I usually have 4 data fields: HR, Lap Pace, Distance and Average Power.
The last is a really good indicator to have, better than HR. I discovered it when i got the Stryd footpod and find it really usefull, It considers also the incline and wind power, so really accurate indication of your effort, especially on uphills and or trails

Really great tips Ben, I'm always interested in what others want to see in the data on there watches, I guess thats my job also haha. I usually like to see my HR, average lap pace and the duration of the run. Time of day in Ultras is always a nice one.

FYI, You can totally do "sessions" (or workouts) with Polar as well. In fact, the Polar app is much more user-friendly to use as well. That's one of the two things (the other being proper sleep tracking) that I miss from Polar world since swithing to Garmin.

Something I've used when planning cycling routes is to use Google maps directions functionality to set a point to cycle to (the out loop). Then you can tweak that by dragging the line, to avoid main roads etc. Then you just gradually drag the finish point back to where you started (assuming you want an out & back loop) and again tweak the route by dragging the line around.
Once you have your route, you copy the whole webpage URL (it stores all the data points in it) and go to www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input. Paste the URL in to the "Provide a URL" box, select GPX as the output format and click convert. That creates a GPX file you can then upload to your device.
It sounds complicated but it isn't too bad once you get the hang of it. I like to use it because you can also use the Street View feature to check out the quality of the road or path or to see what a turn looks like so you don't miss it.

Around routes if you have Garmin and use those maps the navigation experience is richer than Srava, with Garmin you get turn in 15 meters where with Strava you have to look at your watch to remember to follow it, just something neat about using the Garmin experience instead of Strava 😀

I recently upgraded from 620 to 945 which was some step up. Set up a workout and I'm in my warmup and I got through a km and watch laps. I was like have I hit lap button to set off the workout. No. Had I set it up wrong. No. Didn't realise auto lap still worked as never worked in 620. A lap was just whatever the block was. I like the feature as looking back over a few kms tempo you can see where you gained or lost times in a km or mile. I like my data as I fined it interesting but 945 has a lot but consistently learning from it.
But I'm one for alerts on everything bar the walk/jog recovery between an interval. Just like not having to watch the watch. Get into desire zone and go. I do like the race set up which total avg time as I'll be doing a 10km tt soon and that feature will be handy.

May make it easier than flicking through lots of data screens

If you don't have one of the top end Garmin watches with route/map support i can highly recommend the app dwMap which enables gpx path routing also on lower tier Garmin watches. You plan the route online and then follow a red line on the watch during your run. (But without a map in the background!)

Sometimes I auto lap every KM when racing.. sometimes I manually lap it at the 5km markers on the course.. sometimes I auto lao evert KM. Depends on the course and how I'm feeling really! I don't personally record strides on my watch.

I noticed you don't use current pace which is interesting, maybe I'll try switch out current pace for lap pace, I can see how that could be useful
I use 3 mainly for running, but do experiment with random things as well
Run (general and race): Distance, Pace, Heart Rate, Timer... with lap button not enabled
Track: (speed sessions): Lap Distance, Pace, Heart Rate, Lap Time
Data Screen 2: Lap Distance, Pace, Lap Pace, Lap Time
Trail: Distance, Timer, Pace but it also adjusts itself when on hills to others.
My triathlon running fields are different again and using some elapsed screens for the whole event rather then the current activity only

I am not a fan of carrying things, on long runs i do wear a running belt with water and very long i have a hydration vest, but as rule, under 13 miles (which is most of my runs) i don't take anything and so taking a separate phone would be a chore?

Average heart rate ??? Why would you need that?

For easy runs the goal is slower miles to focus on building your aerobic system - endurance rather than speed. So keeping a track on your average heart rate allows you to make sure it stays in zone 2, so you don’t run too fast.

@@ZbenjZ that would work better with real time heart rate in my opinion.
