy 450 lbs 70hp japanese anvil with a dirtbike look (and a LCD screen !)
I love my 2021 890 Duke R. It's got just over 6k miles. No problem yet. Hopefully, I won't have any problem in the future. Love the bike and my Tijuana girls.😂
Next year when cycle cruza sells the ktm, every video title will be about how he hates the maintenance schedule of a yz450 and how hes working on it more than riding it
The most unreliable bike I’ve ever had was a Honda XR200R. The exhaust kept falling off, the cush drive failed and the frame broke. You should therefore be very concerned about ever potentially owning a Honda in the future because of the reliability issues due to my experience and TH-cam comment.
Honda. No leaks. Even Triumphs don't leak anymore. KTM aint no BMW or Ducati, everybody knows that. Your KTM is perfect for offroad. ADV. Stuff like that. I'll take one any day! WE OUT HEEAH!
5:59 time for a real mans bike (no not a Harley either 🤣) ZERO electronic junk, RAW power! DRZ400sm Yes I know it's carburetorated but get it jetted correctly or get the Lectron carb for it (Auto jetting on the go so you don't have to do crap) @CycleCruza
Have to agree with some of the comments saying you are worrying too much. Between my previous 701 SM and now my current 1290 SAS, I've been on KTM for 4 years now, no issues. Their p-twin 790 and 890 engines on the other hand at this point are proven to be duds, so would avoid those. The 690 and 1290 engines though, safe picks. I think the euro reliability issues are overblown. You are just about as likely to get a dud euro bike as you are Japanese bike. Back in the day there may have been more of a disparity between the quality of products, but today? The stats show that while Japanese are more "reliable", the difference is only somewhere in the realm of 5% or something in that area. Wish I could find the article where I saw the numbers for many manufacturers and how many problems each of them had with their bikes. The Japanese brands were on top, but by only single digit margins over the euro bikes. Negligible in the grand scheme of things.
The KTM 790 & 890's are having major camshaft failures. There is an oil orifice that gets clogged maybe with metal shavings from production. They are failing in the Warranty Period and KTM or Pierer Mobility AG. KTM has lost over a Billion in the last year or so. KTM is downsizing in Europe and moving MFG to India ect..
I rode the 2024 Mt07 and Mt09 at a Yamaha demo event at a Motoamerica race and the 09 still has a throttle delay, like really noticeable, I was in sport mode if that makes any difference. I liked the 07 better. Just sayin that throttle delay is still there in 2024, maybe it was traction control kicking in or something but I didn’t like it. It also felt questionable in turns.
I am wondering who is paying for all these anti-KTM videos...BMW, maybe? More seriously, more than 10 KTMs owned, 3 of them LC4s never a fucking problem. But I am sure that this youtuber knows better.
So your not even gonna mention how KTM fixed @lifewellridden bike for FREE even tho it was out of warranty?? Come on CC don't just tell part of the story. If you are gonna tell it tell the whole story! He also said he will NEVER get rid of the bike
That's good to hear! I'm sure they didn't want bad press. I hope he has better luck with his bike this time. It sounds like the mechanic that initially serviced his bike did a poor job which caused his engine to fail, they better have fixed his bike for free. They act like they did something nice. lol He wouldn't have had the problem to begin with had they did their job properly.
How many poor customers have they screwed over with the 790/890 oil feed/camshaft issue and done nothing to help? Thousands. Helping one customer with a following because they don’t want the bad press is more of an insult to the thousands who they’ve screwed over.
KTM is probably the best bike on your channel and it's super reliable your paranoid of other people's problems and keep thinking all the worst like law attraction.
My YZ is better, night and day weight difference and more wild and automatic wheelies and feels like a mountain bike off-road. I HATE the electronics on the 690, if they removed the electronics crap it would be much better but my YZ is still better. I suggest you try a YZ450 sumo conversion to find out the truth...
ehh wring answer consumer reports European bikes including ktm are trolling the bottom. Japanese bikes are the best in the world from cruiser to sport...stop having a hint of racism in your choices. European bikes are like beautiful women exceptional outside rotten inside
@@CycleCruzayou keep doing the dumb comparison KTM to YZ KTM doesn't need high maintenance like YZ KTM comes already ready super moto YZ you have to turn into super moto your absolutely bias your review.
Honestly,I was looking forward to purchasing a 2024 KTM Duke 390,until I heard they were having some problems with the 790,an 890 model simply cause of the camshafts alot of them aren't getting killed out properly an quality control isn't that great over seas, even though I've only read on here that a guy just purchased one of the new 2024 duke 390 an just had barley 70 miles on it an then his engine seized up on it an called them while it was still under warranty to come an get it,so for that I'm pulling back on KTM Duke 390,so I've been looking at the 2023 Honda cb 500f an waiting on dealership to get the new 2024 Honda hornet for me to try be I buy or at least sit on them to see if I like them, also been looking at some nice bikes on market place too, until KTM puts better quality in their bikes an are made somewhere more reliable I won't buy any of them
i respect the opinion, but definitely disagree. you had one flameout on your bike which isnt a rare occurence and isnt really a concern either. Also if other youtubers had issues id like to know what mods were put on and by who before pointing straight at KTM. not really grounds for saying its not reliable but ultimatley its your feeling and if you dont trust it, get rid of it. id agree that your YZ is going to be more fun anyways because of the tuning and light weight. ive ran KTM for about 10 years and havnt had any issues that werent from normal wear and tear.
The most fun.....but NOT JAPANESE RELIABLE. PERIOD. EU, India, UK, China, Taiwan, Italy, Mexico and the USA got NOTHING on Japan when it comes to reliability. Whether an old model still being produced for the last 20+ years or a totally new design. That being said Honda is the current KING of the big Four, Yamahas can be the most FUN and Kawasaki offers the BEST VALUE, leaving Suzuki in 4th place.
Thats just all KTMs. High Compression, bored over 3x now. Lc4 was a 620 cc then 625cc. Then 640cc. Now 690cc. When u over engineer a bike for power and performance u have large scale mechanical failures. I had a 2023 exc350f barely 35 miles n blew whatever out my case (im a rider not a mechanic) at 9000 rpm.

Yeah sell your 690 and get a Chinese electric bike. We're tired of hearing about all the KTM problems you haven't had.
Well, ktm is owned by India/china in 51%of shares ... So owning ktm is owning indian/Chinese bike lol

But once you hit the dirt and backcountry roads it was so worth it
Got a 2020 KTM 690 Enduro R, dog the hell out of it and not a single prob...
I've had my 1290 for 4 years, one minor issue fixed in 2 minutes.
Hasn't missed a beat.
Nice! Good to hear! I just had a problem with my KTM and the KTM part is on back order with no restock date as per usual.
KTM is like a box of chocolates- you never know what you’re going to get.
Some have issues and others don’t
🤣 Great analogy.
- premature valve wear
- premature cam wear
- immobilizer failures
- brake failures
- rear shock failures
- countershaft seal failures
- coolant leaks
- clutch lubrication issues
- TFT display failures
- Fuel tank venting issues
- Fuel pump issues
- Debris in fuel tanks
- Single-cylinder startup problem that still has no cure
- Cold-start issues
- Airbox sealing issues
- Numerous software problems (MTC failures, intermittent cruise control failures, ABS failures)
If you’re one of those guys who reads this post and says “I’ve had a 790 for XXXXX-thousand kms and have never had an issue” then good for you, count yourself lucky.
Thanks for sharing! You are smart to do research. That saves you a lot of headache and irritation.
I wouldn't worry about the 690 engine, or the bigger V twins, but the 790 and 890 are having some issues with cams that i would avoid.
Yeah I'm getting a ton of comments about issues with the 790 and 890. From my understanding CFMoto makes KTM engines.
I've had my 690 for almost 10 years now. 30,000 + miles. No problems, uses a little oil and burns up tires... But CC if your scooter is better then i'll understand... :)
There's always 1, thanks mr ktm 😅

Smaller-displacement models, typically 125cc to 390cc, are manufactured at the Bajaj plant in India, while larger models and more premium bikes are generally made in Austria.

I bet the ones who haven't had any problems with their KTMs (or any bike, for that matter) are the ones who didn't modify them.
Everyone I know who rides any kind of motorcycle has issues, the only exception being those who never ride them.
@@EagleF3F I have yet to have any issues with a Japanese motorcycle that wasn't caused by me. I can't say the same thing for European bikes I've owned.
That’s a self-fulfilling prophecy right there what are you scared of your own shadow? Ride man ride.!! you never hear a good stories on the Internet
Cruza.... there is a very simple five minute cure to disable the traction control and ABS permanently.

None of my Japanese bikes ever burned a drop of oil.

I own 2024 smcr 690
Arrow slip on wirh original header
Pc6 with custom map
DNA stage 2 filter
Only lamba sensor wonky and cause check engine light but can be fixed with a fuel dongle. Other than that no issue so far.
For the abs, we actually bypass them here. My local mechanic will rewire the brake hose directly to the calipers.. so we dont ride with abs here anyways...so your electronic issue its not a big issue bro.
4k on my 2021 701 SM and no issues. I do suggest more frequent oil changes than the 2k recommendation. Mine was dark at 2k.

The most unreliable bike I’ve ever had was a Honda XR200R. The exhaust kept falling off, the cush drive failed and the frame broke. You should therefore be very concerned about ever potentially owning a Honda in the future because of the reliability issues due to my experience and TH-cam comment.

@CycleCruza
One machinist was demonstrating how the oil jets don’t line-up well with the supply line drilled in the head. Oil starvation.
The answer is Ktm duke 2 640 lc4 from 2006... ZERO electronics and its a carburator.
Tell me cyclecruza!

EU, India, UK, China, Taiwan, Italy, Mexico and the USA got NOTHING on Japan when it comes to reliability. Whether an old model still being produced for the last 20+ years or a totally new design. That being said Honda is the current KING of the big Four, Yamahas can be the most FUN and Kawasaki offers the BEST VALUE, leaving Suzuki in 4th place.
it was common with the 125 & 790 duke i owned from new,, Pull throttle.. .Pop Pop die, then just restarts
I'm just used to doing whatever I want with the Japanese bikes with zero issues.
Well at least you tried it but I know what you mean if you can’t trust the bike especially for minor things plus the expensive stuff
Put those other tires on, like your YZ. Baby.
Ktm = killer track machine. We all know their dirtbikes are killer machines, but do cost alot.
What do you think of the 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 650?
Isn't KTM imploding
